This latest release from bluesman Mike Zito is a mighty stellar tribute to the legendary ‘Father of Rock and Roll’ Chuck Berry. Being that both Zito and Berry are from St. Louis, Missouri, makes this a very personal project. Zito, backed by his band, bassist Terry Dry, drummer Matthew Johnson, and pianist/organist Lewis Stephens incorporates a smashing guest list on this twenty track album, which includes some of my favorites: Joanna Conner, Walter Trout, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Gales, Luther Dickenson, Sonny Landreth, Tinsley Ellis,Tommy Castro, Albert Castiglia, and Kid Anderson.

Mike Zito has walked many roads. At 44, his backstory is a travelogue that starts in Missouri and finds salvation in Texas, pinballs from solo career to supergroup (and back), dices with both death and glory. And yet, wherever his career leads him, Mike always returns to his founding values of honest, original songs, drawn from the emotional depths, twisting the great American genres into bold new shapes. “Keep Coming Back is all in the title,” explains the songwriter of his latest release on Ruf Records. “I love the blues, I love rock ‘n’ roll and I love country music. It’s what I do and who I am.”

Blues-rock is a tightrope and Mike Zito has never lost his footing. At times in his storied two-decade career, the Texas bandleader has rolled up the amps and rocked as hard as anyone. Yet his lifelong fascination with the blues has always reeled him back in. And now, having shaken the rafters with 2016s acclaimed Make Blues Not War, First Class Life finds Mike diving deep into the only genre that can do justice to his hard-won true stories of hardship and redemption. Make Blues was pretty extreme and rocking, he reflects. This time, I was definitely thinking more blues. Released in 2018 on Ruf Records, First Class Life is a fitting album title from a man who remembers the hard times. The title track is a nod to where Ive come from and where Im at, explains the songwriter whose promising early career was almost destroyed by addiction. Its a rags-to-riches story, and its certainly true. I grew up poor in St. Louis, and now I’m travelling the world to sing my songs. In the world of excess America, I may not look rich, but in my world, I most certainly am. I have a beautiful family, Im clean and sober, and I get to play music. And what music. Since Mikes debut album, Blue Room (1997), there have been countless creative peaks, from 2011s confessional Greyhound, through his world-conquering contributions to US supergroup the Royal Southern Brotherhood, right up to recent solo triumphs like Gone To Texas (2013), Keep Coming Back (2015) and Make Blues Not War (2016). Last November, as the band tracked live at Mikes new backyard recording facility dubbed Marz Studios there was an unspoken mission to raise the bar. We planned three days for the session, he reflects, but had all the tracks finished the first day. The band was really on fire and it just had this really fun vibe that we were in my backyard making a first class record. On his 14th album release, Mikes socially charged observations and candid soul-searching have never been sharper. Theres the punchy call-to-arms of Time For A Change and the exquisite one-note slow-blues, The World We Live In. The electrified blues bounce of Dying Day swears lifelong allegiance to his wife, while the sinister Old Black Graveyard growls with Hendrix-esque flourishes as it salutes the fallen. Thats about a forgotten cemetery of poor black Americans that has not been kept up near my home in Beaumont, Texas, he says. Blind Willie Johnson is buried there. Its a sure sign of racism in America and how the poor arent treated with dignity. That song is a ghost story that those buried there wreak havoc in the night. Yet the records darker moments are offset by cuts like Mama Don’t Like No Wah Wah, the crash-bang-wallop gem written with Bernard Allison. Bernard told me about his first gig as guitarist for Koko Taylor, laughs Mike. Koko didnt like any effects on the guitar, she wanted it to sound natural. She also didn’t know what effects were, she just called them wah wah. So when Bernard made an attempt to use an effect on his guitar after playing with her for months, he got caught. Mama don’t like no wah wah is what he was told. Thats a song to me! Of course, the most captivating story of all is the dazzling upward curve of Mike Zitos unfolding career. In 2018, First Class Life doesnt just capture the past glories and setbacks it points a signpost at the peaks to come. With this album, he concludes, I had this idea of stepping up. I want the world to know I can play this music with conviction and style. I think its really the next step…”

In 1998, Mike Zito collected the few dollars needed to record his first Blues album in the colours of the city of St Louis: Blue Room. It’s a genre that has lived through poverty, full of rage and electric energy, that seems almost blasphemous and that only fishermen seem to be able to play. Since then, it’s been success after success for the guitarist. Twice nominated for the Blues Music Award and with a dozen albums on his discography, Zito is proud of this first album that radically transformed his life. The re-release of Blue Room celebrates his success from 20 years ago. He enjoys listening to this record as it acts as a flashback to his time of innocence. Opening with a relatively funky number (Hollywood) which is followed by blues-rock riffs on Pull the Trigger, the man who has finally settled in Texas likes to lean on these fatty, rounded notes and powerful chords. His aim: give his listeners an electric shock! Here we find ten tracks including one previously unreleased song; it’s a cover of Elton John’s Rocket Man where electric reverbs bring a flawless eroticism rocked by the crooner’s unique voice. With a frenetic, rhythmic performance and intense groove, the bluesman doesn’t hold back. Blue Room is a landmark album, a childhood memory that relieves the artist of his harder years, reminding him that this first album is proof of his bluesman talent.  – Anna Coluthe

The Space Between is the second album from longtime friends and guitarists Stuart McCallum and Mike Walker, who express their mutual abiding love of melody and space, their friendship, respect and the multifarious sounds and timbres that their instrument has to offer. The Space Between finds Walker and McCallum developing extra gravitas than in the past, focussing on McCallum’s originals written especially for the duo. In addition they include two exquisitely chosen standards: Bacharach and David’s Alfie and My Ideal, also covered by Sonny Rollins, that sit perfectly in the set, balancing the flow.

GRAMMY Award-winning keyboardist/composer/producer Jeff Lorber recalls seeing guitarist Mike Stern during his much-ballyhooed tenure with Miles Davis in the early ‘80s. “I’ve been a fan of his for a long time,” said the keyboardist, who was touring hard in support of his hit records Wizard Island and It’s a Fact in those analog days. “Jeff Lorber Fusion and Miles Davis were playing some of the same festivals back then, so I got to hear him play.” For his part, Stern offered, “To be honest, I was aware of him, and had heard a bunch of good things, but I had never really checked him out. We were just in different orbits, me and Jeff.”

The 2017 passing of LINKIN PARK singer Chester Bennington had an understandably profound effect on the band’s cofounder, Mike Shinoda. Part mourning, part venting, his solo debut, Post Traumatic is a raw representation of loss and helplessness, recorded in the moment. “I can hear in the tone of my voice,” Shinoda told Beats 1 anchor Zane Lowe. “I knew where I was on that day.” The songs on the album reflect many moods—from tender (“Place to Start,” “Brooding”) to aggressive (“Lift Off,” “I.O.U.”)—all armed with Shinoda’s usual hybrid of hip-hop, electronic, and rock. There’s no censor here, especially on “Over Again,” when Shinoda tackles the stresses of Bennington’s tribute concert, even confronting well-wishers asking what he’s going to do next: “You think it’ll be a challenge?/Only my life’s work hanging in the f**king balance,” he shoots back.
