After her Schumann disc (CC 72867), we are glad to present a new disc by great mezzosoprano Anna Lucia Richter. The theme of of the disc is: Light. The repertoire encompasses eight hundred years of German Lieder.

“[her] bright, clean, focused tone, precise diction and keen sense of drama will be familiar from her performances in an impressively wide-ranging portfolio.” – Gramophone on A.L.Richter:

With the present programme we want to explore the history of the German Lied throughout a period spanning some 800 years, from that first light of dawn represented by the earliest music scored with modern notation – courtly love songs by Walther von der Vogelweide (1170-1230) and Oswald von Wolkenstein (1377-1445) – down to such present-day emissaries of the Lied tradition as Aribert Reimann and Wolfgang Rihm. In between we find: J.S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Mendelssohn, F. Hensel, Wolf, Berg and Eisler.

The programme is rounded off, however, by the work of a political exile, Kurt Weill: namely, Berlin im Licht. This work appears initially to be no more than a love-song to the future of the electric light bulb: “Turn on the light; so you can see what’s wrong and what is right”. The deeper meaning was soon thrown into relief by the blotting out, within a few years of its composition, of both the light and the right to which Kurt Weill aspired and Germany’s swift descent into the darkness of dictatorship and war. A spark, however, still remained.

This album is a compilation of some of my favorite sacred choral works written over the past ten years. The themes are wide-ranging, but most of them focus on praise or peace. Several of them—including the three communion motets Soul, Adorn Yourself With Gladness, The Wonders of Thy Grace, and O Sacred Banquet—were commissioned by Brett Alan Judson, who expertly conducted all of the pieces on this disc. I’m especially grateful to the various groups and congregations who commissioned many of these works, helping me create meaningful music with special connections to the people who first performed them.

Let there be light! To open the new concert season, the Tonkunstler Orchestra and their Music Director Yutaka Sado are joined by the RIAS Chamber Choir and three excellent vocal soloists to tackle nothing less than «The Creation» itself. Premiered in 1798 in the Stadtpalais Schwarzenberg, which then stood on the Neue Markt square in Vienna, this German-language oratorio by Joseph Haydn takes the Book of Genesis as its subject matter. In the solo parts, archangels describe and comment on the six days of the Creation, with Adam and Eve also having their say. Meanwhile, the orchestra makes a painting in sound of the primordial chaos, the first sunrise and the appearance of creatures on earth.

The early nineteenth century was an era of great stylistic changes in music, as composers searched for new forms of expression and tonal possibilities, which spurred rapid innovation in the field of instrument design and manufacturing. A larger sound spectrum and greater variety of technical possibilities became a defined ideal. Ludwig van Beethoven and Friedrich Kuhlau were musical giants of their time, both seeking to exploit fully the potential brought by these new developments. Beethovens Serenade bends the boundaries of Classicism with impulsive dynamic changes and contrasting motifs, while Kuhlaus Grande Sonate Concertante eagerly explores a more Romantic aesthetic, containing an expressive freedom in its virtuosic writing and rich harmonic textures. The juxtaposition of Beethoven and Kuhlaus music on this recording is inspired by the two composers’ first and only encounter in Baden on the 2nd of September 1825. This charming moment in music history is remembered with a canon Beethoven wrote on the text ‘Kühl, nicht lau’ (cool, not lukewarm), a friendly pun on Kuhlau’s name.

Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich since October 2019, Paavo Järvi continues his complete cycle of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies, following a first volume devoted to Symphony no.5 and the symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini. This second volume features Symphonies nos. 2 and 4. The Fourth, composed in 1878 and nicknamed the ‘Fate’ Symphony because of its sombre colouring, which may recall the neuroses attributed to Tchaikovsky, is one of his most frequently performed. The Second Symphony, composed in 1872 and much less frequently performed in concert, is known as the ‘Little Russian’ because Tchaikovsky drew on Ukrainian folk tunes. The very first movement begins with a solo horn version of the folksong ‘Down by Mother Volga’…

His guitar works, mostly commissioned for Andrés Segovia, were an important element of his compositional output. Tomasz Zawierucha would like to express his sincere gratitude to Marianne Tansman, the composer’s daughter, for providing him with the master’s manuscripts. In these interpretations Zawierucha has always tried, within the limits of technical feasibility, to keep to the original version of the works without editorial changes.
