On 17 July 1717, King George I of England ‘went up by Water to Chelsea, and was entertain’d with an excellent Consort of Musick . . . composed specially by the famous Handel’. The fifty musicians cost the . . . princely sum of £150 – but their hunting horns, trumpets, flutes and the rest so delighted the company that the concert was repeated three times in the course of the evening. No doubt the matchless virtuosos of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin will repeat that feat in your living room!

Improvisation on the keyboard was very much expected of the leading classical musical minds in earlier years. And what came about was framed by the compositional practices of the time. So Johann Sebastian Bach might improvise elaborate fugues based on a particular theme; Mozart was known to create brilliant variations spontaneously on a theme given to him at the spur-of-the-moment. Fantasias were possible and were another, more free option, but of course what came out was something the composer might have more carefully worked over in a formal composition. There were definite resonances between the improvised and the composed.

For five decades, vocalist-composer Meredith Monk has explored non-verbal vocal sound that lay beneath and beyond language. This exploration has led her to create an art that “sings, dances and meditates on timeless forces.” Voices and instruments have equal weight: sometimes each is heard alone; sometimes they are blended to form a new, mysterious sound; sometimes they are combined to create intricate, layered, yet transparent sonic landscapes.

“The Rest Of My Life” is the 1976 album by legendary soul diva Martha Reeves which was expanded and includes 7 Bonus Tracks with 2 Tracks are Un-Released Gems. Re-Mastered from the original master tapes by Sean Brennan, at Battery Studio’s. Produced by Bert DeCoteaux, General Johnson, Tony Camillo, and Tony Silvester. Tony Silvester, General Johnson, Tony Camillo, and Bert DeCoteaux – working independently resulted in Martha’s best post-Motown release to date. The material and arrangements suit her voice and style and the release is more of what you expect from the Detroit diva. Included is Martha’s original version of Gwen Guthrie and Pat Grant’s “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter,” a song later popularized by Angela Bofill. Reeves’ version of Gamble & Huff’s “Now That We Found Love” is one of the better cuts; Martha sings it with as much conviction as the O’Jays, who first waxed it. “Thank You” is an uptempo romp produced by General Johnson, who has Reeves reaching for notes like her former producers at Motown did which became very reminiscent of her classic Jimmy Mack. Plus, you can count on Martha to pour every ounce of emotion into a ballad, and this album has some excellent slower songs, including the title track. “The Rest Of My Life” is regarded as one of Martha Reeves’ best albums ever, including the releases with The Vandellas.

Since making his debut as a leader with 2001’s At Last, Marcus Strickland has established a reputation as a composer of remarkable depth and breadth. On Nihil Novi, his first Blue Note offering, Strickland showcases a new band – trumpeter Keyon Harrold, keyboardists Mitch Henry and Masayuki Hirano, bassist Kyle Miles, and drummer Charles Haynes. His new tunes offer an even greater array of styles, harmonic textures, and dynamics, and reveal his preoccupation with hip-hop beatmaking. (This isn’t a jazz/hip-hop fusion record.) Nihil Novi was expertly and empathetically produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, who also guests on bass. Strickland also brings in some old friends and allies, including Robert Glasper, Chris Dave, Pino Palladino, and Chris Bruce. (more…)
