The matchless Takács Quartet return to Schubert. Their first disc on Hyperion—his ‘Death and the Maiden’ and ‘Rosamunde’ quartets—received unprecedently lavish critical acclaim, acknowledging a new modern benchmark for these works. Now they turn to perhaps the most hauntingly beautiful of all Schubert’s chamber works, the String Quintet—completed six weeks before the composer’s death. Schubert included a second cello in the texture, creating a sumptuously warm sound, a cradling intimacy. Here the Takács players are joined by cellist Ralph Kirshbaum. Also recorded here is the ‘Quartettsatz’: a fragment—of the highest quality—of a String Quartet in C minor abandoned by the composer. (more…)

Just like the other three Bruno Walter releases in Sony Classical’s current crop of SACD reissues, this classic Beethoven/Schubert coupling benefits from the DSD transfer, which reproduces as faithfully as possible the musical content of the original reel-to-reel master tapes. The reviewers have noted elsewhere, the cost is a small amount of tape hiss, eminently preferable to the so-called “no noise” digital editing which tampers with the musical signal as it tries to remove noise. Here is a transfer which presents the original intentions of the artists in the best possible light, capturing the acoustic signature of the recording venue (American Legion Hall in Hollywood) perfectly — warm, reverberent, yet transparent, ideally matching Bruno Walter’s interpretive idiom. Tango is one of the world’s most popular art forms. With its inherent sensuality and sexual overtones, it is no wonder that the tango has created intrigue throughout the world. The all-star musicians on this disc recreate traditional tangos, beautifully capturing the essence of the form with elegance and panache. Washington Galli, the vocalist, epitomizes the style of tango singing, adjusting to the constantly pulsating underlying rhythm while manifesting freedom of phrasing and interpretation. Despite the passage of time since these pieces were originally composed, the works remain fresh, as the tango remains a poignant expression of our deepest human emotions.

“The instrumental numbers, including the moving mid-tempo ‘Nostalgico’ and the jazzy, impressionistic ‘Nocturna,’ showcase the musical and emotional range of the tango as well as the superior musicianship of Raul Jaurena and company.” – Amazon (more…)

Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra – Prokofiev/Shostakovich… (1965) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

Kirill Kondrashin, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra / RSFSR Russian Chorus / Boys Choir of Moscow Choir School (2011)
Prokofiev: Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the Russian Revolution & Shostakovich: The Sun Shines over our Motherland

Transferred from a Angel/Meloydia 4-Track Tape | FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 43:27 minutes | 1,67 GB

Serge Prokofiev had been deeply engrossed in the writings of Vladimir Lenin when the All-Union Radio Committee approached him with the idea of a patriotic cantata, one that might incorporate “Revolutionary texts.” The germs of the idea began in 1934, but Prokofiev undertook the main body of the ten-movement work in 1936-1937. Prokofiev repressed the score, however, and it did not receive its premier until 5 May 1966 under Kondrashin. The sheer number of forces involved–which can easily involve up to 500 musicians–suggests another reason for the rarity of this colossus. The musical fecundity of Prokofiev’s style–with clear analogies to Alexandre Nevsky and to the G Minor Violin Concerto–mark the piece as an inspired rather than a merely propagandist vehicle. For the prologue or Introduction, Prokofiev utilizes the phrase “A specter is haunting Europe,” the first sentence from Marx and Engels’ Communist Manifesto. The 1966 recording by Kirill Kondrashin omits two movements–Stalin’s Oath and The Constitution–movements no longer “politically correct” during the period of anti-Stalin reaction, since the Soviet government wished to detach itself from his crimes.

Drawing on the inspiration of electronica, ambient, classical and dance music as they take their strange, beautiful, cinematic, future music to exciting new vistas where the inspiration of Burial, Mount Kimbie and Flying Lotus rubs shoulders with the textures of Arve Henriksen and Bon Iver and echoes of Steve Reich and Max Richter. Genre: Classical | Style: Romantic, Contemporary, Cello

A wonderful SACD… I recently heard the Dvorak live and I found myself comparing that performance to that on this disc.

The sound is excellent, with a very wide soundstage that may surprise those not used to hi fi playback. The sense of depth is also fine. The RCA transfer issued in the 1990’s was apparently mastered from a protection or safety dupe and suffered from a horrendous tape splice about seven minutes into the first movement; I used to cringe in anticipation of that evil edit and the change in timbre and lurch it caused in the soundfield. I’m glad to say that edit is not in evidence on this transfer. The sense of Piatigorsky being present is enhanced by the three-channel playback and this is the preferred listening mode if you have the proper equipment.

I had trepidation buying this disc based upon the above review. I almost didn’t, but I finally gave in. My benchmark is Jacqueline Du Pre’s unbelievably passionate performance amidst Sargent’s very supportive conducting. (more…)
