After making several discs of chamber music by Brahms and Schubert, the cellist Marie-Elisabeth Hecker now records a large-scale concerto, showing the full range of her talent. Composed between 1918 and 1919, Elgar’s Concerto Op.85 was poorly received at its first performance but has since become established as one of the key works in the cello repertoire. To complete the programme, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker rejoins her chamber music partners, the violinists Carolin Widmann and David McCarroll, the violist Pauline Sachse and the pianist Martin Helmchen, in Elgar’s Piano Quintet, composed at the same time as the Concerto and premiered in London in 1919.

Since her high-profile victory at the 2005 Rostropovich Competition (she is the only winner ever to have taken both the First Prize and two special jury prizes), Marie-Elisabeth Hecker has belonged among the cellists who really count in the world. For her very first sonata recording, she is reunited with her partner both on the concert platform and in private life, the stylish pianist Martin Helmchen, in a programme of Brahms. The combination of the cellist whose playing was described by Die Zeit as ‘moving and instinctively beautiful’ and the pianist whom Diapason calls a ‘master of sound, tempo and articulation’ promises to be a moment of true chamber music, lyrical and brimming with complicity.

The first half of the seventeenth century marked the heyday of the air de cour at the French court. This was a monophonic lute-accompanied song that was generally on the subject of love. Sentimental songs of this kind soon found their way to other parts of Europe, including England, Germany and the Netherlands. With their exceptional programme, mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis and lutenist Luca Pianca breathe new life into this courtly musical culture in all of its elegance and beauty, performing works by Jean-Baptiste Lully, Étienne Moulinié, Michel Lambert, Gabriel Bataille and others.

Now unjustly forgotten, Gabriel Dupont left us two large-scale cycles of piano pieces and a sumptuous Quintet for strings and piano. This composer who died aged 36 in 1914 was the last representative of French Romanticism. His inspired, lyrical music sings of nature, the sea, the wind and the rain. Marie Catherine Girod is one of the leading specialists of a figure who is overdue for rediscovery.

For more than twenty years now, Marie Catherine Girod has been a passionate defender of neglected and forgotten repertoire for the piano. It is to her that we owe the world premiere recording of La Maison dans les dunes in 1997. This new disc, recorded in Prague, the city of the celebrated Pražák Quartet, on a Petrov piano whose velvety sonorities are ideally suited to the composer’s melancholy, ‘Proustian’ universe, demonstrates once again that Gabriel Dupont is a composer who is overdue for rediscovery.

This album presents the first world recording of “Journée de Printemps”, poem for violin and piano.

Was the golden age of the piano that of a defeat for female composers? If they occupied an important place in ancient and baroque music, the bourgeois society which emerges from the Enlightenment limits their access to the conservatory and to the quarry.

Both César Franck, Camille Saint-Saëns and Thierry Escaich represent emblematic personalities of a tradition of composers, united by the common characteristic of having counted among the greatest organists and improvisers of their time. This recording is designed to introduce a multiple portrait of their piano works, highlighting the strong imprint that this vocation marked on their pianistic creation. In this wake, the voice of J.-S. Bach will be represented here through F. Busoni, an eclectic personality, who devoted himself to the study of the specificities required for the piano transcription of the Cantor’s organ works. From end to end, this program transcends the aesthetics and weaves links between past and present, so much does this literature hold a particular universe.

The new album by Marie-Andrée Joerger entitled “Bach en Miroir” will be released on April 16th, 2021.

Marie-Andrée Joerger pays homage to a musical form, the Prelude and Fugue, so popular throughout the ages.

The mirror effect is created by alternating preludes and fugues by Johann-Sebastian Bach and other great composers, each of whom marked their own era: Balbastre, Mozart, Schumann, Reger and Escaich.

The particularly poetic and varied sounds of the accordion bring a unique dimension to these works, as if they had been written for this popular instrument.

“How did you design the program for this disk? The disk is made up most importantly of pieces that I particularly enjoyed performing in concert. But rather than making two recordings, one for Robert and the other dedicated to Clara, I imagined making both composers converse within the same universe. We are of course familiar with the hidden messages they constantly sent each other through their music and it seemed interesting to me to recreate an imaginary conversation between these two immense musicians. “

These Stabat maters represent a deep-rooted exploration of the solemnity of the sacred and the operatic aspect of musical writing, both in the sombre and plaintive tonality of F minor. Comparing these masterpieces, that of Antonio Vivaldi (1712) and that of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1736), allowing them to resonate in the acoustics of the Royal Chapel of the Château de Versailles, just as they could have been heard in the 18th century, inspires and awakens a desire for balance between internalised faith – spirituality, and externalised faith – splendour. Pergolesi’s work was very popular in France. Given on the occasion of the feast of the Virgin, the Stabat mater dolorosa is based on a 13th century liturgical text by Jacopone da Todi, reintroduced by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727.

Works by Marin Marais (1656-1728) « set for the harpsichord ». For her first solo disc, Marie van Rhijn brings together several of her passions : the French vocal repertoire of the « tragédie lyrique » and the music for the viola da gamba. This CD allows to enter in the colors of the music for King Louis XIV, sometimes orchestral and at other times intimate, at the keyboard of a rare harpsichord from 1679, with a deep sonority, never recorded nor edited before.

Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre has no reason to be ashamed to finally find herself alongside Chambonnières and Couperin in the discography devoted to the 17th century harpsichord. This is what the scholarly booklet of this new album tells us. Almost unknown today, yet she enjoyed a great reputation during her lifetime. And for good reason. Her inspired compositions exploit all the registers of the harpsichord, giving generosity and brightness to her works.
