From their respective home studios separated by the Atlantic Ocean, Ben McElroy (U.K.) and A Spot on the Hill (U.S.) have created an enchanting album that blends folk, ambient, neoclassical minimalism and drone.

It started in December 2021 with a message from A Spot on the Hill’s Dan Cook to Ben McElroy proposing a collaboration. By the start of 2022, the two were trading recordings of drones, strings and piano. Ben would take a simple piano part from Dan and improvise multiple layers of cello, violin, viola and clarinet parts to accompany it, as well as adding mysterious drones and found sounds. Dan would sift through the accreted layers of sound, chiseling away at some so as to reveal the beauty of others. Then, back to Ben, who masterfully sculpted the evolving pieces into cohesive artistic statements.

Wide Open Light Is a family of songs I’ve written. I’ve selected them with the care one might put into a personal photo album. To that effect, I’d call it a sonic family photo album, each track a close relative to the next. The story behind this record is simple. I have been writing songs now for over 30 years. It’s what I long to do, love to do, and at times feel I need to do, and hope to continue doing until the ink runs dry and the notes fade. But for now, Wide Open Light. Deliberately minimalist, the songs themselves do as much of the heavy lifting as the production. (produced by myself, and my longtime collaborators Danny Kalb and Jason Mozersky). Wide Open Light is a beautifully raw album that features appearances from the likes of Jack Johnson, Shelby Lynne and Piers Faccini.

“More than anything, I wanted to make an album that was generous, that was useful,” says Ben Folds – “I want you to finish this record with something you didn’t have when you started” Indeed, Folds’ masterful new collection, What Matters Most, isn’t so much a statement as it is an offering, an open hand reaching out to all those wounded and bewildered by a world that seems to make less and less sense every day.

Brooklyn bedroom-pop trailblazers Beach Fossils’ new album Bunny, is a triumphant return for one of the 2010s most influential NYC bands. Bunny is a precise blend of the luscious dream-pop atmospheres they notoriously honed on their earliest projects, the post-punk vigor expressed on Clash the Truth, and the warm, sophisticated songwriting of Somersault. Composer Dustin Payseur peppers the album equally with descriptions of the joy of fatherhood and the existential pleasure of smoking cigarettes out of a car window with friends – Bunny features Beach Fossils’ most personal lyrics to-date. This is a collection of new favorite tracks for fans of every era of Beach Fossils. Releasing on Payseur and his partner Katie Garcia’s own label, Bayonet Records, Bunny proves to be the culmination of a decade’s worth of growth and experience.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:06:50 minutes | 1,16 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Chandos

John Wilson’s third volume devoted to music by Eric Coates combines some of the composer’s larger-scale works with miniatures and two marches. The Cinderella Phantasy frames the well-known fairy-tale from Cinderella’s perspective, glossing over the more brutal elements of the original, with some notably descriptive writing for the dream sequences, the ball, and of course the happy ending. The Three Men is to some extent autobiographical, as Coates explores his love of his native Nottinghamshire countryside, his love for London, and his love of the sea. The Three Elizabeths is a suite of portraits of three great figures in English History – Queen Elizabeth I, Elizabeth of Glamis (then the Queen Consort, now remembered as the Queen Mother), and Princess Elizabeth (who of course would become Queen Elizabeth II). Last Love is a wistful Romance written in 1939, while the much later Sweet Seventeen, a beautiful waltz, was inspired by the love of dancing harboured by both Eric and his wife, Phyllis. In fact, the title refers to his first date with ‘Phyl’, at the Blenheim Restaurant, the day before her seventeenth birthday. Two marches complete the programme: Television March was commissioned by the BBC (just three weeks before the date of broadcast!) for the resumption of television broadcasting in 1946, while The Dam Busters was used as the main title for Michael Anderson’s 1955 film and is arguably the composer’s most widely known work.

Intimaa’ (belonging in Arabic) is a documentation of pieces composed for Touch’s 40th anniversary celebrations in Los Angeles and Santa Cruz in the Spring of 2022. Pulling from ongoing research in weaving and textiles, the pieces are informed by the interchangeability of the weaver’s process with the sequencing of sound – from sourcing and preparing materials to be woven (recording, editing, and formatting samples), preparing the loom (programming the sequencer), and finally, weaving the cloth (playing back, manipulating, and recording the sequence).

