Rosalind Ventris’s debut solo album features a selection of music for unacccompanied viola composed between 1930 (Imogen Holst’s impressive Suite for Viola) and the present day (a 2020 lockdown miniature by Thea Musgrave).
The largely British and Irish programme allows Ventris to revive substantial works by important yet still often overlooked twentieth-century composers – not only Holst but also Lillian Fuchs, Elizabeth Maconchy, Elisabeth Lutyens and Grażyna Bacewicz – alongside more recent additions to the repertoire from Musgrave, Sally Beamish and Amanda Feery.
With several of the composers themselves professional string players, this is, in Ventris’s words, ‘wonderful music – that just happens to be by women composers’.

Rosemary Hodgson’s Walsingham is an intricately constructed musical journey exploring themes of mysticism and pilgrimage.
In the 11th century the Virgin Mary appeared to a noble woman called Richeldis de Faverche in Norfolk England, and there in Walsingham, the shrine to the Holy Family
was built. It became a spiritual destination for English and international pilgrims alike and remains so to this very day. When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in the 16th Century, a lament for the loss of this Holy Place was imbedded in a song whose tune, known as Walsingham, captured the imagination of renaissance composers.

Rosalía has shared ‘Motomami +’, a deluxe edition of her latest album ‘Motomami’ that features four previously-unreleased songs. The updated tracklist for the expanded version of ‘Motomami’ includes ‘Despechá’ – which was released as a single in July – plus new additions ‘Aislamiento’, ‘La Kilié’, ‘LAX’ and ‘Chiri’. It also includes a remix of album cut ‘Candy’ that features Chencho Corleone of defunct Puerto Rican reggaeton duo Plan B, and a live version of ‘La Fama’ recorded at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona.

The London harpist Rosanna Rolton, winner of the International Competition ‘Suoni d’Arpa’ in 2014, shows her skills in a repertoire completely dedicated to the Italian harpsichordists of the eighteenth century, rediscovering those ancient and solid bonds, which have united the repertoire for keyboard to that of the harp. In the wake of that connection that has constantly intersected various aspects of musical production, from solo concerts to teaching, from basso continuo to singing accompaniment, the anthology proposed by Rosanna Rolton proposes compositions drawn by the master harpsichordists of the Neapolitan school and Venetian, who created that musical substratum making, from the second half of the eighteenth century the Italian ‘gallant style’, whose roots were greatly re-evaluated during the chamber and symphonic renaissance of the early twentieth century.

Argentine vocalist Roxana Amed further expands her globally cross-pollinated sound on 2021’s poetically expressive Ontology. A native of Buenos Aires, Amed has lived in Miami since relocating to the United States in 2013. Even prior to her move, she had already built a vibrant discography blending South American musical traditions with pop, rock, and harmonically nuanced post-bop jazz. With Ontology, she pushes her stylistically diverse approach to an even higher level, performing her own lyrical original songs alongside compositions by Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, and Alberto Ginastera. Helping her achieve her lush, deeply engaging sound is her ensemble featuring saxophonist Mark Small, pianist Martin Bejerano, bassist Edward Perez, and drummer Ludwig Alfonso. Also adding flavor are a handful of guest collaborators, including guitarists Tim Jago and Aaron Lebos, drummer Rodolfo Zuniga, and bassists Lowell Ringel and Carlo De Rosa. There’s a sculptural quality to much of Amed’s music that’s especially evident on tracks like “Peaceful,” which she sings in languorous harmony with saxophonist Small. Even when she’s singing largely on her own with minimal rubato accompaniment, as on her chamber jazz rendition of Shorter’s impressionistic “Virgo,” Amed’s voice is transfixing, like a classical cellist in meditative rapture. It’s an artful sound, bringing to mind the work of British singer Norma Winstone as well as the equally progressive recordings of guitarist Pat Metheny. While Amed sings in both English and Spanish, she often takes a more instrumental approach, eschewing lyrics on the vibrant bop-meets-tango “Milonga Por La Auscencia” and diving headlong into the propulsive Latin jazz rhythms of Ginestera’s “Danza del Viejo Boyero.” Listening to Ontology is a deeply textured, almost metaphysical experience as Amed deftly pulls together the distinct creative and cultural threads that make up the colorful weft of her artistic identity.
