During the 1970s, and especially the 1980s, Manhattan Transfer topped the charts with its clever blend of jazz vocal light, doo-wop and cabaret. Following the passing of their leader, Tim Hauser, in 2014 due to a heart attack, very few observers gave them much of a chance. But The Junction is proof that the flame still shines bright, thanks in part to the arrival of Trist Curless (a rather surprising replacement for Hauser) and the intact virtuosity of Cheryl Bentyne, Janis Siegel and Alan Paul. Nine years after the surprising The Chick Corea Songbook, Manhattan Transfer offers a rather eclectic repertoire, mixing original compositions and well-chosen covers (US3/Herbie Hancock, Rickie Lee Jones, XTC). All in all, The Junction is as much a beautiful tribute to Tim Hauser as the signal of a new start.

The Norwegian opera literature is a well concealed and all too little known gem in our national cultural heri-tage. There is general agreement that it begins with the Waldemar Thrane/Henrik Bjerregaard Singspiel Fjeld-eventyret (The Mountain Story) from 1824. And through-out the nineteenth century there were a number of Norwe-gian composers who wrote operas, most of them now long forgotten.

Luigi Boccherini occupies a special place in cellists’ hearts: he must have been a phenomenal player, and, happily, he was also a composer. His exceptional knowledge of the technical possibilities of the cello helped him create a completely knew sound-palette. It is particularly evident in his chamber music, with its splendid vocalic lines, often revealing an undertone of melancholy, combined with impressive virtuosity, and with a wink or a smile appearing now and then from under the surface. The settings are very varied: not only calling for two celli, but also for two violas, and for a wide variety of solo instruments with string quartet: violin, oboe and guitar.

When the sun hovers near the horizon, the rays of white sunlight are scattered out of the beam by small particles and molecules in the atmosphere that sprinkle the sky with brilliant hues indicating that the day starts to fade. As night begins to fall, tree-tops redden and begin to glow. Darkness closes in and falls like a blanket covering the sky. It is late again and all is in shadow below. It is when stars align and dreams come true. Sven Wunder thrives at nightfall and welcomes the horizon of beginnings on ”Late Again”, a collection of nocturnal jazz pieces that depict shooting stars and scattered beams from the setting sun, with an emphasis on gentle compositions for piano and orchestral pop-jazz arrangements for flute, brass, and strings.

The Rolling Stones have released the second single of their new album “Hackney Diamonds”, which will be released in October, today (28.09.). It is called “Sounds of Heaven” and shows that the band has actually set on a diverse sound for the new long player. The Stones are supported on this track by Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder.

The two stars have agreed to get involved in the new track. For example, Lady Gaga can be heard alongside Mick Jagger, while Wonder provides instrumental support. After the up-tempo song “Angry”, “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” is a more soulful number, which – also thanks to Lady Gaga’s vocal power – builds up to a pompous number with a big band character.

This expanded Let It Bleed edition of the Replacements’ fourth studio album Tim—the final with their full, original lineup—is a marvelous, absolutely necessary corrective to the muddled-sounding original release from 1985. Tim found the band at their creative peak, with some of the best songs Paul Westerberg, Chris Mars, and brothers Tommy and Bob Stinson would ever write, fresh under their belts. Here we get to enjoy not only the demos and an entire live show that are staples of the expanded reissue game, but we get to hear a version of the original album that’s worthy of the material, thanks to veteran producer and engineer Ed Stasium.

The New Society – The Barock Sound of the New Society (1966/2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

The New Society take baroque pop to a whole new level. The cover photo of them dressed ridiculously in Renaissance clothing is not a joke. They seriously wanted to merge baroque culture with rock culture…Which they call “barock”. I can’t even count how many times they say stuff like “methinks, thou, willist, shalt” in their lyrics. Sometimes it sounds genuine, but it usually sounds like one big bubblegummy act.

The music really isn’t that bad. Its typical baroque pop/rock with lots of electric guitar and harpsichord. Plenty of folk is on hand as well. If I was to compare them to anyone, I’d say they’re like all those west coast sunshine and folk bands like: The Mamas & The Papas, Jefferson Airplane, New Christy Minstrals, etc.

You can tell this was a failed experiment. But hey, they’re good for a laugh and the music’s alright.

‘Metallic Spheres’ by The Orb and David Gilmour, the guitar and voice of Pink Floyd, has been reimagined and remixed as ‘Metallic Spheres in Colour’. Of this rework, producer Youth says ‘The idea for ‘Metallic Spheres in Colour’, was that Alex Paterson (founder of The Orb) could have done more on the first version, and he didn’t really have the opportunity because we had a philosophy of making the music like the ‘Blade Runner’ soundtrack meets ‘Wish You Were Here’. So, I asked him why don’t we remix it and make it like an Orb classic? And in doing that, it’s almost like a completely different album’.

The rich 70s legacy of the Lovelites – a Chicago trio who first sprang onto the soul with some wonderfully fragile work when they were young, and who continued to record some really great music – even though they never fully got their due at the time! The music here was all done after the girls got their one shot at an LP on the Uni label – and the set features rare work for a variety of different labels, all issued only as 7″ singles – plus a few tracks that were never released at the time. All the strength of their early vocals is still in place here, but guided by a sense of maturity that makes the music even more powerful – and which seems to indicate that the trio have already lived a lot of life in the time since their first records – all of which they bring to play in the music. Most tracks have a groovy vibe – midtempo and mellow, but with a gentle groove too – one that brings out the best in lead singer Patti Hamilton, in a set of 16 tracks that includes “My Conscience”, “Love So Strong”, “Got To Be There”, “Oh What A Day”, “Get It Off My Conscience”, “My Baby Loves Me”, “Bumpy Road Ahead”, “Man In My Life”, “Love Is Pretty”, “I’m The One You Need”, “Come & Get It”, and “Cravin For Your Love”. © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

The New Christy Minstrels were formed by singer/guitarist Randy Sparks in 1961. Sparks had been a solo musician in the late 1950s, mixing folk music with Broadway. In 1960 he formed the Randy Sparks Trio with his wife, Jackie Miller, and Nick Woods, but soon realized he wanted a larger group. At the time folk music was very popular and choral groups like the Norman Luboff Choir and Les Baxter’s Balladeers began incorporating it in their repertoires. Sparks created a 14-voice ensemble, The New Christy Minstrels, by combining his trio with another trio, The Inn Group (John Forsha, Karol Dugan and Jerry Yester), a quartet, The Fairmount Singers, and banjo player Billy Cudmore, folk-blues singer Terry Cudmore, folk singer Dolan Ellis and singer/guitarist Art Podell.Large commercial folk groups did not exist in those days, and The New Christy Minstrels burst onto the folk scene with “a barrage of color-coordinated blazers, starched petticoats, choreographed grins, and stage makeup.”[5] The group’s name was derived from Christy’s Minstrels, a blackface group formed by Philadelphia-born showman Edwin Pearce Christy in 1842. Sparks modeled his relationship to his band after legendary composer Stephen Foster, who had given many of his compositions to the original Minstrels to help popularize them.
