Wolfgang Rihm is one of the most important contemporary composers of our time. The musician, professor of composition and author from Karlsruhe, Germany is a larger-than-life personality, and the contemporary music scene is impossible to imagine without him. His knowledge of music is all-encompassing, as is his mastery of the arts, literature and philosophy – all of which serve as sources of inspiration for his composing. With more than 400 compositions, he has created a universe that cannot easily be defined. Rihm has written New Music – the titles of his compositions have come to symbolize the musical history of recent decades. Other works by him refer to music history – they include, for example, oratorios inspired by Bach, orchestral works based on Brahms, or chamber music inspired by Schumann.

There seem to be few subjects that do not interest my friend Tobias Lindstad. He is well-versed in literature, art, and philosophy, he throws himself into debates with an open mind and has kept his fascination for the mysteries of the universe. Above all, he displays a nearly all-encompassing appetite for good music in the most diverse genres. He never stops finding inspiration in classical and modern chamber music, in cool jazz and free-form improvisation, in avantgarde rock, in folk music, and in subtle pop melodies; really, he finds inspiration in all kinds of beautiful, strange, challenging and/or alluring music. However, his curious and open attitude as a listener does not lead to musical restlessness or lack of focus in his own compositional process, but rather to exploration and immersion. He holds on to his chosen musical ideas as if they were ships on a long sea voyage, always wondering where they will lead him next, and which new musical worlds he will discover along the way. And since patience is just as important a part of his personality as curiosity, Tobias Lindstad’s musical voyages of discovery usually continue for a very long time, nearly 30 years in some instances. This record is the culmination – so far – of this process of exploration.

All recordings by collegiate choirs these days seem to require a provenance, so Paul Brough shall pull together a few facts and figurations to explain what they are trying to do here. They have not tried to give us a lesson in history, liturgy, theology or musicology. They are not attempting to tell us exactly how this music and its accompanying liturgy was performed, though we can be sure that there was yards of antique lace and cloth of gold worn. They have not attempted a liturgical reconstruction – though, they present the music in liturgical order to help accentuate its variety – or a dogmatic representation of the sounds of the scores. They are bringing you the powerful truth of Easter, celebrated in sound by two enthusiastic and devoted groups, in a fusion of what we might have heard in late eighteenth-century Salzburg or Vienna in Austria, and what we are welcome to come and hear in early twenty-first-century Oxford in England. With its choir and chapel services Keble College aims to make itself accessible and approachable, it was founded in 1870 to enable undergraduates from more modest backgrounds to attend The University.

Two classic recordings by Karajan while he was in London as the imposed guest of Walter Legge, director of the Philharmonia Orchestra. The two symphonies form a lavish but unusual combination – Symphony no.2, the most popular of the seven created the composer of Valse Triste, and his curious Symphony no.4, a violent, arid, anti- Malherian dissertation infused with doubt and melancholy due to its baleful (augmented fourth) tritone interval, the hitherto spurned diabolus in musica. Two paradoxal masterworks.

Starting with an unusual verbal altercation between an Angel and Lucifer, Handel’s La Resurrezione is an extraordinary retelling of the three days between Christ’s death and resurrection which is unlike any other Passion or Oratorio. This journey centres around women, Mary Magdalene and Mary Cleophas, in a way that seems very modern, and which mirrors the ambiguities of their feelings in music that is completely original in concept and orchestration. The journey from grief, through hope, to love is wonderfully depicted. The message seems to be that grief is the price we pay for love; and that should be part of the narrative of our lives, not the defining moment.

The Crystal Method is coming with a new album on April 15 titled The Trip Out. There is a new single with Hyper & Iggy Pop titled “Post Punk,” which is out today. “Post Punk” joins “House Broken” featuring Naz Tokio” and “Act Right” featuring Billy Dean Thomas and VAAAL as singles from The Trip Out. The Crystal Method was formed in Las Vegas in the early nineties by co-founders Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan (now retired). They pushed the electronica and big beat worlds in the 90’s and continue to do so today. The Crystal Method released their previous album The Trip Home in 2018 and now it is time to head out.
