We don’t often hear from Dutch duo Ralph van Reijendam and Robbert Kok aka Tangent, and so when a hint of their electroacoustic experiments crop up on the horizon – usually on the n5MD imprint – you can bet it’s going to be impactful. Evolutionary Cycles contains all the synth odyssey beats of a Tangerine Dream record, with an ambient dub sensibility for fully traversing the contemporary composition sphere. The clatter of glitched drum programming ekes out from the dense fog of electronics on the likes of ‘Empty Waves’ and ‘The Appearance of Forms’, making this release a must for anyone who’s into Pessimist.

Tanto Amor celebrates the repertoire of Brazilian singer / songwriter Ivan Lins, one of Brazil’s own musical and political heroes who turned 75 in 2020 and at the same time celebrated his 50th anniversary in the music industry. With the exception of “Song for Tim” (a co-composition with Roberto de Lujo) all songs on this recording are written by Ivan Lins himself. The arrangements for this project were made by musician, arranger and producer Roeland Jacobs.

Argentinean singer/songwriter Teresa Parodi got involved in music when studying singing and taking guitar lessons at the age of nine, soon after participating in different local festivals and having the opportunity to become a backup singer for Astor Piazzolla. Later, Teresa Parodi started her solo career, performing at small venues in Buenos Aires and recording her debut album called Teresa Parodi Desde Corrientes, followed by 1983’s Canto A Los Hombres Del Pan Duro, adding music to the work of prominent poets such as Jorge Luis Borges and Jorge Calvetti. In 1986, the artist had the chance to perform along with Pablo Milanés at Luna Park Stadium, two years later touring the U.S. and Europe for the first time. In 1995, Teresa Parodi was voted Best Composer of the Decade, receiving a Platinum Konex Award.

The accordion virtuoso Teodoro Anzellotti, a pioneering interpreter of contemporary music, meet one of the most extraordinary composers of the musical world of the 18th century, an era when the ‘Roi Soleil’ („Sun King’) resided in France and high-ranking men wore grey curly wigs. Anzellotti dedicated himself to harpsichord pieces that he selected personally, and he inspired some of today’s composers to deal with Rameau. And here the circle closes. Six contemporary accordion miniatures after Rameau were created in reflection with 21 works of Rameau’s baroque art. Teodoro Anzellotti: ‘There are always surprises … I never have seen such music before, not even written by Scarlatti, such turns, such surprises … does anyone believe that compositions like that were possible 300 years ago … that someone had the courage to risk music which was ahead of its time … to write down things that didn’t exist at that time, simply courageous … the forty years old Rameau was an avant-gardist in his time … he was a revolutionary!’

All five projects to come from Kanye West’s summer 2018 creative spurt have appeared to be equal collaborations between West and his G.O.O.D. Music colleagues, but that balance manifests itself most clearly on Harlem singer Teyana Taylor’s K.T.S.E.. The project—eight songs, one more than its four predecessors—owes as much to Taylor’s airy melodies as it does to Kanye’s studied production ear; the producer utilises vocal samples as choruses, as bookends to her verses and as the backbone of beats. For her part, Taylor is the embodiment of the formidable, around-the-way-girl persona fans have adored since her debut in the late aughts. Addressing a one-time elephant in the room on “A Rose In Harlem”, Taylor sings, “N*ggas like, ‘You aint hot, you ain’t pop/Yet, sup with you and Ye?’” And in K.T.S.E., they have their answer.

A return to their roots, with additional retro flourishes. On their first release for eight years, following singer Sharleen Spiteri’s detour into solo work, Texas have gone back to basics, reconnecting with the solidly crafted simplicity of their earliest albums, Southside and Mother’s Heaven. And beyond the sturdy pop-rock of Spiteri and bassist Johnny McElhone’s melodies, an outside player makes a sizable impression on proceedings. Seven of the 12 tracks were recorded at Richard Hawley’s studio in Sheffield, his evocatively retro fingerprints especially evident on the lovelorn ballad I Will Always and the girl-group swagger of If This Isn’t Real. Bernard Butler also lends a hand, but the signature sound still revolves around Spiteri’s luscious voice, at its most alluring on the Blondie-like Hearts Are Made To Stray.

Jump on Board is Texas’ first full-length collection of new material since 2013’s The Conversation — 2015’s Texas 25 was an anniversary celebration largely dedicated to re-recordings of old songs — and if Texas don’t push boundaries here, there is some appeal in how they settle into their groove. The biggest shift is how the group accentuates its smooth soul with a heavy dose of subdued disco. It’s not enough to refurbish Texas’ by now reliable blend of upscale pop and classic soul, but it does provide a glossy new coat of paint to a cozy, familiar environ, which is enough to make Jump on Board a bit of a reassuring listen: it doesn’t surprise but it doesn’t seem stuck, which gives the album a mellow appeal.
