Of course, when we talk about great male jazz singers, most of us think of the classic names: Billy Eckstine, Ray Charles, Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, Johnny Hartman and many would add Frank Sinatra, who could swing better than most, if he wanted. So what a coincidence that all these names can be found in our extensive jazz catalog!

To this ever-growing list of artists, we now add the name of Mark Murphy. Maybe not a name that immediately comes to mind, but hey, the man born in New York in 1932 has recorded over 50 albums! This man won the Down Beat Readers Poll in 1996 and 1997, as well as in 2000 and 2001, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best jazz Vocal Performance five times. This man was a real jazz singer.

Since this is AVID, we have of course focused on Mark’s early career and here we present his first two releases from the years 1956 and 1957 and check his progress some time later with two more from the years 1960 and 1961. To illustrate the importance of Mark Murphy in the jazz world, here is a short list of some of the great jazz musicians who can be heard on our albums. Ralph Burns, Ernie Wilkins, Clark Terry, Blue Mitchell, Conte Candoli, Bill Holman, Joe Mondragon, Stan Levey, Mel Lewis, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Barry Galbraith, Melba Liston, Urbie Green and Jimmy Cobb. For his album “Hip Parade” even none other than Miss Peggy Lee wrote the lyrics! Mark Murphy had a fabulous career and passed away in 2015, having recorded over 50 albums.
