After years of touring and recording for other artists, Chris Combs brings his trio into the studio and comes out swinging with a collection of exciting new compositions. The forthcoming EP, Run Down The Ghost, was primarily recorded live in one day at The Closet Studios in Tulsa, OK and showcases the trio’s reputation for beautiful tunes and searing improvisations. Additional overdubs from pedal steel guitarist Hank Early (Turnpike Troubadours) and vibraphonist Nick Mancini complete the EP’s evolving sonic palate – creating a modern, diverse, jazz-influenced romp through Combs’ original works. Though truly modern in its aesthetic, Run Down The Ghost harkens back to the classic album-centric jazz, rock, and psychedelia releases of days gone by. The listener can hear influences spanning genre and era including J Dilla, Bill Frisell, Tortoise, Sly & the Family Stone, Blake Mills, Frank Ocean, and Ornette Coleman.

Ivor Novello award winning duo Joe Henson and Alexis Smith began collaborating in 2005 when they co-produced an album for Joe’s band Seventhsun. After realising they had a similar approach to life and wildly divergent musical tastes, they formed a creative partnership that quickly encompassed songwriting, production, and composition. The duo have worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry as well as being A-list composers for video games. 2014 saw the release of hit survival horror title Alien: Isolation, and they followed this up with 2017’s Horizon: Zero Dawn, the Playstation 4’s biggest selling new IP to date. They are currently composing the score for Ubisoft Québec’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The Flight’s television projects include the BAFTA nominated BBC documentary series Drugsland, and Kids on the Edge, produced for Channel 4 by Century Films.

“We’ve all been fans of each other from the start,” says Jimmie Dale Gilmore, “but the thing that’s always struck me about The Flatlanders is that, first and foremost, it’s a band rooted in friendship. Beyond the music, we just connect with each other in these deep and personal ways, and that’s been a lifelong treasure.”

This might be the best debut album ever delivered by an American blues band, a bold, powerful, hard-edged, soulful essay in electric blues with a native Southern ambience. Some lingering elements of the psychedelic era then drawing to a close can be found in “Dreams,” along with the template for the group’s on-stage workouts with “Whipping Post,” and a solid cover of Muddy Waters’ “Trouble No More.” There isn’t a bad song here, and only the fact that the group did even better the next time out keeps this from getting the highest possible rating.

A tribute to the dearly departed Duane, Eat a Peach rambles through two albums, running through a side of new songs, recorded post-Duane, spending a full album on live cuts from the Fillmore East sessions, then offering a round of studio tracks Duane completed before his death. On the first side, they do suggest the mellowness of the Dickey Betts-led Brothers and Sisters, particularly on the lovely “Melissa,” and this stands in direct contrast with the monumental live cuts that dominate the album. They’re at the best on the punchier covers of “One Way Out” and “Trouble No More,” both proof of the group’s exceptional talents as a roadhouse blues-rock band, but Duane does get his needed showcase on “Mountain Jam,” a sprawling 33-minute jam that may feature a lot of great playing, but is certainly a little hard for anyone outside of diehards to sit through. Apart from that cut, the record showcases the Allmans at their peak, and it’s hard not to feel sad as the acoustic guitars of “Little Martha” conclude the record, since this tribute isn’t just heartfelt, it offers proof of Duane Allman’s immense talents and contribution to the band.

Released a year after Eat a Peach, Brothers and Sisters shows off a leaner brand of musicianship, which, coupled with a pair of serious crowd-pleasers, “Ramblin’ Man” and “Jessica,” helped drive it to the top of the charts for a month and a half and to platinum record sales. This was the first album to feature the group’s new lineup, with Chuck Leavell on keyboards and Lamar Williams on bass, as well as Dickey Betts’ emergence as a singer alongside Gregg Allman. The tracks appear on the album in the order in which they were recorded, and the first three, up through “Ramblin’ Man,” feature Berry Oakley — their sound is rock-hard and crisp. The subsequent songs with Williams have the bass buried in the mix, and an overall muddier sound. The interplay between Leavell and Betts is beautiful on some songs, and Betts’ slide on “Pony Boy” is a dazzling showcase that surprised everybody. Despite its sales, Brothers and Sisters is not quite a classic album (although it was their best for the next 17 years), especially in the wake of the four that had appeared previously, but it served as a template for some killer stage performances, and it proved that the band could survive the deaths of two key members.

