Mayke Rademakers: “The e-cello is a relatively new instrument; it has not yet conquered its true place in the world of classical music. It presents an enormous spectrum of sound colors as well as the possibility of polyphony when played in conjunction with a loop and other effect pedals. It has inspired me significantly as a classical musician and I cannot now imagine undertaking my compositions and improvisations without it. Improvisation directly engages intuition and spontaneity which in turn enlarges perspective.

The latest release in harmonia mundi’s fascinating Latitudes series features Maya Youssef, a virtuoso of the qanun, a traditional Syrian zither. Youssef’s extraordinary musical gift and generosity of outlook, warmth, humor and optimism have brought comparisons with such legendary virtuosos as Ravi Shankar, Yehudi Menuhin and Meredith Monk. Syrian Dreams was written to express Youssef’s powerful feelings of loss and sadness over the tragedy and suffering occurring in her homeland.

Combining her extraordinary talent and dexterity, Maya Youssef has crafted a unique and innovative approach to playing the qanun, a traditional Syrian 78 stringed plucked zither famed for its penetrating and illustrious sound. To Maya, the act of playing music is a life and hope-affirming act; a space and musical solace where harm and pain is not only hindered, but reversed. Her latest album, produced by Jerry Boys, the Grammy-winning engineer of the Buena Vista Social Club series, and overseen by renowned record producer Joe Boyd, reveals an unparalleled work of musical ingenuity, agility and finesse, firmly placing her amongst some of the most skilled qanun players of her generation.

Presented with double bass and percussion, ‘Syrian Dreams’ is Maya Youssef’s personal journey through the 6 years of war in Syria, a translation of her memories of home and an expression of a deeply rooted connected to her music. Her journey with the qanun spans back to her youth in Damascus, where she was nationally recognised by the age of 12 and went on to graduate from the High Institute of Music and Dramatic Arts in Damascus. After having taught qanun at Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University, she was endorsed by the Arts Council England to move to London as part of their ‘Exceptional Talent Scheme’, where she now teaches, plays and researches. Currently undertaking a PhD at SOAS, she is examining the significance and adaptability of music as a healing tool, with a focus on Syrian refugee children at camps in Lebanon and Europe.

Debuting her highly anticipated first album, Maya will be supported by Basel Saleh of the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians, renowned Syrian oud player, conductor and choir leader whose stunning work has resonated far beyond his native Homs to be featured throughout prestigious festivals in the Middle East and Europe.

With their concerts celebrating the anniversaries of Piazzolla and Prokofiev in 2021 cancelled due to Covid, violinists Maya Levy and Hrachya Avenesyan decided to put their time in Lockdown to good use by recording a programme of works by both composers and turning their Brussels apartment into a recording studio. The result is this striking and dramatic album. The music of both composers contains emotions that many of us will have experienced over the past year. Fear, tension, despair, hope, joy – the emotional range explored by the works on this recording is wide ranging but overall, the mood is of hope triumphing. Prokofiev composed his sonatas under Soviet repression, and Piazzolla’s Tangos have the unmistakable bitter-sweet melancholy of the Argentinian soul underlying the sultry and sensual tango.

Born in New York City, 21 year old Maya Hawke is an actress, singer and lyricist. Hawke was most recently seen in the third season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” as well as in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Amanda Kramer’s “Ladyworld.” Following the release of her independently released A and B side singles in 2019, she returns with a deeply personal full-length album. Hawke, who wrote the lyrics, continued her collaboration with Grammy Award-winning songwriter Jesse Harris, who wrote the music for the album. On creating the album, Hawke says, “This album happened accidentally… Jesse and I started working together accidentally… we kept writing, kept collecting songs because it brought joy into both of our lives. Collecting them into an album and releasing it comes from a crazy, if not pathological desire to share that joy with others. From my point of view, ‘Blush’ is a collection of secret messages, hidden communications with the people in my life. ‘By Myself’ was a secret message to myself, that I hope I’ll receive someday soon.”

Taking a large musical work such as an opera, and arranging it into a piece of chamber music, can be quite a daunting task, as you may imagine. But it had been done before, especially in the late 19th century. Taking Sergei Prokofiev’s masterpiece, The Fiery Angel, and recomposing – no, re-imagining – it into a half-hour story that completely conveys the story with just two instruments, that’s a monumental task. A task which Maya Fridman took upon herself in 2015, as part of her Master’s Degree in cello performance (for which she received the highest honors, cum laude).

To be able to create this arrangement, she needed to work out a way to portray all these different roles of the story with just two instruments, cello and piano. The hysterical, erratic Renata, the knight Ruprecht, Madiël, the Fiery Angel himself, and even figures such as the Village Witch and the people at the convent in Trier, all are portrayed wonderfully by Maya’s arrangement for these two instruments. Her famously expressive playing style came in perfectly to suit the various timbres her arrangement requires.

“Author Lulu Wang selected poetry from the Tang and Song Dynasty which are considered the golden age of Chinese arts and culture. Each of the poems reflects the feeling of the trigrams and the related musical piece. By weaving the poetry into the music, the album becomes a tapestry of experiences and moods reflecting upon the eight trigrams. The music is dedicated to Maya Fridman, an alchemist who, through her deep musical understanding can turn any music into gold. Her sound on the cello speaks from soul to soul. Working with Maya and Lulu on this project has been a dreamlike experience for which I am ever grateful.” (Marion von Tilzer)

After a first exciting solo disc of Mozart’s Sonatas on the fortepiano, Maxim Emelyanychev now holds the baton in a symphonic program.

