This album features Lionel Hampton’s first concert at the Newport Jazz Festival and overall is quite exciting. Hampton gathered together an all-star alumni band that, in addition to trombonist Al Grey, Frank Foster on tenor and a couple of appearances by pianist Milt Buckner, boasts the extraordinary trumpet section of Snooky Young, Jimmy Nottingham, Joe Newman and Wallace Davenport. The climax is provided on Hamp’s perennial “Flying Home” which finds Illinois Jacquet reprising and then extending his famous solo.

He is known as a bandleader, jazz percussionist and vibraphone virtuoso. Hampton is one of the most famous names in jazz history and has worked with prominent jazz musicians such as Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker and Quincy Jones.

The outstanding Audiophile album presented here showcases Hamptons breathtaking talents during the early days of Stereophonic recordings. The sextet session, Lionel, features Hampton alternating between vibes, piano and drums (he began his career as a drummer and recorded his first vibraphone solo during the 1930 Louis Armstrong version of “Memories of You”). His approach to the piano was highly particular, as he usually played it with only one or two fingers per hand as if he were performing on the vibes. His amazing technique on the instrument can be seen on many of his filmed performances.

Lionel Hampton was the first jazz vibraphonist and was one of the jazz giants beginning in the mid-’30s. He has achieved the difficult feat of being musically open-minded (even recording “Giant Steps”) without changing his basic swing style. Hamp started out as a drummer, playing with the Chicago Defender Newsboys’ Band as a youth. His original idol was Jimmy Bertrand, a ’20s drummer who occasionally played xylophone. Hampton played on the West Coast with such groups as Curtis Mosby’s Blue Blowers, Reb Spikes, and Paul Howard’s Quality Serenaders (with whom he made his recording debut in 1929) before joining Les Hite’s band, which for a period accompanied Louis Armstrong. At a recording session in 1930, a vibraphone happened to be in the studio, and Armstrong asked Hampton (who had practiced on one previously) if he could play a little bit behind him and on “Memories of You” and “Shine”; Hamp became the first jazz improviser to record on vibes.

One is Swiss – cellist Lionel Cottet, currently first soloist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra – the other is from Mexico: pianist Jorge Viladoms, although his musical education also brought him to Switzerland… Bridging the gap between their respective continents, both young musicians invite the listener to discover Latin American gems interacting freely with Parisian creations. Needless to say that these works (or composers) have not been subjected to or incorporated transatlantic influences, but merely represent a skilful juxtaposition of two major pieces on the one hand – Debussy’s Sonata “opposed” to Manuel Ponce’s, both contemporary masterpieces, respectively from 1915 and 1917 – and shorter works on the other, namely miniatures by Villa-Lobos, Ginastera and Piazzolla for Latin America, and Fauré, Massenet, Ravel and Saint-Saëns for Paris. While Debussy’s Sonata needs no introduction, it’s a different story for Ponce’s. Written in Havana, it was inspired by Cuban folklore for one of its movements, but resolutely turns to Spain for another, and… to Paris and Debussy in its last movement, with a slight humorous and baroque touch in the final fugue. An album with a highly unique blend indeed.

Those who, a few years ago, detected in Lionel Belmondo a coltranien pure stock are for their expenses. The man is passionate, loving music as one falls in religion. His credo is not Coltrane, nor Rollins, which one could understand for a jazz tenor saxophonist, but the music simply, all the music. In his latest album, Lionel Belmondo Plays European Standards recorded in Rollins’ trio in Vanguard (saxophone – double bass – drums) with Sylvain Romano on bass and Laurent Robin on drums, the saxophonist continues his work dedicated to classical musicians (Brahms, Fauré, Schubert, Bach, Wagner, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Schubert). With his orchestra, Hymne au soleil, and since 2003, Lionel regularly connects jazz and classical music. It is naturally in this vein that he has made his repertoire for this record where Lionel highlights his ability to improvise. Rather than the “tubes” – which may seem contradictory to the idea of standards, mostly from the successes of “musicals” Broadway – the trio travel with joy, inventiveness, in both genres.
