Ra to the Rescue is one of the rarer albums in the Sun Ra canon. There’s a reason, and it has nothing to do with quality content (or lack thereof). When Ra and his business partner Alton Abraham launched their pioneering independent Saturn label in Chicago in the late 1950s, and on thru the 1960s—by which time Ra had moved to New York—each new album was carefully curated, titled, packaged with a printed, illustrated sleeve, and promoted in ads and catalogs.

Omniverse, recorded in New York in 1979 and released that year on Sun Ra’s Saturn label, has been gathering dust for too long. It’s a fine, overlooked item in the vast Ra catalog. The tracks aren’t so much compositions as they are excursions, with only a few memorable themes or recurring motifs. It’s pure jazz, somewhat “inside” (for Sun Ra), with little of the aggressiveness and confrontation for which the bandleader was known. (Track 5, “Visitant of the Ninth Ultimate,” is an exception.) Omniverse is a very intimate album, offering lots of reflective piano in trio, quartet, and quintet settings, with spare horns. But instead of exhibiting a keyboard showcase, Sun Ra engages in dynamic interplay with the rhythm section. Moreover, the horns are featured largely as soloists; there are few ensemble passages.

This Sun Ra 1980 solo set has been kicking around the internet and in the digital libraries of Ra collectors for years. It has not previously been commercially released, nor has there been any (known) diligent attempt to upgrade the fidelity. We’ve taken action on both counts.

Celestial Love contains recordings made in September 1982 at New York’s Variety Studios, which had hosted countless Sun Ra sessions since the late 1960s. This was one of the last extended sessions at Variety, and these recordings were the last studio works released on Sun Ra’s own Saturn label (though the label did continue to press concert recordings, and new studio recordings did appear on other labels). Aside from their inclusion on Celestial Love, tracks from these sessions landed on the albums A Fireside Chat With Lucifer and Nuclear War. Since Nuclear War’s contents overlapped with both Fireside Chat and Celestial Love, we have reconstituted the latter two as complete albums, thus covering all titles from these Variety dates.

An F-bomb saturated hip-hop call & response club cut…from Sun Ra?! While the most renown track in this omniversal opus is the atomic expletive-filled repartee “Nuclear War,” there is so much more to this dark mysterious journey through the mind of Sun Ra. The sprawling, suite-like 20-minute title track sustains a lyrical edge in spite of an open framework and textures, which encourage sonorities to surface and emerge from the band as if there was no human intention behind them. In opposition to “Nuclear War”‘ Ra’s organ playing here was built less on bombast and sonic terror than it is on whispers, stutters, shivers, and swells. Fireside Chat offers a wide stylistic array, as was the artist’s intent, reflecting his eclectic, seemingly irreconcilable approach to compositional extremes. With Sun Ra you get everything… except predictability.

Soli I is the first of a series of four works by the Mexican composer Carlos Chávez, each called Soli and each featuring a succession of instrumental solos. Three of these compositions are chamber music, and the remaining one is a sort of concerto grosso for four soloists and orchestra. This first work of the series is a quartet for oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and trumpet.

This unboundedly fantastic interpretation is now also available in a surround version; here the lover of amazing musical experiences can follow a most original staging of this incredible event. The wind trio is assembled in a triangle (left, right, behind), the viola is opposite the listener – at twelve o’clock so to speak – whilst the violins one and two are slightly to the left front and back, cello and double bass similarly slightly to the right. In the centre of this cleverly designed directing we find a completely new approach to symphonic chamber music unrivaled in early Romantic music.

London (dpa) – In the early 1980s, British bands such as Duran Duran, The Human League or Depeche Mode caused a sensation with a new innovative sound. In the middle of it was the band ABC. In June 1982, the group from Sheffield released their debut album “The Lexicon Of Love”. “It was kind of pretty popular,” recalls singer Martin Fry in an interview with the German Press Agency in London. “I still don’t know why.»

Previously, ABC had attracted attention with the singles “Tears Are Not Enough”, “Poison Arrow” and “The Look Of Love” and reached the singles top-10. The album “The Lexicon Of Love” shot to the top of the British charts. “The response has been phenomenal,” Fry says. “At that time we probably hit the zeitgeist.»

The 65-year-old is a frontman, bandleader and the last remaining original member since the mid-90s. At that time, ABC was a quartet that included guitarist and keyboardist Mark White, saxophonist Stephen Singleton and drummer David Palmer. All four members are listed as songwriters on “The Lexicon Of Love”.

Few listeners know much, if anything, about Zygmunt Noskowski (1846–1909), even though Szymanowski featured among his distinguished students and Moniuszko among his renowned teachers. And yet, for most of the 19th century, Noskowski was the primary exponent of modern symphonic music in Poland. As a conductor and concert organiser, he himself championed the causes of forgotten Polish composers. Now it’s the turn of Antoni Wit, who succeeded Noskowski at the helm of the Warsaw Philharmonic 94 years after his retirement, to raise the profile of his late-romantic colleague, having similarly promoted the music of Zygmunt Stojowski on a previous Capriccio recording (C5464).

The award-winning Silesian quartet present a new album featuring two composers from Warsaw – Joachim Mendelson and Grażnya Bacewicz. After completing his music studies in Warsaw and Berlin, Joachim Mendelson moved to Paris in 1929, where he joined the Association des Jeunes Musiciens Polonais, a society founded in 1926 to facilitate the study, publication, and promotion of the works of young Polish composers. Bacewicz also received support from the Association, and from Paderewski, and studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. The associations’ aims included re-establishing a national musical life at the highest level back in Poland (after more than a century of joint occupation by Russia, Prussia, and Austria), and both composers returned to Warsaw and worked there until 1939. Mendelson taught at the Institute of Music, and Bacewicz became leader of the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and continued her career and a composer and soloist. Mendelson was imprisoned in the Warsaw ghetto until 1943 when he was murdered by the Gestapo. Five of his works survive, thanks to the French publisher Max Eschig, including the quartet and quintet recorded here. Both Bacewicz works on this recording were rejected by the composer, and never included in her catalogue of works. It is extremely lucky that the manuscripts have survived, preserved at the National Library in Warsaw. Half a century after her death the Royal String Quartet prepared performing scores and gave the first performances.