Michel Petrucciani, although small in stature, was a giant in the jazz world. Stylistically, Petrucciani is most frequently compared to Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett for his lyricism and Oscar Peterson for his virtuosity. His playing was often quite dramatic; critics accuse him of over-indulgence and cheap showmanship, sometimes dismissing his music as being too accessible. The French born musician first recorded in 1980. This album is from early in his career (1982) and remains a musical insight into his early offerings before his career blossomed with multiple releases on Blue Note.

Michel Legrand is a French musical composer, arranger, conductor, and jazz pianist. He is best known for his often haunting, jazz-tinged film music. This is an unusual album for Michel Legrand – a suite of tracks based around 20th Century standards – starting with older evergreens, and moving into some very hip tunes from the 60s! The orchestrations are amazing – with tones, colors, and rhythmic approaches that surpass conventional expectations for many of the tunes – and which are handled in a mixture of lushness and loneliness that recalls Legrand’s strongest soundtrack work of the time.

Michel Camilo – Triangulo (2002) MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

The latest album from Santa Dominican pianist Michel Camilo is somewhat of a departure from his previous release, Spain, which was an exploration of the many facets of Latin jazz performed in partnership with flamenco guitarist Tomatito. While there are still Latin rhythms underlying the performances on this release (such rhythmic qualities are likely part of Camilo’s genetic system), other styles are explored in combination with Caribbean and Latin harmonies. Another change is that for the first time since his 1994 release, One More Once, Camilo has made his own compositions part of the play list, making up six of the ten-tune program. While his playing is fiery and passionate, it is toned down somewhat on some cuts, showing a gentle, melodic side that perhaps may have been under-played on earlier releases. Joined by Anthony Jackson on bass and Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez on drums and other percussive instruments, the music presented on this release is inspiring, but accessible. Fortunately, Camilo leaves complex music to others. His presentations are straightforward so that the listener is kept informed of where he is coming from at any point during any of the compositions. There are friendly cuts that a couple could get up and dance to, such as “Mr. C. I.” Another of his works, “Afterthought,” is a lovely ballad which Camilo tenderly and pensively executes, with just a touch of the brushes by Hernandez to augment this offering. For a generally relaxed “Con Alma,” Camilo shows off dazzling technique and improvisational imagination as he explores the ins and outs of Dizzy Gillespie’s jazz classic, demonstrating that his credentials extend beyond the Latin arena. Triangulo is an ambitious undertaking which has spawned a highly riveting and enjoyable experience for the listener. Recommended.

Dominican Jazz pianist Michel Camilo recorded “Rhapsody in Blue” with the 95-piece Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. You might expect his freewheeling, Latin-percussive style to bring a new heat and sparkle to the work. While Camilo, no stranger to classical music, provides an enjoyable ride through George Gershwin’s popular favorite, injecting some subtle swing touches, his treatment is otherwise pretty standard.

Recorded over four nights of a weeklong engagement at New York’s legendary Blue Note club, this double album is the first live recording by pianist Michel Camilo and includes a number of new compositions that had not been recorded (or even performed in public) before Camilo and his trio took over the Blue Note stage in March of 2003. This was his first recording with the rhythm section of bassist Charles Flores and drummer Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, but the trio sounds as if it has been playing together for a decade: Flores and Hernandez both follow Camilo faithfully and supportively, pushing him gently when he needs it and staying out of his way when he doesn’t. Camilo is at his most impressive on the ballads and mid-tempo numbers, on which his lines are delicate, almost lacy, but complex and powerful at the same time — note in particular the lovely “Twilight Glow” and the slightly more impressionistic “Dichotomy.” Few pianists could coax an elegant solo out of “Tequila,” but Camilo does so with apparent ease. On the more up-tempo numbers his soloing tends to be a bit blocky, but his take on the classic “Blue Bossa” features some amazing cross-rhythms in the piano solo, and his own “On the Other Hand” is a brilliant piece of modern jazz piano artistry that incorporated a sly tribute to Thelonious Monk. Some will feel that the album begins wearing a bit by the end of the second disc; others will wish there were a third. Recommended.

This crossover hit, the soundtrack to Jane Campion’s film, is subtle, pretty, and just a little bit bland. Nyman keeps the theatrics to a minimum, crafting an evocative work that manages to be both personal and universal. He also lets the music run its course, never pushing or cutting off a piece until it says what it needs to. A towering commercial achievement from a decidedly non-commercial artist.
