Music and mathematics were taught together in Europe’s universities for centuries before science and the arts drifted apart. Conductor Oliver Zeffman shows how the two subjects intersect in this live album, part of his Music x Museums series. Its program, performed in the well-stocked space of London’s Science Museum, explored the diverse ways in which composers play with the nature of musical time. It was brought to life by Ozero Ensemble’s 16 players, almost within touching distance of objects in the museum’s Stephen Hawking at Work exhibition.

The three great chamber works, the String Quartet, Piano Quintet, and Violin Sonata, were among the very last works that Elgar wrote, composed during an intensive and productive period in 1918 and 1919 whilst living at Brinkwells in Sussex, and under the twin shadows of the horrors of the Great War and the terminal illness of his wife, Alice. The String Quartet was dedicated to the original Brodsky Quartet (the name subsequently taken by the current group when they arrived as students at the Royal Northern College of Music) and was championed by this new Brodsky Quartet from the off, sitting alongside Delius’s Quartet on their debut recording (1984). It has remained a cornerstone of their repertoire ever since. The Brodsky Quartet took the opportunity of the centenary year of both works to perform the String Quartet alongside the Piano Quintet with their frequent co-performer Martin Roscoe, and this recording is a result of that commemoration.

Robert Schumann and Gabriel Fauré – both composers are great masters of the small form, the art of saying a lot with few notes. And both find their deepest and most touching statements in the intimate form of chamber music, which Schumann called “the higher potency of poetry” in his diary. All arrangements were worked out jointly by Martin Löhr and Marie-Pierre Langlamet.

Intuitively Martin Kohlstedt feels his way through this body of wood, felt hammers and steel strings. The young composer, who grew up in the forests of Thuringia, doesn’t just put on an anonymous fingerplay – he perpetually opens himself up with each and every moment, with every stroke of the keys. An attempt to create something close and personal – beyond sophisticated classics or artificial pathos. “Strom” is Martin Kohlstedt’s third studio album.

Martin Klett – Guastavino & Rachmaninoff (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Harmonies and virtuosity: that is what the two composers Sergei Rachmaninoff and Carlos Guastavino have in common. “Even though the geographical distance between them was immense, their approach to the piano was strikingly similar”, remarks Martin Klett. In both composers the Romantic element is paired with apparent attractive simplicity and ambitious piano artistry. Klett begins his album with a brief piece by the Argentinian composer Guastavino (1912-2000), one of the country’s most outstanding composers. In the course of his travels to Europe, the U.S.S.R., and China, he often presented his own piano works and songs in public – as well as his orchestral works, profoundly imbued with folklore. The listener will discover among others the Sonatina in three movements, where the composer associates folklore elements with the Romantic sonatina form. Klett continues with a selection of Guastavino’s Cantos Populares, Argentinian “Songs Without Words” so to speak. This cycle consists of ten brief aphorisms – often a short tango, a zamba, or a chacarera. The programme’s section dedicated to Guastavino closes with Las Niñas (The Girls, written 1953), where the link towards Rachmaninov seems rather obvious. A perfect transition to introduce Rachmaninoff’sSecond Sonata, which was composed in Rome in 1913 and helped consolidate his reputation as Russia’s last great Romantic. Once Rachmaninoff had performed the Second Sonatamany times in public, he decided to revise it thoroughly in 1931, and Klett plays this definite version. Klett, a former student of Elisabeth Leonskaja, Leon Fleisher and Pascal Devoyon, won the International Johannes Brahms Competition and the German National Music Competition, and has become a welcome guest at the prestigious music festivals of Lucerne, Schleswig-Holstein, Heidelberg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schwetzingen to name just a few.

The name Elisabeth Lutyens is synonymous with music that is overtly serial, uncompromisingly modernist, and of daring and fearless individuality. Yet there is much to explore behind the naturally combative and provocative facade of this extraordinary composer, whose music is at various times sensual, thoughtful and delicate, as well as dark, turbulent and even violent.

Pianist Martin James Bartlett is one of England’s notable rising stars, for he has combined competition success with a good deal of charisma, making him a prime concert attraction. In his image, and his playing, he has what might be called nerd-chic appeal; he was a natural addition to the roster of the somewhat image-oriented (and this is not a bad thing) Warner Classics label. The best news is with this, his debut album for the label, Bartlett delivers. He does not offer a conventional program, nor one that has the eccentric quality you might expect. Instead, he takes the age-old themes of love and death, and approaches them in unusual ways. Love and death overlap considerably in Bartlett’s conception, which includes not only an arrangement of the Liebestod from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, but also a pair of Bach arrangements that are, it’s true, common enough on debut recitals. This all gives an idea of the interest of the program. These pieces introduce you to Bartlett’s style, which is strikingly smooth, with a caressing quality that definitely sets him aside from the common run of young pianists. This is displayed to the hilt in the Liszt arrangement of Schumann’s Widmung; if you want romantic, here it is. The Busoni and Hess arrangements of Bach also set up a nice contrast with the pianistic fireworks to come, in Liszt’s Années de Pèlerinage, and especially in the Prokofiev Piano Sonata No. 7 in B flat major, Op. 83. You may wonder what this formidable work has to do with love and death, but of course the latter was part of the texture from which the sonata emerged, with World War II, and Soviet repression in full swing. Bartlett’s bitter reading appears to support the idea that Prokofiev’s sonata expressed the composer’s reaction to the murder, by Stalin’s secret service, of theater director Vsevolod Meyerhof and his wife, Zinaida Reich. This idea can be debated, but the fact it is present at all on a debut album promises great things.

“One must defend the Hungarian Rhapsodies on two fronts: First against musicians of the ‘serious’ brand who look down on them as showpieces, and secondly, against the piano maniacs who abuse them as showpieces”. By these words, great pianist Alfred Brendel characterizes the Hungarian Rhapsodies, S. 244 by Franz Liszt, which have now been recorded for Gramola by the young Bulgarian pianist Martin Ivanov. The thin line between overwhelming virtuosity on one hand and poetic finesse on the other seems to be tailor-made for Ivanov, who already showed great success with his recordings of Chopin, Schumann and lately with his recording of Liszt’s Sonata in B minor.

Following a first recording on Alpha devoted to Brahms which garnered much praise – ‘real duo playing’ said Gramophone, while Classica discerned ‘shared music making . . . a world full of nuances and subtlety, boundless sonic imagination (Marie-Elisabeth Hecker), playing of rare intelligence (Martin Helmchen)’ and awarded the disc a ‘Choc’ – the duo is reunited. Its new programme features two summits of chamber music: Schubert’s famous Arpeggione Sonata – named after a now obsolete instrument that was a cross between the guitar and the cello – and his no less celebrated Trio no.2 D929, which achieved even greater popularity thanks to Stanley Kubrick’s film Barry Lyndon. In the latter, the duo is joined by an eminent musician with whom they enjoy playing, Antje Weithaas, ‘one of the great violinists of our time’ (Fonoforum) and also one of the teachers most sought after by the young generation. For example, she taught Tobias Feldmann, the young violinist recently signed by Alpha.
