Eugene Ormandy KBE (born Jenő Blau; November 18, 1899 – March 12, 1985) was a Hungarian-American conductor and violinist, best known for his association with the Philadelphia Orchestra, as its music director. His 44-year association with the orchestra is one of the longest enjoyed by any conductor with a single orchestra. Under his baton, the Philadelphia Orchestra had three gold records and won two Grammy Awards.

Since its inception as the “First Annual American Jazz Festival” in 1954, the Newport Jazz Festival set the standard for large scale outdoor summer music gatherings. Subsequent music festivals — from Newport Folk through Montreux, Monterey Pop, Woodstock, Coachella and beyond — have Newport Jazz to thank for establishing the concept and reality of a music community coming together for a shared outdoor concert experience.
With the 60th anniversary edition of the Newport Jazz Festival, returning to its original home at the Casino and at Fort Adams State Park on August 1, 2, 3 in Newport, Rhode Island, music fans can enjoy some of the Festival’s finest performances from Duke Ellington, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Ella Fitzgerald and Lionel Hampton on six new digital releases.
Jazz impresario and Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein called Duke Ellington’s 1956 concert at Newport, “the greatest performance of [Ellington’s] career,” adding that the music “stood for everything that jazz had been and could be.” The digital edition of Ellington At Newport: The Original Album restores the record to its original sequence while adding four live performances that first appeared on Duke Ellington and The Buck Clayton All Stars At Newport (a companion album released in 1956).

For Bill Evans’ second solo record of unaccompanied but overdubbed piano solos, he decided to simplify the concept used in Conversations with Myself (which had him playing three pianos) by only playing two this time. The program is brief, but Evans plays quite well throughout. In particular, his versions of Johnny Mandel’s “Emily” and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” are most memorable. A thoughtful and (despite the overdubbing) spontaneous-sounding set of melodic music.

Nodens Ictus are a British electronic music project formed by Ed Wynne and Joie Hinton in 1986 as an ethereal offshoot of UK psychedelic rock band Ozric Tentacles. The Cozmic Key was the first Nodens album for 17 years when self-released in December 2017. With various line-ups over the years, the band have played live semi-frequently since the late ’80’s often supporting Ozric shows. Ed Wynne is, without doubt, a gifted instrumentalist, a visionary, a prodigal symphonist and one of the UK’s leading influential musicians. He is credited as one of the linchpins of the UK festival scene’s re-emergence along with his band Ozric Tentacles, who formed at Stonehenge Free Festival 1983 and became staples of the Glastonbury Festival, with their most recent performance at Glastonbury in 2016 on the Glade stage.
