REINHARD ‘DICKY’ TARRACH is a distinguished drummer and producer and no stranger to making chart-topping music. Initially, Dicky saw success with ground-breaking rock band the Rattles between 1963-1967. They were largely successful in Germany, playing to massive crowds as a support act for the Beatles on the German leg of their 1966 tour. In 1968 they formed Wonderland and released the single ‘Moscow’ reaching No.2 on the German charts. After Wonderland dissolved, Dicky became a sought-after session player. He later formed the legendary German New Wave band Moti Special alongside Nils Tuxen (guitar), Manfred Thiers (vocals) and Michael Cretu (keyboards) in 1981. Their 1984 track ‘Cold Days, Hot Nights’ remains their most emblematic title, placing highly across European charts. With their 1985 debut album ‘Motivation’ the band established themselves as a major player in the European musical landscape. Michael Cretu would leave the band to follow his career as a producer for artists such as Sandra and Enigma, and so Moti Special split up. Dicky developed as a producer and multi-instrumentalist, releasing the 1986 album ‘Big Bang’ under the name Tarracco, his new extravagant synth-pop act. He garnered a cult following of fans excited and intrigued by his progressive approach to production, especially on stand-out tracks such as ‘Sultana’, which brought new life to Titanic’s original rock song. The booming ‘Feel The Thunder’ also featured writing and performance from the highly experienced rock keyboardist Phil Lanzon of Uriah Heep fame. In 2022, experts of their craft IMT reinvigorated the same track with an electrifying remix. This timely reissue includes a bonus remix of ‘Feel The Thunder’ and is sure to excite Tarracco fans old and new.

Friedrich “Fritz” Kreisler was an Austrian-born American violinist and composer. One of the most noted violin masters of his day, and regarded as one of the greatest violinists of all time, he was known for his sweet tone and expressive phrasing. Like many great violinists of his generation, he produced a characteristic sound which was immediately recognizable as his own. Although it derived in many respects from the Franco-Belgian school, his style is nonetheless reminiscent of the gemütlich (cozy) lifestyle of pre-war Vienna.

Conceived around a time of strong political, social and cultural turmoil in the UK and elsewhere, a time ridden with a deep sense of uncertainty and unease, the music resonates with feelings of alienation and powerlessness as well as convey ideas of anger and latent violence. Working with heavily textured drones as well as sharp edged sounds and sustained rhythms to echo and articulate those feelings, some of the tracks were re-worked until their final forms had lost all relation with their initial skeleton, something that was partly influenced by the idea of simulacra not representing the real anymore, inspired by the reading of ‘Simulacra and Simulation’ by Jean Baudrillard and ‘The Weird and the Eerie’ by Mark Fisher. The addition of rhythmic structures, a new step for Savy, helped explore the idea of power by saturating the sonic landscape with repetition and pulsations. On certain tracks rhythms are implied, slowly disappearing or simply absent to reflect this idea of the real not being there anymore.

Heart Under, Just Mustard’s second album, asks you to forget what you know. At every turn, this remarkable record reconfigures and stretches the ideas and ambition of a rock band, and turns a year of lockdown and personal struggles into a breathtaking artistic statement. The music the five friends from Dundalk, Ireland make is strikingly untraditional. Though to look at them, it appears that the band are a five-piece with uniform make-up of a vocalist, two guitarists, a bassist and a drummer, not a single one of them utilizes their instrument in a confined or regular fashion. Guitarists David Noonan and Mete Kalyoncuoglu make their six-strings shriek and wail, the sounds produced sounding like everything from whirring machinery to horror movie monsters. Behind them, drummer Shane Maguire uses the rim of his drums almost as much as the skins, providing a clattering, metallic backbeat. Most of the melodies on offer poke through from Rob Clarke’s inventive, nodding bass lines. Then there’s Katie on vocals; she’s the transfixing focal point of the band. Across its 10 tracks, the album presents a coherent style and ethos – those scything guitars, Katie’s magical vocals – but still incorporates a wide and untethered vision. There are brooding, atmospheric rock songs and others that apply a lighter, dreamier touch, all tied together with impeccable instrumentation and a united vision. Heart Under serves as the next stage of this development, with every instrument brilliantly pushed to its limit and every boundary of the band stretched.

The Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35 was the only concerto for violin composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Composed in 1878, it is one of the best-known violin concertos.

The concerto was composed in Clarens, Switzerland, where Tchaikovsky was recovering from the fallout of his ill-fated marriage. The concerto was influenced by Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole and was composed with the help of Tchaikovsky’s pupil and probable former lover, Iosif Kotek. Despite Tchaikovsky’s original intention to dedicate the work to Kotek, he instead dedicated it to Leopold Auer due to societal pressures. Auer, however, refused to perform it, and the premiere was given by Adolph Brodsky in 1881 to mixed reviews. The piece, which Tchaikovsky later rededicated to Brodsky, has since become a staple of the violin repertoire. The concerto has three movements, is scored for solo violin and orchestra, and typically runs for about 35 minutes.

Hans Knappertsbusch (born March 12, 1888 in Elberfeld (today: Wuppertal); October 25, 1965 in Munich) was a German conductor.

Hans Knappertsbusch was born as the son of a manufacturer from Elberfeld. He already showed his interest in conducting as a student by conducting the orchestra of the local gymnasium. After graduating from school, he studied at the conservatory in Cologne. There he learned conducting from the then famous Fritz Steinbach. From 1909, his early work as a Kapellmeister included Mülheim an der Ruhr, Bochum, Elberfeld and Leipzig. At the same time, he assisted the then festival director Siegfried Wagner and, above all, the Wagner conductor Hans Richter in Bayreuth from 1909 to 1912. This was a time that had a formative influence on his musical interpretation style and initiated his development as a Wagner conductor of international stature. In 1914 he first gained attention by directing the Wagner Festival in Holland. His path then led him to Munich via the Dessau Court Opera, where he became Germany’s youngest general music director in 1919. Here he succeeded Bruno Walter as director of the Bavarian State Opera and the Academy Concerts at the Odeon in 1922, a position he held until 1935. in 1924 he was appointed professor…

The Gürzenich Orchestra and its chief conductor François-Xavier Roth dedicate their first release on myrios classics to two symphonies by Robert Schumann. The album is based on live recordings made at Cologne’s Philharmonie.

In 1841, Robert Schumann finally had the breakthrough he had long dreamed of as an orchestral composer. He created no less than two works that year: his first, the »Spring Symphony«, and a piece he originally conceived as a »Symphonistic Fantasy« and which later turned into his Symphony in D-minor.

The »Spring Symphony« was written in the coldest depth of winter. It is a work of longing which knows only one direction: growth, blossoming, forging a path towards light and new life. The Symphony No. 4 in D-minor, on the other hand, seems far more shadowy and personal, »a work created from the depths of the soul«, as Clara Schumann confided in her diary. The audience, however, failed to warm to the impetuous work, leading Robert Schumann to put it aside in resignation after the first performance. Only ten years later, he revised the work, which then appeared as his Fourth Symphony.

This album combines the »Spring Symphony« with the first version of the Symphony in D-minor – a version preferred by several of Schumann’s friends, including Johannes Brahms. During Schumann’s lifetime, however, it was never performed again. It was the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne which gave its next performance in 1889, under the baton of Gürzenich kapellmeister Franz Wüllner.

François-Xavier Roth also prefers the original version of 1841. »In its sparser instrumentation, it is more radical, demanding extreme dedication from all of us.«

“Schumann at his best!” (F.A.Z.)
