Reissiger’s string quartets follow the classical-romantic tradition as found in Mendelssohn and Schumann. Occasionally one recognises the influence of opera music, both German, influenced by Reissiger’s predecessor Carl Maria von Weber, and Italian, which was very present in Dresden in Reissiger’s time. There are clear echoes of Reissiger’s idol Franz Schubert and of course his Leipzig colleague Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Reissiger’s music is thoroughly individual, and the combination of the most diverse influences in particular testifies to Reissiger’s cosmopolitan education. Rediscovering Reissiger’s music also means bringing an important piece of German music history to light.

Only a relatively small proportion of Haydn’s works are present in today’s concert repertoire. While every compositional exercise by other composers, no matter how insignificant, has been catalogued, it is extremely difficult to get an overview of the enormous oeuvre of the father of Viennese classical music. Haydn’s long life certainly plays a role in this: born in the High Baroque period, he experienced the zenith of the Classical period and still touched on the beginnings of Romanticism in his old age. The scoring with two violins instead of the more usual violin and viola has certainly also contributed to the fact that a chamber music collection that is particularly attractive in many respects has remained almost completely unknown until now.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) was one of the most influential composers of the Late-Renaissance and Early-Baroque. He was organist of the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam for 44 years. His influence was enormous, he attracted composers from many European countries to Amsterdam to learn his art. Even the great Johann Sebastian Bach acknowledged his superior craftsmanship. Sweelinck’s keyboard music is divided into 4 groups: Fantasias, Toccatas, Chorale variations (sacred works), Variations on Dances (secular works). Traditionally Dances were performed on the harpsichord, Chorale Variations on the organ. Fantasias, Toccatas, Fugues and Ricercari had only a non-specific “keyboard” destination. This new recording features a fine selection of Sweelinck’s keyboard works, played on the modern piano, a justifiable practice, as Sweelinck himself in many cases did not specify the instrument for his compositions. As is often the case when transcribing good music for another instrument: the strength and beauty of the music stays intact, and a new light shines on these timeless masterpieces. After studying in his home town of Cagliari Andrea Vivanet went to Hungary to study with Balazs Szokolay and Istvan Lantos at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest where he obtained the Master Degree with honors in piano performance. During this period he also attended classes with Miklos Perenyi, Andras Keller, Gabor Csalog and Ferenc Rados. He took part in masterclasses with Franco Rossi, Mikhail Voskresenky and Paul Badura Skoda.

I guess comparing Ame Son to Gong is no surprise as they backed Daevid Allen’s Bananamoon (not the lineup that recorded the Bananamoon album from 1971, that one was more or less an all-star recording, but the original Bananamoon, the band he was in after being denied reentry into England). Helps that the vocals sound unmistakably like Daevid Allen too. The group consisted of vocalist/drummer Marc Blanc, guitarist Bernard Lavialle, bassist Patrick Fontaine, and flautist/vocalist Francois Garrel. Bernard Lavialle was already family with me because in 1976 he played with former Red Noise member Patrick Vian on his album Bruits et Temps Analogues, but hardly sounded like Ame Son (or Red Noise), but instead an electronic album (and an excellent one at it too).

During the period of lockdown in 2020, tenor Alessandro Fisher and his wife spent many hours in their garden. A heightened awareness of the beauty of nature, the flowers in their garden and the changes to the garden as winter moved to spring, and then to summer formed the basis of this beautifully curated recital.
All the songs are about flowers, the language of flowers, and flowers as a tokens of love. Above all, the album is about the way songs of the many composers on this album reference deep human emotions and the role of flowers in these emotions.
Where words fail, the language of flowers and nature take over. Nature regenerates, life continues, though for some composers, the short- lived glory of flowers is also an allegory for loss, or indeed the transience of romantic love.
This live recording was made by BBC Radio 3 at the Wigmore Hall in London. Alessandro was the recipient of a BBT Fellowship in 2022.
