Callas had already triumphed at La Scala with Anna Bolena and Il pirata (the first real success of Bellini’s early career) in 1958. She wanted to record both works complete, but the producer Walter Legge was not convinced that either was marketable and persuaded the soprano to settle for their final scenes – which he believed to contain the essence of both pieces. Callas followed his judgement. ‘We are the only two people who know what bel canto is,’ she was to tell Legge years later when attempting to persuade him to share the platform at her Juilliard masterclasses. Posthumously she was to get her wish when EMI took into its catalogue a live broadcast of each opera from La Scala.

Trombonist and violinist of Copenhagen’s Selvhenter make noise in Russia’s Far North.
Maria Bertel and Maria Diekmann are founding members of the acclaimed Selvhenter band and Eget Værelse, a collective that unites various projects of its members ranging from free noise to electronic pop music.
In the middle of winter of 2017, two Marias visited Murmansk, Russia, a fjord city 2° north of the Arctic Circle, to play a rather short but very inspired set of solo and duo improvisations, and this is the document of that evening.

Following successful appearances at the Opéra-comique, in Paris, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Oper Frankfurt, Komische Oper Berlin, and Teatro alla Scala, in Milan, the Norwegian soprano Mari Eriksmoen joins the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Edward Gardner for a interesting album of orchestral songs, coupling Britten’s Les Illuminations and Four French Songs with a selection of Canteloube’s inimitable Chants d’Auvergne. Eriksmoen spent a year studying in Paris, and proves an effective and natural singer in the French language. As she mentions in her programme note: “It is highly demanding to sing in French when it is not one’s native tongue, but I have always felt at home when singing in French and nurture an emotional attachment to the French language”.

The ancient shamanistic musical traditions of the Sami of northern Scandinavia are given a modern twist by vocalist and drummer Mari Boine (Persen). Although her highly rhythmic songs are rooted in the wordless, yodeling-like vocal style of yoik (or joik), Boine’s arrangements incorporate influences of jazz, rock, and other ethnic elements. “See the Woman” it’s a debut in a two fold respect: Sami singer Mari Boine’s first album completely in English and her first album for the label MPS, recorded by producer Tobias Frøberg. A melancholic, spherical pop sound meets a sophisticated lyrical concept.

It was on 18 July 1668 that Moliere successfully performed George Dandin ou le mari confondu, a play mixed with a sung pastoral, for “Le Grand Divertissement Royal de Versailles” offered by Louis XIV to his Court, as a celebration of the Peace of Aachen. This amusing story of a rich peasant who purchases a young noble girl includes interludes set to the splendid music of Lully. The same year sees the promisaing meeting between Lully and Quinault: together they write for the King La Grotte de Versailles, in which Louis is glorified, and dances in person the role of a nymph. These two works, symbolic of the creative vigour of the early days of Versailles, and of the artistic appetite of a thirty-year-old Sovereign, are brought back to life thanks to Gaétan Jarry and the ensemble Marguerite Louise, with incomparable taste: tambourines, flutes and musettes are part of the festivities and the trumpets proclaim the glory of Louis. Here we have a scintillating echo of the sumptuous festivities given at Versailles by Louis XIV!

Op 1 maart 2017 is mijn nieuwe CD “Moving Friends “uitgekomen.
De CD bevat composities, waar de invloed van Argentijnse tangomuziek maar ook cross-overs met klassieke muziek/jazz en moderne muziek in te horen is.
Op deze CD staan 12 eigen composities .. daarnaast van Bach, Piazzola, Gardel, Troilo en Cobian .
In 2008 ontving ik de compositieprijs voor nieuwe Argentijnse tangomuziek. Dat maakte de weg vrij voor optredens in binnen -en buitenland . Vaak met Tangata ensemble& Jeannine Geerts, maar ook solo.
Zo speelden wij in Lissabon, Finland, Granada , Istanbul, Frankrijk, Duitsl , Toscane. Enkele jaren geleden tourde en speelde ik in Minnesota (solo en met de musici van Minneapolis ) en Jacqueline Edeling en ik reisden af naar Buenos Aires en traden ook daar op.
Naast de 6 solo pianostukken, bevat de CD ook composities met mijn geweldige collega musici :
Emmy Storms( viool), Andrea Bentivoglio (viool), Harriet Overbeek( cello), Boris Franz( contrabas), Jacqueline Edeling (Engelse concertina) en Kees Scholten (zang.)

Midwest Farmer’s Daughter isn’t merely an autobiographical title for the retro country singer/songwriter Margo Price, it’s a nice tip of the hat to one of her primary inspirations, Loretta Lynn. The connections between the two country singers don’t end there. Toward the end of her career, the Coal Miner’s Daughter wound up collaborating with Jack White for 2004’s Van Lear Rose, and White’s Third Man Records provides a launching pad for Price, releasing her self-financed solo debut as-is as Midwest Farmer’s Daughter. Spare and lean like Loretta in her prime, Price nevertheless writes with the studied precision of a modern Americana songwriter; even when she gets explicitly autobiographical, as she does on the opening “Hands of Time,” it doesn’t play as confession ripped from the soul, it plays as poetry. Similarly, when she tightens the screws so her song turns into something sleek, it doesn’t play as Music City precision, it feels savvy and personal, surprising with its light hint of funk and Price’s clear, plaintive, and powerful vocal. This tension between the head and heart, between the country and the city, is what fuels Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, placing it on a warm, hazy plane that feels simultaneously sophisticated and down-home. Part of this dichotomy is due to Price’s singing: she sounds like the Illinois girl that she is, possessing a voice that’s pretty, plain, and unadorned, carrying an innocence that cuts against the worldliness of her songs. Her band, though, provides her songs with a genuine honky tonk kick, but even when the album drifts toward the traditional — as it does on “Hurtin’ (On the Bottle)” or “Four Years of Chances” — Price’s sensibility is modern, turning these old-fashioned tales of heartbreak, love, loss, and perseverance into something fresh and affecting.

This was Margie Joseph’s third album for Atlantic. Like the first two, Arif Mardin was the producer, arranger and conductor, but it was to be the last time that Arif Mardin was Margie’s producer. The album yielded two minor hits, these being Words are impossible and Stay still. Covers of songs by Carole King (Believe in humanity, After all this time) and Bill Withers (The same love that made me laugh)sit comfortably among originals including two that Margie co-wrote with Arif (Sign of the times, Stay still). Margie Joseph was an excellent performer, but that big hit eluded her, so she never made the big time. Nevertheless, she made some excellent music of which this album is typical.
