The Manhattans embraced modern soul textures on their 1985 album, which has been expanded with single versions of “Don’t Say No” and Sam Cooke cover “You Send Me.”

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1985 release. „Too Hot to Stop It“ was the 14th studio album by legendary soul male vocal group The Manhattans. Early 1985, the next Manhattans record to place in the charts was Gerald Alston’s heartfelt rendition of Sam Cooke’s 1957 gold hit, “You Send Me”. Produced by Morrie Brown and peppered with Chris Cioe’s saxophone solo, the single pushed it’s way up to No #20 on the R&B Chart and #81 on the US Pop Chart. There was a tight dancer named “You’re Gonna Love Being Loved by Me”, produced and arranged by Skip Anderson and Steve Williams – Steve even plays a rock guitar solo in the middle and there’s one Luther Vandross on background vocals. Soon after “You Send Me”, Columbia Records released the next Manhattans album, “Too Hot to Stop It”, and it was quickly followed by the second single off the album, a sweet beat-ballad called “Don’t Say No”. on this track, Richard Scher synths are strongly pushing through, but more significantly there’s a new female vocalist by the name of B.J. Nelson sharing the lead.

Things changed considerably for the Manhattans in the early ’70s. George “Smitty” Smith left the group and later died tragically. Gerald Alston replaced him and the group signed with Columbia. The title track of this album was their first huge hit with Columbia, and quickly showed them how much clout a smash on a major-label meant. The single reached number three on the R&B charts, almost made the pop Top 40, and ensured that Alston’s smoother, but equally powerful and declarative voice wouldn’t have any problem fitting into their new sound. ~ Ron Wynn

Gerald Alston & the Manhattans — Winnie “Blue” Lovett, Ernest Bivins and Kenny Kelly — are mellow as Moet on this sophisticated soul showcase. Remakes of “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye” and “Tomorrow” sound like originals; they stamped their imprint on the two pop classics so definitively you forget about other versions. The eloquent “Am I Losing You” is an understated and heart-rending ballad. The chugger “Movin'” is the only uptempo number, while “Everybody Has a Dream is a motivational piece. Alston sings like a Baptist preacher on the Dr. Martin Luther King-inspired message song. Despite Blue’s depressing spoken intro, “Goodbye Is the Saddest Word” is not as depressing as the title or Blue’s opening suggests — it has a buoyant midtempo beat and a happy-go-lucky feel. ~ Andrew Hamilton

When ‘High Water I’ was released in August 2018 it was the sound of old friends coming together in a union of rock ‘n’ roll, psychedelic blues, rasping Americana and late-night storytelling. ‘High Water II’ picks up where the band’s studio debut left off, much of the album was written during those early recordings at Dark Horse Studios in Nashville, which is why the album feels like a perfect continuation of its predecessor.

Is there such a thing as being too prolific or having too much to say? Stephin Merritt, one of popular music’s true eccentrics, is also one of its most copious songwriters. Over the years, in side projects like The 6ths, The Gothic Archies and Future Bible Heroes, as well as his main band, The Magnetic Fields, Merritt has spun his own wonderfully ornate and populous creative universe, one that has often expressed itself in massive multi-song, multi-volume epics. While he may never again equal the massive chunk of creativity of the exceptional 69 Love Songs (1999), Merritt did give it an equally compelling run for its money with his last outing, 50 Song Memoir (2017).

Merritt began recording on his 50th birthday: February 9, 2015. Unlike his previous work, the lyrics on 50 Song Memoir are nonfiction—in Merritt’s words, “a mix of autobiography (bedbugs, Buddhism, buggery) and documentary (hippies, Hollywood, hyperacusis).” As he says in the album’s liner note interview with his friend, the author Daniel Handler, “I am the least autobiographical person you are likely to meet. I will probably not write any more true songs after this than I did before, but it’s been interesting working on it.” In addition to his vocals on all 50 songs, Merritt plays more than 100 instruments on 50 Song Memoir, ranging from ukulele to piano to drum machine to abacus. In concert, the music will be played and sung by a newly expanded Magnetic Fields septet in a stage set featuring 50 years of artifacts both musical (vintage computers, reel-to-reel tape decks, newly invented instruments), and decorative (tiki bar, shag carpet, vintage magazines for the perusal of idle musicians). The seven performers each play seven different instruments, either traditional (cello, charango, clavichord) or invented in the last 50 years (Slinky guitar, Swarmatron, synthesizer). The stage extravaganza will be directed by the award-winning Jose Zayas (Love in the Time of Cholera, Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter).
