Margo Cilker’s sophomore album, Valley of Heart’s Delight, refers to a place she can’t return: California’s Santa Clara Valley, as it was known before the orchards were paved over and became more famous for Silicon than apricots. In this 11-song follow-up to 2021’s critically acclaimed Pohorylle, family and nature intertwine as guiding motifs, at once precious and endangered, beautiful and exhausting. Cilker and Pohorylle producer Sera Cahoone brought most of that record’s highly-acclaimed crew (studio players for The Decemberists, Band Of Horses, and Beirut) back to the studio with additional contributions from acclaimed Northwest traditionalist Caleb Klauder. Valley of Heart’s Delight, Cilker’s second record on Portland, Oregon label Fluff & Gravy Records, follows a year busily reaping the fruits of Pohorylle’s success, with festival appearances at Pickathon, Treefort, and End Of The Road, and tours supporting American Aquarium, Hayes Carll, Drive-By Truckers, and Joshua Ray Walker. Margo Cilker lives near the Columbia River in Goldendale, Washington with her husband, songwriter and working cowboy Forrest VanTuyl, as well as their dog and some horses.

London Symphony Orchestra & Sir Simon Rattle – Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 (2023) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © LSO Live

Conducting Bruckner, says Rattle, is a lifelong quest for some “extraordinary vista, some wonderful moment which leads you out of this world”. This certainly rings true for Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony, the opening theme for which is said to have come to him in a dream, played by an angel. This huge, glowing mountain-range of sound is all at once majestic, reverent and terrifying. This edition of the symphony by Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs was first performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle in September 2022, and the recording completes a set of three albums which also features Cohrs’ editions of Bruckner’s Fourth and Sixth symphonies. Making use of Bruckner’s discarded fragments and lesser-known material through his many revisions, this set of albums is a must-listen for lovers of Bruckner’s music, and gives us a glimpse into the composer’s untold musical thoughts.

Over the last 15 years, Jordi Savall has been exploring the links between Western and Eastern repertoires because he regards this work as a way to develop a better mutual understanding. On Oriente Lux, Hespèrion XXI plays alongside the ensemble Orpheus 21, created by him in the wake of the recent migrant crisis to welcome musicians from countries stricken by war, hunger or disasters to draw attention to the dignity shared of all humankind. The idea – prevailing during the Middle Ages – of a light coming from the East, Oriente Lux, is actualized on this recording with the fruitful encounter of repertoires from Syria, Bangladesh, Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Greece, Lebanon, Irak, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey.

The quartet around Berlin’s exceptional drummer Johannes Metzger now presents its second album. “How Far?” is a thoughtful, admonishing and stirring album about the state of the immediate environment, but at no point lecturing or patronizing.

The musicians express in no uncertain terms what is on their minds.
To make themselves understood, they work with moods that range from questioning to dystopian, and structures that are not infrequently appellative. In the idiom of contemporary jazz, the artists create pulsating grooves, spherical soundscapes and delicate sound paintings.

The Felice Brothers had a banner year in 2008, ditching their gig as New York City street performers in favor of a record contract, increased distribution, and international tour dates. Released just 13 months after the self-titled Felice Brothers – an album that served as the band’s de facto introduction to the world at large – Yonder Is the Clock offers another confident, rustic batch of northeastern Americana. Painted with earth tones and dotted with the same American archetypes that previously peppered Music from Big Pink, these songs draw easy parallels to the influences that spawned them, from Bob Dylan’s drawl to the Band’s rickety harmonies. Yonder Is the Clock certainly makes no attempt to disguise its roots, and while it often lacks the technical skill of Robbie Robertson or the poetic prowess of Dylan, the musicians do shoulder the weight of their predecessors. The Felice Brothers have always prized storytelling above instrumental chops, and Yonder Is the Clock (whose title borrows from Mark Twain’s The Mysterious Stranger) spins its sepia-toned narratives with conviction and authenticity, like a traveling band playing folk ballads by campfire. This is an album that references Depression-era plagues and cold New England winters with a hardened grin, an album in which turn-of-the-century ballplayers like Ty Cobb populate the nostalgic ballads. As with the previous record, Clock flirts with ramshackle country (particularly during the two fowl-related numbers, “Chicken Wire” and “Run Chicken Run”) but devotes more of its time to slow, melancholic twang, while producer Jeremy Backofen eschews excessive knob-twiddling for a casual, live-in-the-studio ambience. The best introduction to the Felice Brothers still rests in the band’s live show, where even the most leisurely songs brim with rich hootenanny appeal. Nevertheless, Yonder Is the Clock is the band’s most nuanced effort to date, an effortless piece of Catskills folk and narrative know-how that shows just how far a band can grow in one year’s time.

