Channeling spiritual/modal jazz and Latin rhythms, they simultaneously reference the greats such as Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, while maintaining a fresh perspective on ensemble dynamics.

Perhaps the group’s name is no coincidence – each instrument seems to be in orbit around the concept of symbiotic synergy – and everyone is given equal space to shine; from a psychedelic Korg, to a delirious saxophone or the gentle ripples of a harp. There’s a huge array of keyboards, skillfully manned by the likes of Guy Harrison and Cory Champion (Clear Path Ensemble), with a standout acoustic piano solo by Harrison on “Plume”.

Not to be outshone, the wind section delivers ecstatic saxophone riffs, fluttering flutes and solid horn choruses throughout. Meanwhile, providing vital foundational support are the percussion (Soundway alumnus Julien Dyne), vibraphone, acoustic bass and full choir arranged by Matt Hunter.

It’s a testament to their harmonious relationship and skill that this debut album instantly sounds like a classic from a group that might have been together a decade.

For most music lovers and musicians, the name André Caplet conjures up images of a great conductor with an international career, and an outstanding orchestrator who orchestrated several works by Claude Debussy. But when we talk about the composer André Caplet, many seem to be unaware of the rich catalogue of works he was able to write despite his premature death at the age of 46. Yet, as his masterpiece The Fantastic Tale shows, he was without doubt a brilliant composer with an art for storytelling and an exceptional knowledge of each instrument, which enabled him to skilfully set texts to music with total respect for prosody, to delicately combine different timbres, to create a wide palette of colours, and thus to depict a sound landscape that was at once warm, limpid and polished. From the deadpan humour of Trois fables to the pain of war transcended in Les Prières, his musical discourse is always of great sincerity whatever the subject, and it touches us like the voice of our parents, telling us stories while we were children. Let us hope that these pieces, some of which are still unpublished or little known, but recorded here, will give this storyteller-composer the true recognition he so richly deserves.

“I can hear in the music of both composers a similarity in their processes of giving physical form to their inspirations. The cruel resistance of the blank page feels, in both cases, inexistent, ignored. And therein lies an important, precious connection between Mozart and Schumann: an unobstructed directness to their music, in which the purity of intention remains intact.” – Piotr Anderszewski

“A commanding album with Anderszewski demonstrating quite remarkable pianism in four of the finest works written for the instrument…With playing of such elevated musicianship Anderszewski is in remarkable form providing a recital of a very special quality for Warner.” -Musicweb International, Recording of the Month

“All the performances show the lucidity and objectivity that have always been such outstanding qualities of Anderszewski’s playing…He brings the same qualities to a touching performance of Schumann’s last piano work, the so-called Ghost Variations.” -The Guardian

Alexandre Tharaud returns with an album of music by Haydn and Mozart composed between 1777 and 1786, including the latter’s masterpiece the Piano Concerto No.9 ‘Jeunehomme’ widely regarded as one of his greatest contributions to the genre. The piano works are elegantly woven together: while Tharaud performs Mozart’s cadenzas in the Piano Concerto No.9, the pianist has written his own for the Rondo in A – employing themes from ‘Jeunehomme’ – as well as for the Haydn concerto in which he uses motifs from Mozart’s famous Rondo ‘Alla Turca’ to give a truly Eastern European flavour to the work that seizes on the spirit of its final-movement Rondo all’Ungherese. The album sees Tharaud reunite with old friends: the award-winning French-Canadian chamber orchestra Les Violons du Roy under the baton of their music director Bernard Labadie, and the outstanding mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in Mozart’s concert aria ‘Ch’io mi scordi di te?’.

Inspired by the fact that Mozart had often composed for friends and fellow musicians to play with him in good company, ECHO Award winner Nils Mönkemeyer invited his own dear friends and top classical artists Sabine Meyer, Julia Fischer and William Youn to record some very special duos and trios by the composer.
The “Kegelstatt-Trio” is the perfect example for the motto of the album since Mozart wrote it while playing skittles with his friends. He later performed the trio, playing the viola. Besides that, Nils chose to explore the development of the famous composer, starting with pieces from “The London Sketchbook”, which Mozart wrote when he was 8 or 9 years old, or the Sonata in F major for violine and piano (but recorded in a version for viola and piano), written by an 11-year-old Mozart.

The selected pieces from “The London Sketchbook”, originally written for piano, were arranged and compiled by William Youn who is one of the leading Mozart interpreters of his generation.

