This compilation collects a number of 7” singles produced by Audio Productions Ltd. in Kenya’s capital Nairobi in the first half of the 1980s and released on the Wendo, Lulus, Mlima and APL imprints.
The bands featured on this release are the New Gatanga Boys, Ruwengo Bros Band, Banana Hill Band and Les Victoria ‘C’ Kings from Kenya, Les Moto Moto and Orch Les Volcano from Tanzania (the latter being led here by Charles Ray Kasembe after the death of the legendary Mbaraka Mwinshehe). The closing track is by Orch Zaituken Band, whose name is a contraction of the countries its members came from: Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. The group is emblematic of the Kenyan capital’s role as a magnet for East African musicians seeking to earn a living by recording and playing live in the 1970s and 1980s.

The 18 Nocturnes by John Field (1782-1837) are timeless jewels of the piano repertoire. With his works, the Irish composer and pianist built a bridge between the Classical and Romantic periods and is often regarded as a pioneer of the nocturne, a genre that was later made famous by Chopin. Fields’ nocturnes are characterized by their dreamy, introspective and lyrical character lyrical character. They are “tone paintings of the night”, each piece a tender, emotional journey through the moonlit landscapes of the soul. The innovative use of the sustaining pedal and the gentle, singing melodies create a unique atmosphere. The nocturnes are not virtuoso showpieces, but intimate expressions of feeling. They offer pianists the opportunity to explore fine phrasing and nuanced dynamics, which requires both technical precision and deep emotional connection. Notable examples include the Nocturne No. 2 in C minor, a haunting piece that inspired later composers such as Chopin, and the Nocturne No. 5 in B flat major with its delicate, cascading arpeggios. The young English pianist Tyler Hay has made a name for himself as one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation with his recordings for Piano Classics of works by Liszt (PCL 10138), John Ogdon (PCL 10132) and Kalkbrenner (PCL 10190). “Tyler Hay impresses me deeply. He is an award-winning product of the Purcell School, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal College of Music. His technique is more than equal to anything on offer here and he combines this with a subtle sense of rubato, a keen sense of style and a real commitment to the music. I hope to hear more from him.”

Having had success in South Africa in the early 1960s with his band Johnny and the G-Men, as well as a solo artist, Kongos went to the UK in 1966, to pursue his musical career. His first UK based group, Floribunda Rose, formed in April 1967, comprised the British musicians, Pete Clifford (guitar) (born Peter William Frederick Clifford, 10 May 1943, Whetstone, North London) and Jack Russell (bass, vocals) (born 29 April 1944, Caerleon, South Wales), who had come to South Africa in June 1965 with The 004; drummer Nick ‘Doc’ Dokter (born 24 July 1945, Kampen, Overijssel, the Netherlands), a latter day member of 004; and the Cyprus-born keyboard player Chris Demetriou from John E Sharpe and the Squires. After one single, “Linda Loves Linda”, Clifford returned to South Africa to join The Bats and Dokter moved to Canada and worked with Five Man Cargo. Drummer Henry Spinetti joined and the remaining members recorded three singles as Scrugg.
After 18 months of gigging in Britain and Europe with his bands Floribunda Rose and Scrugg, and five singles later, he released his first solo album, Confusions About a Goldfish (1969), on the Dawn record label.
