One of the greatest debuts in the history of rock, Mr. Tambourine Man was nothing less than a significant step in the evolution of rock & roll itself, demonstrating that intelligent lyrical content could be wedded to compelling electric guitar riffs and a solid backbeat. It was also the album that was most responsible for establishing folk-rock as a popular phenomenon, its most alluring traits being Roger McGuinn’s immediately distinctive 12-string Rickenbacker jangle and the band’s beautiful harmonies. The material was uniformly strong, whether they were interpreting Bob Dylan (on the title cut and three other songs, including the hit single “All I Really Want to Do”), Pete Seeger (“The Bells of Rhymney”), or Jackie DeShannon (“Don’t Doubt Yourself, Babe”). The originals were lyrically less challenging, but equally powerful musically, especially Gene Clark’s “I Knew I’d Want You,” “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better,” and “Here Without You”; “It’s No Use” showed a tougher, harder-rocking side and a guitar solo with hints of psychedelia.

Without question, the Byrds were one of the great bands of the ’60s and one of the few American bands of their time to continually turn out inventive, compelling albums. As they were recording a series of fine records, they turned out a number of classic singles that unquestionably defined their era. The Byrds’ Greatest Hits does an excellent job of chronicling the peak years of their popularity before they went country-rock on 1968’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Apart from the minor hits “It Won’t Be Wrong,” “Set You Free This Time,” and “Have You Seen Her Face,” all of the group’s hit singles – from 1965’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” to 1967’s “My Back Pages” – are included: “All I Really Want to Do,” “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season),” “Eight Miles High,” “5D (Fifth Dimension),” “Mr. Spaceman,” and “So You Want to Be a Rock N’ Roll Star.” Yes, some great songs were left behind on the albums, but important cuts like “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better,” “The Bells of Rhymney,” and “Chimes of Freedom” are added, making this pretty close to a definitive single-disc summary of the Byrds’ prime.

The second Butterfield album had an even greater effect on music history, paving the way for experimentation that is still being explored today. This came in the form of an extended blues-rock solo (some 13 minutes) — a real fusion of jazz and blues inspired by the Indian raga. This groundbreaking instrumental was the first of its kind and marks the root from which the acid rock tradition emerged.

The Buggles – The Age Of Plastic (1980) [Japanese SHM-SACD 2014] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

The Buggles – The Age Of Plastic (1980) [Japanese SHM-SACD 2014]
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 47:49 minutes | Scans included | 1,94 GB
or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | Full Scans included | 920 MB

The fun, quirky single “Video Killed the Radio Star” garnered The Buggles international attention in 1980, but it was just one of The Age of Plastic’s fascinating, futuristic visions. From the title track’s opening strains, Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes transform your living room into a world of Jetson-like proportions. It’s a world, though, where technology is seen for what it is — full of both promise and frightening implications. On “I Love You Miss Robot,” a metaphorical love affair with a robot explores modern man’s relationship to, and dependence on, technology. “Kid Dynamo”‘s spirited tempo, biting lyrics, and menacing vocal track questions the loss of imagination plaguing the mass media age. For the most part, The Age of Plastic is a fun record that doesn’t need to be taken too seriously, though a subtle sense of loss is woven throughout. Variety is the constant and tracks vary from the giddy “Video,” to the dark and pulsating “Johnny on the Monorail..” The vision here is so beautifully articulated that the superb musicianship and production wizardry is easily overlooked. Paradoxically, Horn and Downes employed electronic devices (which were considered new and cutting edge in the late seventies) to create an album which, at times, spoke eloquently about their drawbacks. With The Age of Plastic, Horn and Downes stamped an indelible image in the collective pop psyche. What is equally impressive is the sound of this disc given its analog origins and 1980-release date. While hiss can be heard in some of the quieter passages, it would be difficult to find a record from this era that sounds half as good. Pop rarely reaches these heights.

Soulville is one of the highlights of Ben Webster’s golden era. From 1953 to 1959 Webster recorded 10 landmark albums showcasing his swing tenor saxophone, and this album from 1957 is considered a classic. Soulville has it all: there’s cool groovy jazz, a bit of soul, a bit of blues, a sense of longing and a whole lot of romance on this ballad-heavy collection. The quintet in the credits consists of Webster, drummer Stan Levey and the Oscar Peterson Trio.

Vincent Eugene Craddock (February 11, 1935 – October 12, 1971), known as Gene Vincent, was an American musician who pioneered the styles of rockabilly and rock and roll. His 1956 top ten hit with his backing band the Blue Caps, “Be-Bop-a-Lula”, is considered a significant early example of rockabilly. His chart career was brief, especially in his home country of the US, where he notched three top 40 hits in 1956 and 1957, and never charted in the top 100 again. In the UK, he was a somewhat bigger star, racking up eight top 40 hits from 1956 to 1961.

Vincent was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. He is sometimes referred to by his somewhat unusual nickname/moniker the “Screaming End”.

Supplementary to his legendary Beethoven cycles for Decca are Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt’s recordings for Philips, Mercury, Deutsche Grammophon and Accord. They date from 1944 (Sutermeister) to 1972, when he made his last recording, fittingly by Mozart (Die Gärtnerin aus Liebe) a composer whom he revered above all: “We are too intimate friends … I can’t even explain what it is I feel when I listen to his music, that makes my eyes damp and my breath catch. … At the end of my life I should like to dissolve myself completely in Mozart’s music.”