Neil Hannon has been making music under the name The Divine Comedy for 31 years now and can look back on a discography that includes 12 albums.

Charmed Life, a best Of collection consisting of 24 songs, from well-known hits to fan favorites, was lovingly compiled by Neil himself and then remastered at London’s Abbey Road Studios.

Among the 24 pieces there is also a new number, ‘The Best Mistake’.

On the limited 3CD edition, in addition to the 24 tracks, there is also other previously unreleased material to be heard, which Neil himself says is ‘a crazy mixed up bunch’. Some pieces are strangely season-dependent, others refer to what has been bothering us all lately, then again there are those who are just crazy.

Bleckell Murry Neet is an album of Cumbrian music played on the guitar and harp. Ed Heslam has a background in classical guitar playing, as a soloist and in various ensembles, while Jean Altshuler has built a career as an orchestral harpist and, more recently, playing the lever harp in chamber music. For this album, Jean has returned to the pedal harp, giving a more resonant sound which perfectly complements the rich tone of the Carrillo guitar, as well as allowing more scope in arranging the music.

Manuel Cardoso (1566–1650) was one of the most important composers of the golden age of Portuguese polyphony around the turn of the seventeenth century. But history has not been kind to him: the 1755 Lisbon earthquake that ruined the Convento do Carmo, where he spent most of his working life, also resulted in the loss of the only attested image of the composer and a good deal of his music – and much of that which survived has been neglected, his Masses included. This series will shed long-overdue light on these forgotten masterpieces, beginning with two ‘parody’ Masses, so called because they are based on existing music, in this instance two Palestrina motets.

In spite of the differences of time and distance, the choral works of the Australian composer Andrew Anderson (born in Melbourne in 1971) further the English cathedral tradition of such composers as Gerald Finzi and Herbert Howells, in music concerned particularly with lyricism and with clarity and directness of expression.

The history of rock has emblazoned so many iconic images into public memory. Much like the image of Jimi Hendrix burning his Stratocaster on stage, and the Beatles’ concert on the roof of Apple Corps HQ in London on January 30th, 1969, is essentially a cult classic. It was a momentous occasion, not only because the Fab Four were all together, but also because it was the last time John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr made a public appearance together. Filmed for Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s documentary Let It Be, which would be released the following year, this concert sees Billy Preston accompany the Beatle’s on the electric piano. Even if disagreements within the band were rife (Harrison had actually left the band just before this concert), this short performance—which was interrupted by the police 40 minutes in—is still an essential (final) chapter of their ten-year saga which was cut too short. There are various pirate copies of this concert on the roof, but the 2022 version is mixed in stereo by Giles Martin, son of the one-and-only George Martin, the producer of the Fab Four. There are three takes of Get Back, two of Don’t Let Me Down and I’ve Got A Feeling, and one of One After 909, Dig a Pony and God Save the Queen. The first take of I’ve Got a Feeling, One After 909 and Dig a Pony would end up on the 1970 album Let It Be. The release of this Rooftop Performance follows the Disney+ broadcast of The Beatles: Get Back, a documentary by Peter Jackson totalling a whopping 7 hours and 45 minutes of run-time. – Marc Zisman

„Here’s a delightful coupling: Mahler’s First Symphony and the song cycle that donated many of its themes to the larger work. Best of all, both performances are superb. Rafael Kubelik is the dark horse among Mahler conductors. His interpretations are always fresh, unforced, and seemingly without exaggeration. However, he knows how to build a climax, and his generally swift tempos never permit a minute’s boredom. There are many moments to cherish in his performance of the symphony, not least the delicious woodwind playing and the tangy trumpets in the third movement’s Fiddler on the Roof music. Reissued at midprice in excellently remastered sound–better than most new digitals in many respects–this is a performance that remains one of the best, and as a coupling it’s unbeatable.“ (David Hurwitz)