The Allman Brothers Band – Beginnings (1973) [Japanese SHM-SACD 2014] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

This is where the group’s release history gets complicated. Beginnings was originally put together by Atco as a double LP to encourage new fans who’d missed them to buy the group’s first two albums, and proved so successful that it was kept in print on CD by Polydor when it acquired the group’s catalog. Polydor’s single-CD version of this double LP, however, was substandard in audio quality, digitized from an LP production master, and their individual CDs of The Allman Brothers Band and Idlewild South were far superior. But when Capricorn got the library back in 1997, they remastered Beginnings along with the rest of the library.

The Allman Brothers Band – At Fillmore East (1971) [Reissue 2004] MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

The Allman Brothers Band – At Fillmore East (1971) [Reissue 2004]
PS3 Rip | 2x SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 80:31 minutes | Scans included | 5,30 GB
or FLAC 2.0 Stereo (converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | 78:30 mins | Scans | 1,72 GB

Whereas most great live rock albums are about energy, At Fillmore East is like a great live jazz session, where the pleasure comes from the musicians’ interaction and playing. The great thing about that is, the original album that brought the Allmans so much acclaim is as notable for its clever studio editing as it is for its performances. Producer Tom Dowd skillfully trimmed some of the performances down to relatively concise running time (edits later restored on the double-disc set The Fillmore Concerts), at times condensing several performances into one track. Far from being a sacrilege, this tactic helps present the Allmans in their best light, since even if the music isn’t necessarily concise (three tracks run over ten minutes, with two in the 20-minute range), it does showcase the group’s terrific instrumental interplay, letting each member (but particularly guitarist Duane and keyboardist/vocalist Gregg) shine. Even after the release of the unedited concerts, this original double album remains the pinnacle of the Allmans and Southern rock at its most elastic, bluesy, and jazzy.

The 3 Sounds – Introducing The 3 Sounds (1958) [Analogue Productions 2011] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

What’s remarkable about Introducing the Three Sounds is how the trio’s lightly swinging sound arrived fully intact. From the basis of this album, it sounds as if pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andrew Simpkins, and drummer William Dowdy have been playing together for years. There’s empathetic, nearly intuitive interplay between the three musicians, and Harris’s deft style already sounds mature and entirely distinctive. There’s no question that this music is easy to listen to, but dismissing it because of that would be wrong — there’s genuine style in their light touch and in Harris’ bluesy compositions. The Three Sounds never really deviated from the sound they established on Introducing, but that’s one of the things that is so remarkable — they were fully formed on their very first album. Even if it was a peak, it wasn’t the only peak in their career. They would often match the heights of this album, but this debut remains a shining jewel in their catalog, and the way to become acquainted with their sound.

THE END MACHINE are back with their sophomore album, “Phase2,” which follows on the heels of their well-received and successful self-titled debut album released in 2018. The End Machine features former classic lineup Dokken members George Lynch and Jeff Pilson with the awesome singer Robert Mason (Warrant, Lynch Mob) on lead vocals. Classic Dokken drummer Mick Brown handled drums on the first album, but is now retired, so in his place behind the drum kit is none other than his brother Steve Brown.

The new record builds on the great bluesy hard rock music of the debut, but sees the band move more towards the classic Dokken sound and the result is a 2.0 reboot of a killer music machine!

Pianist Oscar Peterson has long been such a consistent performer that none of his records are throwaways, but this particular set is weaker than most. Since several of the songs are the type that in the mid-’60s would get requested (such as “People,” “The Girl from Ipanema,” and “The Days of Wine and Roses”), the program would not seem to have much potential, but Peterson mostly uplifts the material (although not much could be done with “People”) and adds a few songs (such as his own “Goodbye, J.D.” and John Lewis’ “D & E”). Overall, this is a reasonably enjoyable Oscar Peterson session, featuring bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen.
