Atlantic Records recording group Straight No Chaser has announced early details of their upcoming “One Shot Tour” with dates in the US and Europe. The European leg kicks off on September 12th at the House of Culture in Helsinki, Finland with dates through the month wrapping on September 25th at Vicar Street in Dublin, Ireland. The North American leg of the “One Shot Tour” will begin on October 26th at the Mystic Lake Showroom in Prior Lake, MN and continues through the holiday season, wrapping up on December 31st at McCaw Hall in Seattle, WA. Holiday Spirits is the debut studio album by the men’s a cappella singing group Straight No Chaser.
If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses… think again. Straight No Chaser are neither straight-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. Originally formed a dozen years ago while students together at Indiana University, the group has reassembled and reemerged after their video for ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ became a phenomenon with almost 8 million views on YouTube. In an era when so much pop music is the product of digital processing and vocal pro-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal – the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense… and with a sense of humor.

Mirare present a recording that is common to Philippe Hersant and Benoît Menut, two composers from different generations who have known each other well for twenty-five years – an idea that came to their minds with Benoît Menut’s desire to write for the Trio Karénine a concertante work with a similar length, format and instrumentation to that of Philippe Hersant, Chant de l’isolé. Thus was Depuis le Rivage created.
Each inspired in its own way by a poem, both works come to frame a musical journey that includes a work for a string orchestra, another for a piano trio, and give voice to each group of performers interfering on its own.

Gilles Peterson has partnered with Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick to reinvigorate the loose, protean energy of the early-80s Brit-funk scene. On “Aspects”, they revisit that important period and the spirit that guided it: self-taught, DIY vitality, and a raucous energy built on live performance. Bringing a fresh slant to a sound first developed by groups like Atmosfear, Hi-Tension, Light of the World and Freeez – with Maunick, it should be noted, also a member of the latter two bands – it’s the first material that Maunick and Peterson have released together in over a decade.

Storm Corrosion is the long-awaited collaborative project from Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson and Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt—but you might not guess it from listening to this debut album. Rather than playing the progressive metal associated with those bands, the duo crafts dark, cinematic orchestral music closer to the experimentation of Univers Zero or Scott Walker. Perhaps the strongest track is “Lock Howl,” an odd folk song that sounds dreamy and dreary.
