In 1901, Edvard Grieg encountered many ‘Chopinesque’ elements in the latest work of the Zeeland-born (i.e., Dutch) composer and painter Gerard von Brucken Fock. The 24 preludes from opus 15 were played to him in Norway by Julius Röntgen, a respected (half) Dutch pianist and composer. From that moment onward, Grieg spoke – in jest, according to Von Brucken Fock – of ‘the Dutch Chopin’.

Cylene Suisse Redux documents François J. Bonnet and Stephen O’Malley’s Switzerland tour in December 2019, following the release of their first album, Cylene. The two musicians chose to entrust sound material recorded on the tour to the expert ears of two friends and great musicians Jim O’Rourke and Ryoji Ikeda, giving them carte blanche, and each in turn chose a distinct personal approach. For Ryoji Ikeda, it was a question of finding a moment, circumscribing a fragment of time through his listening, with minimal intervention. For Jim O’Rourke, on the other hand, the live recordings became material to be deconstructed and reassembled, to tell, according to his musical sensibility, a path of metamorphosis for Bonnet and O’Malley’s music. Cylene Suisse Redux is a prismatic substrate of a series of concerts surrounded by friendship, lakes, mountains, and by nightfall.

Eighteen years after first recording the Bach piano concertos, Francesco Tristano revisits three of these classics in partnership with Leo Margue as the conductor and the Bach Stage Ensemble, set up, especially for the project. Recorded for the label Scala Music, this new version has historically been documented but never set in stone. Three composers were also given the opportunity to write Cadenzas for these concertos. Francesco Tristano plays while standing with great spirit and energy! The pianist shakes up musical habits with this album. We have never heard these concertos with such an obsessive and forceful rhythm as the Concerto in A Major BWV 1055. The piano section radiates with its succession of arpeggios while the string ensemble punctuates the dialogue with incisive and rhythmic interventions.
