‘I am not superstitious… Nevertheless, when I started collecting repertoire for this album, which is dedicated to Schubert’s 220th anniversary, some works on the disc accidentally appeared to be connected. Schubert’s 5th symphony was recorded in Riga just about 200 years after it was composed. Franz was 20 years old when he wrote it. Leonid Desyatnikov’s ‘Wie der alte Leiermann’, for violin and orchestra, which I decided to arrange for the viola especially for this project, was composed 20 years ago for Schubert’s 200th anniversary. Spooky… On a more serious note, Schubert touches me deeply. Not only with his music and his sensitive soul, but also his life story is fascinating to me. Composer, elementary school teacher, poet, philosopher, pianist, singer, violinist, violist! With this album, I present myself as a commissioner of new music, arranger, solo performer and conductor. I would like to believe I am 0.22% closer to understanding Schubert’ Maxim Rysanov. Schubert s sunny 5th Symphony, 3rd Violin Sonata and ‘Polonaise’ for violin & orchestra, are joined by three contemporary composers who each draw on Schubert s music for their compositions. A darker, tormented Schubert from his final years is the source for their works ‘Winterreise’, ‘Erlknig’ and the late ‘Fantasy for violin & piano’ providing the inspiration. The haunting beauty of Schubert s music continues to exert a powerful influence on performers, composers and music lovers alike.

Like Stein’s fortepianos, the copy of a Walter and sons (a Viennese fortepiano once owned by Mozart) played here by Maxim Emelyanychev is equipped with a knee lever, the ancestor of the damper pedal. No doubt Mozart was inspired by the timbres, the dynamic and harmonic possibilities of this new instrument: the Fantasia in C minor that starts off this album highlights this orchestral − almost operatic − range, and in its profusion of themes, it express the most prominent contrasts, reaching great expressive density. The same accents can be found in Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor, K. 457, while the Piano Sonata No. 16 in C major, K. 545 offers a dramatic respite. This “small sonata for beginners” was composed in 1788, preceding the “Jupiter” Symphony, also in C major: a beautiful gem, coming just before his monumental work. Its innocent melody revives childhood memories of the first piano lessons. Finally, the Piano Sonata No. 18 in D major, K. 576 was created as the first part in a cycle: “Six easy piano sonatas for Princess Friederike”. Composed in 1789, and in fact considered to be of great difficulty, it was Mozart’s last sonata. Anton Walter, the piano maker, started making a name for himself in Vienna in 1778. Like most inventors, he never stopped experimenting: while other workshops produced pianos at scale, Walter kept looking for “his ideal”; each instrument differed from the previous one in numerous details and ever-bolder additions. In total, he built around seven hundred instruments; here, Emelyanychev plays on a copy made by Paul McNulty, a great specialist of fortepianos and ancient pianos, with experience in manufacturing close to two hundred copies of instruments from Stein, Walter, Hofman, Graf and Pleyel.

Max Richter has announced he will release Voices 2, the second album in the pioneering audio-visual Voices project, co-created with his artistic partner Yulia Mahr, on 9 April 2021. Voices was inspired by, and features text adapted from, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Voices 2 follows directly from the first part, embodying the Universal Declaration’s aspiration to build a better and fairer world.
The message at the core of Max Richter’s Voices 2 is one of hope. The music, and the video for the debut single ‘Mirrors’, invites us to take a breather from the rolling news agenda and to reflect instead on the aspirations in the Universal Declaration. Following the success of Recomposed by Max Richter, DG will release a Version 2 of the album. The new edition will come with new artwork and booklet incl. brand new remixes, shadows and the film that was shot in Berlin in December, that some of you experienced on site.
The album features 5 new tracks, so called ‘shadows which are electronic landscapes that were made for a live performance of the work with accompanying visual material made by the Danish game designers DarkMatters. He and Max developed these pieces to intercut with the written orchestral material, and to illuminate the abstract visual world of the images.