The symphonies in G minor, K. 550 (no. 40), and C Major, K. 551 (no. 41, also known as ‘The Jupiter’) are the ones that most represent Mozart’s symphonic legacy to later generations of musicians. As early as 1800, the popular ‘Great’ G minor Symphony was praised as the ‘painting of a passion-stricken soul’. Like its big sister, the ‘Jupiter’ Symphony in C Major, it numbers among the most-played works in classical music and has been immortalized in countless recordings. Nevertheless, these symphonies – probably the most profound ones before Beethoven – reveal themselves as something quite new in every interpretation. ‘Mozart placed all the dark sides of human existence into his G minor Symphony’, says Herbert Blomstedt, adding that its ‘passion’ continues to fascinate him. The eminent Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt, a close associate and regular guest conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, conducted the G minor Symphony in concerts on January 31 and February 1, 2013 and the ‘Jupiter’ Symphony on December 21 and 22, 2017 in the Herkulessaal of Munich’s Residenz.

When he wrote his two unique quartets for piano, violin, alto and cello, in 1785 and 1786 respectively—the era of The Marriage of Figaro—Mozart was brilliantly inaugurating a genre which, much later, would inspire others, and not the least: Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Dvořák and Fauré, Saint-Saëns and Chausson. Not the big crowd then, because it is true that the format causes balance problems, that Mozart has overcome with his usual mastery (the others too, be reassured). Because the risk and the temptation are huge to make it some kind of mini-concerto for piano with three string accompaniments, and the composer took great pain to avoid that: yes, he often sets the piano against the three strings, but the exchange remains balanced and never are the strings only there to only act as support. In this, Mozart is the true precursor. On piano, Daniel Barenboim has surrounded himself with three musicians coming from his famous East-West Divan Orchestra: his son Michael B. on violin, the Russian violist Yulia Deyneka and Persian cellist Kian Soltani, great soloists whose value hasn’t awaited the passing of years to blossom in the light of day. Let’s note that these recordings have been made in a public concert in March 2017.

The Quartet’s debut recording features master Mozartian Gottlieb Wallisch in a stunning performance of his fellow Austrian’s own rarely-heard chamber orchestrations in ‘Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 12, 13 & 14’. In contrast to the orchestral version the ensemble strikingly enhances the intricacies of the string writing and encourages immediate interaction among the five musicians.

Wallisch and the Piatti Quartet performed this repertoire to packed audiences at various venues and festivals across the UK in the summer and autumn of 2011.

In 2012 the Piatti Quartet (Charlotte Scott 1st violin, Michael Trainor 2nd violin, David Wigram viola, Jessie Ann Richardson cello) were chosen for the UK-wide ‘Future Classics Classical Tour’ designed to promote the ‘stars of tomorrow’.

The Quartet has performed at both the Newbury Spring Festival and the Bath International Festivals plus major UK venues UK including the Purcell room, Conway Hall, St Georges (Bristol), The Queens Hall (Edinburgh) and has made numerous appearances live on BBC Radio 3.

Named a Steinway Artist in 2012, Gottlieb Wallisch is a competition prize-winner and a respected artist in the Viennese piano tradition.

Wallisch has performed with many leading orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and BBC National Orchestra of Wales and has appeared at leading festivals and in major concert halls including the Salzburg Festival, Lucerne Festival, Klavierfestival Ruhr, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Tonhalle Zurich, Musikhalle Hamburg and Singapore Arts Festival amongst others.

It all started at the end of a beautiful summer’s day in August 2010: the telephone rings, Lucas Macias Navarro, solo oboe of the Concertgebow Amsterdam, is on the line: “Hi Pat! Would you be interested in recording Mozart’s Oboe Concerto with the Mozart Orchestra, conducted by… Claudio Abbado?”
Knowing the musician to be a tease at times, I first thought it was a joke, but Lucas confirms: it is indeed a serious proposition!

Even though the Claves catalogue includes such brilliant names as Fischer-Dieskau, Teresa Berganza or the English Chamber Orchestra, it is true that a project such as this is quite something in a catalogue that prides itself with rare recordings, young interpreters, and also promotes and broadcasts the Swiss musical scene.
After all, it is rather as if, in 1980, the flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal had made a proposal to our founder, Marguerithe Dütschler, to record a Mozart concerto conducted by Herbert von Karajan…
Needless to say, the answer was yes, and thanks to donations from a very generous patron, the recording was planned in Spain, three years later.

Mozart achieved an exalted level of musical perfection with his Clarinet Concerto, conveying the most profound emotions and a stream of seamless musical poetics. It remains one of the most popular pieces in the classical repertoire. The Clarinet Quintet, meanwhile, sparkles with beauty – the liquid grace of the opening movement, the Larghetto’s timeless poise, the playful mannerisms of the Minuet and the exquisite theme and variations finale. The essential humanity of Mozart’s creative spirit is everywhere apparent in this recording, and his music remains a guiding beacon of sanity in an increasingly uncertain world. This repertoire is the perfect showcase for the virtuoso talents of Katherine Lacy, the acclaimed principal clarinettist of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra which accompanies her in the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, directed by Duncan Riddell (the Chamber Soloists of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra perform in the Clarinet Quintet).
