Fred Chapellier has now joined the ranks of the top French blues rock guitarists. Semi-finalist at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis (the largest gathering of blues musicians in the world) and having toured with some of the best French vocalists, all this managed to propel him front stage.

Cole was one of the Jazz artists that Hugh’s mother often played in the family home and his music became part of the soundtrack of Hugh’s formative years before his mother’s untimely death when he was 7 years old. After having released and toured two self penned albums distinctly pop on Universal records, Hugh was invited to tour and record with French/Italian Jazz pianist and producer Eric Legnini. Michael Jackson’s double-disc HIStory: Past, Present, and Future, Book I is a monumental achievement of ego. Titled “HIStory Begins,” the first disc is a collection of his post-Motown hits, featuring some of the greatest music in pop history, including “Billie Jean,” “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” “Beat It,” and “Rock with You.” It leaves some hits out — including the number ones “Say Say Say” and “Dirty Diana” — yet it’s filled with enough prime material to be thoroughly intoxicating. That can’t be said for the second disc, called “HIStory Continues” and consisting entirely of new material — which also happens to be the first material he released since being accused of child molestation. “HIStory Continues” is easily the most personal album Jackson has recorded. References to the scandal permeate almost every song, creating a thick atmosphere of paranoia. If Jackson’s music had been the equal of Thriller or Bad, the nervous, vindictive lyrics wouldn’t have been quite as overbearing. However, “HIStory Continues” reiterates musical ideas Jackson had been exploring since Bad. Jackson certainly tries to stay contemporary, yet he has a tendency to smooth out all of his rougher musical edges with show-biz schmaltz. Occasionally, Jackson produces some well-crafted pop that ranks with his best material: R. Kelly’s “You Are Not Alone” is seductive, “Scream” improves on the slamming beats of his earlier single “Jam,” and “Stranger in Moscow” is one of his most haunting ballads. On this release famous soprano Véronique Gens performs Herminie and Les Nuits d’été by Hector Berlioz and Shéhérazade by Maurice Ravel with the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire under the baton of its music director John Axelrod.
Véronique Gens is internationally recognised as one of the greatest sopranos. She has made a big career with baroque repertoire and Mozart, but French repertoire, especially Berlioz and Ravel, are “as natural to her as the air that she breathes”. Her French remains a model of immaculate diction, fluid and luminous.
Having a very special relationship to Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’été and Herminie, Véronique Gens combines them on this release with Shéhérazade by Ravel, which conjures up a totally different world. On this CD Herminie is released the first time with Véronique Gens.
The charismatic conductor John Axelrod is music director of the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire since 2009, following the philosophy of being “open to the world” by extraordinarily diverse repertoire choices and innovative programming. Also internationally he is a sought after conductor both for concerts and opera productions.
Founded in 1971, the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, a “national” orchestra since 1996, is based in two cities, in Angers and Nantes. Today about 200 concerts attract yearly about 200,000 listeners, among them more than 10,000 subscribers. (more…)

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass sold more albums than almost anyone else in the ’60s, so it’s no surprise that any goofball with a trumpet would try to cash in on their effortlessly enjoyable, upbeat, instrumental style. And, indeed, there were plenty of those. Making a vocal album, however, is another story. Who in their right mind would attempt an entire album of singing new words to famous instrumentals?
But that is what Big Band veterans the Modernaires did, setting lyrics to Alpert & Co.’s numerous hit tunes (apart from songs like “All My Loving” that, of course, already had lyrics). The tight-harmony vocal quintet used to sing with the likes of Glen Miller back in the ’40s, so presumably this was their attempt to get, er, “mod.” Of course, it’s utterly ridiculous, even more removed from anything resembling actual Mexican music than even Alpert was. But like the TJ Brass itself, it’s so gosh-darn HAPPY! that it’s hard to resist.