The young conductor was recently appointed head of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and a new wind of freedom is blowing in two major scores.

In Beethoven’s so often recorded Eroica Symphonie, he knows how to enhance the rich thematic palette and the variety of timbres. His insatiable curiosity galvanizes the Nizhny Novgorod Chamber Orchestra. His unlimited imagination combined to the use of natural horns and trumpets devilishly refresh the interpretation of this masterpiece.

This promising young musician – former conductor of the ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro and Currentzis’ favourite continuist – then visits Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn with as much greed and sensitivity. A most awaited release!

Having drawn attention with his original compositions, arrangements and covers, pianist Maxence Cyrin is back with Novö Piano II in which, with emotion and mischievousness, he takes a new look at the pop-rock repertoire of the ’80s and ’90s, from The Cure to Björk, by way of Soundgarden and Goldfrapp. Basically, what makes for the quality of a cover? The interpretation, transcription, arrangement? Not only. A cover is, of course, a way for a musician to embody the emotion felt when listening to a given artist, as well as a means for translating the attachment that links him to his past. The quality of Maxence Cyrin’s covers, whether focusing on pop or techno hits, stems from this form of distant and amorous relation he has with ‘certain rarities, certain favorite titles and not just hits’ that have punctuated his existence, such as Dominique A’s ‘Le courage des oiseaux’, The Cure’s ‘If Only Tonight We Could Sleep’, Björk’s ‘Hyperballad’ or trip-hop’s cult title Rob D’s ‘Clubbed to Death’.

‘In the 19th century, they were already making piano reductions of orchestral works, and today many pianists do the same thing, reproducing the rock repertoire note by note. Although I sometimes remain faithful to the vocal melody, my work goes further: it’s a matter of adapting the piece, making a real arrangement, appropriating it while respecting its original spirit. I take inspiration as much from Chopin and 19th-century Romanticism as from the modernism of the early 20th, without forgetting to draw on French chanson, jazz, pop or techno. For example, my arrangement of Soundgarden’s « Black Hole Sun » draws on Ravel and jazz, and Van Halen’s « Jump » is dominated by a rhythmic play in which the whole-tone scale recalls Satie or Debussy.’ Primarily instrumental, Novö Piano II is however marked by two moments of vocal grace, when the pianist is joined by Miss Kittin or Frantic. The former interprets Grace Jones’s ‘Walking in the Rain’ (1981) in ‘talk-over’ mode, and the latter, Billy Idol’s ‘Eyes Without a Face’ (1984) in an extremely sensual register.

Finally, Novö Piano II has a warm, natural sound, characteristic of recording engineer Nicolas Bartholomée’s work, but it is even more distinctive for ‘the colored, melodious sound, with its dazzling timbre and deep basses’ of the Fazioli piano on which it was recorded.

„Nocturnes“ is the 4th album of Maxence Cyrin. Having realized two albums where he reinterpreted pop, rock and electro anthems as a solo pianist (‘Modern Rhapsodies’, ‘Novö Piano’), then ‘The Fantasist’, an imaginary movie soundtrack, ‘Nocturnes’ is its first album of compositions for solo piano, putting back with current tastes a musical form adopted by several classic composers (Fauré, Field) and popularized by Chopin.

This album, made up by 10 pieces, invites us to a night journey in Paris (Arc de triomphe, Dream over the bridge, Paris spleen), the places where we have fun there (La Bellevilloise, China club), it makes us make a detour to go to lengthen in the boudoirs of a rococo hotel (Velours poussière).

The pianist also invites us in the musing and in the enchantment (The frozen palace), in the melancholy (A tale from the past, In the grey of the sky) and proposes us before putting to sleep us to remember ourselves this night spent in his company (It was a very good night).

Saxophonist Max von Mosch, who does exactly this with his first own ACT album, has only lived in Berlin for two years, and despite being just 33 years of age, he is already an old hand and figurehead of German jazz.

A saxophonist, vocalist, and producer from Philadelphia by way of Perkasie, PA, Max Swan channels influence from the likes of Stevie Wonder, James Blake, Donny Hathaway, Michael Brecker, and Lenny Pickett. He’s gone from nothing-but-jazz, to everything-other-than-jazz, and all stops in between. Initially being the loud alto player that showed up for the jam session every week, Max slowly took on more opportunities in hip hop production, as both a bandleader and producer, playing with a number of artists and groups in the Philly area. Over time, the saxophone he’d lay on tracks led to supplementing keyboards, and writing string and horn section arrangements. The work that was done with these artists led Max to start laying vocals on his newer music, starting with “So Much Chime”. Swan received accolades during the creation of his current sound with Councilman David Oh’s PHLlive Center Stage Music Conference, Ernest Stuart’s Center City Jazz Festival, and was named one of the “Best of 2017” on WXPN. Most recently, “The Waters” was featured on NPR’s Heavy Rotation, and is currently featured on 88.5 WXPN on the daily. Since his residency with The Kimmel Center last spring/summer, Max curated MONO//POLY, a music series showcasing artists’ music in non-traditionally arranged ways, unique to each set, all backed by Max and the band. “The Fisherman”, his debut album, released August 23rd.
