Both Mendelssohn’s and Bruch’s Violin concertos have in common that they were composed with great violinists in mind. With Mendelssohn it was the violin virtuoso Ferdinand David. There’s an interesting exchange of letters about the E Minor Violin Concerto and the friendship shared by Mendelssohn and David, which is a highly informative and compelling read. And the Bruch Concerto is unthinkable without Sarasate. Both works are based on a similar foundation. What the works have in common, however, is that they are two completely different masterpieces, each of which tells a completely different “story”. This combination creates many moments full of suspense.

And so it’s no surprise that Mike Singer had been carrying the title of his album in his mind for some time. Rather, “the album name was tangible for me because I always had a very special catchphrase in my head – in this case it was simply my emotions,” the musician recalls of the creation process of what is probably his most personal work.

Admittedly, Mike Campbell’s first album with the Dirty Knobs two years ago passed me by to some extent. Although the songs of Tom Petty would not have been scalded without Campbell’s pointed guitar playingthe same ones, of course, and also what he does on Don Henley’s “The Boys Of Summer”, for example, is terrific – but when accompanying musicians become bandleaders, it often doesn’t turn out too exciting. The songs on EXTERNAL COMBUSTION have not become innovative either, but, and this is the crucial thing, they are well done. In the lyrics: classic American motifs – sitting blind with love in the greyhound bus, demons in the There was a hole in the head and in the heart, big enough for a semi-trailer to pass through. Plus heartland rock, British Invasion, hints of heavy rock, a blues shuffle in between. “State Of Mind” is a pretty Americana ballad, with country singer Margo Price singing along and using soulful winds towards the end, in the lost-looking “In This Lifetime” the drums are just caressed, we hear a slide guitar. The songs have something, yes, touching about them – that’s what distinguishes Campbell from so many younger Americana epigones, who only pretend authenticity and depth.

Joseph Young Jr. (September 23, 1927 – March 24, 1999), known as Mighty Joe Young, was an American Chicago blues guitarist.

Young was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, moving to Milwaukee in about 1945. He was an amateur boxer in the 1940s, but he later recalled that “It was nothing to write home about… I decided that music was the best thing to do.” He began his music career in the early 1950s, singing on the Milwaukee nightclub circuit and taking his stage name after the film of the same name. In 1955, he returned to Louisiana to make his recording debut, for Jiffy Records.

He then moved to Chicago, where he worked as a sideman, notably with Joe Little & his Heart Breakers and later Billy Boy Arnold. After recording “Why Baby” / “Empty Arms” for Bobby Robinson’s Fire Records in 1961, he performed with Otis Rush in the early 1960s, playing on Rush’s album Cold Day in Hell. He also continued to record under his own name for small labels such as Webcor, Celtex, and Jacklyn. He played on Magic Sam’s albums West Side Soul and Black Magicand also worked with Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon, Tyrone Davis and Jimmy Dawkins.

Young’s album Blues with a Touch of Soul was released by Delmark Records in 1971, and two further albums followed on the Ovation label in the mid-1970s.

Young regularly performed in the 1970s and 1980s at the Wise Fools Pub in Chicago. His song “Turning Point” was used in the feature film Thief (1981), directed by Michael Mann.

In 1986 he began work on an album, eventually released in 1997 as Mighty Man. After he underwent surgery on a pinched nerve in his neck, he developed numbness in his fingers, which affected his ability to play guitar. In 1998, he underwent further surgery on his spine in an attempt to regain feeling in his fingers, but he died at the age of 71 after developing pneumonia.

One of those uniquely ’70s groups, Middle of the Road were a Scottish pop vocal group whose singles “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep,” “Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum,” and “Soley Soley” were huge European hits, selling in the tens of millions. Formed by Sally Carr (vocals), Ian McCredie (guitar), Eric McCredie (bass), and drummer Ken Andrew in 1970 (the group had been playing together since 1967, but under the moniker of “Part Three”) Middle of the Road had trouble finding success until they uprooted from the United Kingdom and settled in Italy. There they met famed producer Giacomo Tosti, who revamped the group, and molded them in the sound and image that would take them to pop heights. 1971 would see the release of their first single, the mega hit “Chirp Chirp Cheep Cheep,” as well as an album of the same name. The song would reach the upper echelons of charts all over the continent and propel the once unknown Scots into the pop consciousness almost overnight. More singles followed, as well as a handful of albums, but by 1976 the musical landscape had changed and Middle of the Road eventually called it a day. The band would make a return on the retro circuit performing well into the 21st century, albeit under the aegis of Middle of the Road featuring Sally Carr.

In 1968, Michel Legrand was already a renowned composer. Four years earlier, his composition for the “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” brought him fame, while the film left Cannes with a Golden Palm and even an Oscar nomination. This success therefore made him settle in Los Angeles where he rubs shoulders with Quincy Jones or Henry Mancini (“The pink Panther”, “Diamonds on Sofa”). But not everything is going according to plan and the requests are not crumbling as expected. It would be necessary to wait until 1968 and Norman Jewison’s new project, “The Thomas Crown Affair”. Celebrated a year ago for “In the heat of the Night”, the American director has in his hands a golden script and above all, the two most glamorous and bankable stars of the time: Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.

Decca Records France presents this wonderful high-resolution digital transfer of Michel Legrand’s 1958 album, Legrand Jazz. French musical composer, arranger, conductor, and jazz pianist Michel Legrand was a prolific composer, having written over 200 film and television scores, in addition to many songs. His scores for two of the films of French New Wave director Jacques Demy, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) and The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), earned Legrand his first Academy Award nominations. Legrand won his first Oscar for the song “The Windmills of Your Mind” from The Thomas Crown Affair (1968).
