If curiosity has a name, then it is Joachim Kühn. In fact, there are few jazz musicians who have spanned the musical arc as broadly as the pianist, who will turn 70 on March 15 – from free to to fusion jazz to occidental art music to world music. Kühn’s ear is always on the pulse of the times, and so it’s not surprising that he also repeatedly seeks proximity to young visionary musicians – “Moscow” is evidence of this:

When Joachim Kühn received an invitation from the Goethe Institute to play two concerts in Russia, he immediately made inquiries about the scene there. One name in particular was recommended to him: Alexey Kruglov. The saxophonist, born in 1979 Saxophonist is considered one of the greatest Russian jazz talents. Kühn immediately recognized himself in Kruglov. Someone who thought musically in a similar way when he was still so young: a young savage whose playing is as impressive for its power and explosiveness as for its filigree and explosiveness as well as filigree and soul. A man with many facets and the desire to discover new things.

Kühn contacted Kruglov. The afternoon before his Moscow concert, they met in person for the first time, and then musically on stage that evening the stage. Kruglov joined in for a few numbers. The chemistry was spontaneous. After that, things happened very quickly: Kühn’s Moscow sightseeing tour the next day was canceled without further ado and the studio of the Russian radio station was rented instead. Each of the two musicians brought along a few pieces, and Kühn also had two titles by Ornette Coleman in his luggage. The album was recorded in just four hours it’s all about the feeling,” says Kühn about the recording session. This can be heard and felt in every note – at the meeting of two generations of musicians.
