Across six albums (over just as many years) Melbourne-via-Wagga sextet, the Ocean Party, have developed a unique sound of upbeat indie-pop that steers towards a frank and unsettling darker side. Seventh instalment, Beauty Point, further builds on this foundation as the often-disarmingly blunt, economical lyrics serve as stepping stones across a canvas of sprawling synths and a more stable underbelly of guitar-rock and punchy rhythmic urgency. The mostly-poignant one-liners leap to prominence sporadically, a similar random scatter followed by the occasional sax injection that pops up unannounced alongside more dramatic piano plods.

In the middle of the global pandemic, The Ocean are about to conclude their most engrossing endeavour to date. In 2018, they released Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic – the first half of a sprawling but superbly cohesive palaeontology concept album. In September 2020, The Ocean are poised to release the eagerly-awaited concluding parts of the Phanerozoic journey. Completing the album took longer than expected, because of the band’s heavy touring schedule since the release of Phanerozoic I: impressions of these adventures through India, Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe are documented in the 130-page Phanerozoic photo-book that will be released along with the vinyl edition of Part II. In contrast with the compositional directness of Phanerozoic I, the new album – Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic – is a vastly more progressive and perverse piece of work.

‘The 5 Countertenors’ draws together five of the world’s most renowned countertenors, who bring the rich world of baroque opera to life.
Described in their heyday as “beyond all creatures upon earth.” (William Congreve, 1700), countertenors are once again firmly established on concert platforms, opera stages, the covers of music magazines – and the subjects of heated on-line debate and of fan-pages on social media.
These world-class performers showcase the expressive variety of this unique genre. This album also celebrates the individuality of each singer’s voice and in turn the art of the countertenor. The countertenors are accompanied by the brilliant, ECHO-Klassik winning baroque group, Armonia Atenea, under George Petrou.

Presenting Thad Jones/Mel Lewis & The Jazz Orchestra is a 1966 big band jazz album recorded by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and released on the Solid State Records label. It is the debut release by the orchestra (although an earlier live session recording would eventually be released as Opening Night). All tracks are also included on Mosaic’s limited edition boxed set, The Complete Solid State Recordings of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.
The track titled “Three in One” is incorrectly labeled on the album cover. The correct title of the piece is “Three and One.” The piece was originally written by Jones for a 1958 small group session titled “Keepin’ Up With The Joneses” with Thad, his two siblings (Hank on piano and Elvin on drums), and bass player Eddie Jones (no relation). The title refers to the three Jones siblings plus one other Jones who is unrelated. The correct title is on the original parts as well as the later published version by Kendor.

Mélanie Bonis (1858–1937), a fine pianist herself, composed some 150 works for solo piano, publishing them with her first name shortened to ‘Mel’ to disguise the fact that she was a woman – while she lived among the French haute bourgeoisie as Mme Domange. They sometimes show the influence of Chabrier, and have points of contact with the music of Chausson, Debussy and Pierné, who had been fellow students at the Paris Conservatoire. But they also reveal an individual approach to rhythm, harmony and tone-colour – and it’s clear that her conventional exterior hid a lively sense of fun, her many miniatures for children perhaps influenced by her own experience as a mother.

Melinda Maxwell is a composer and oboist who creates “fascinatingly complex” music (Artsdesk) that blends improvisation and composition into a unique musical language. Her improvisations have been described by Ivan Hewett as having “the poise and sense of exact timing one expects from a composed piece”. In this new release Maxwell plays the aulos, or double pipe; probably the first known oboe in the world and the most popular wind instrument of the Ancient Greek and Roman civilisations.

Springsong introduces 10 original compositions: 7 piano solo, 3 with a string trio. Maxence’s pieces are often short (2-4 minutes) and evoke images (‘Ballerine’, ‘Candle’), moments of calm (‘Horizon’, ‘Silence’), nature, and the elements, which also play an important role in the program (‘Springsong’, ‘Daffodils’, ‘Orage’, ‘Le Bleu du Ciel’).
