Over the last 2 years, Daniel Herskedal, Helge Andreas Norbakken and Eyolf Dale (also on Edition) have defined themselves as one of the most unique and innovative small ensembles in Europe today, bringing together a vast mix of influences from Folk, Jazz, Classical and Arabic music.
The sublime Slow Eastbound Train, released in 2015, took Herskedal’s international profile to new heights. He toured extensively throughout Europe and Japan, culminating in a 26min commission from the BBC Concert Orchestra, performed at London Jazz Festival 2016.
A strong Arabic influence runs throughout The Roc, which has its roots in inspiring trips Herskedal made to Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. Themes of place and travelling are ever-present, as they were on Slow Eastbound Train. The titles of some of the compositions originate from the names of scales (Kurd, Bayat, Nahawand To Kurd) and rhythms (Thuraaya) used in them; others from Arabic sayings (There Are Three Things You Cannot Hide; Love, Smoke And A Man Riding On A Camel) and places that inspired the musicians (Hijaz Train Station). The title of the LP itself is a reference to the great bird of pan-Asian mythology.

In 1973 Carlos Santana and The Santana Band were now one of the world’s most loved rock and fusion bands of all time. After several studio albums and the two collaboration albums with Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles Live and Love Devotion Surrender with John McLaughlin, the world was now buzzing around the energy that these superstars would lay down on vinyl with the soon to be rock/jazz/funk powerhouse Welcome.

Featuring a cross section of Santana classics such as “Going Home,” “Light of Life” and “When I Look Into Your Eyes,” plus the exotic rhythms and jams on workouts such as Santana and John McLaughlin’s “Flame – Sky,” and the stellar John Coltrane masterpiece interpretation” Welcome, Carlos Santana’s guitar was truly a voice heard around the musical world.

Along with the legendary Carlos Santana on guitar and vocal, he is joined with original Santana band mates Michael Shrieve on his dynamic drums, Doug Rauch on his prolific bass, Jose Areas on hard hitting percussion, plus the brilliant acid jazz superstar Leon Thomas on vocals, the celebrated Latin percussionist Armando Peraza, the legendary John McLaughlin on guitar, Joe Farrell on flute, and the stellar keyboard work of long time Santana associate Tom Coster. Featuring a full seventeen songs whose history can be traced back decades or even centuries through the Appalachian region, From The Mountaintop, and renowned Cellist, Dave Eggar, assemble an all-star cast of musicians set to treat your ears and transport you to the Appalachian region of years long passed.

This compilation, From The Mountaintop, is another hallmark in traditional music. It is the outgrowth of an earlier collaboration when award-winning, classically trained cellist Dave Eggar came to Appalachia and recorded with one of its seminal figures, Dr. Ralph Stanley. Since then, Dave Eggar and Deoro (Eggar’s trio with Chuck Palmer and Tom Pirozzi) have returned and performed numerous times, becoming “kinfolk” to musicians like Noah Wall, Tyler Hughes, Jake Baine, and Tommy Norris. That pilgrimage, in 2010, began Dave Eggar’s journey home to Appalachia and her music.

This CD is a result of that crossing. Part of the Chesky Binaural + Series, all recorded with a single microphone, the band appears right before you with this spacious, lush and multi-dimensional recording. Now headphone users will hear the same three-dimensional sound and imaging as audiophiles have for the past 25 years with Chesky Recordings. Also these new Binaural+ Series albums capture even more spatial realism for the home audiophile market, bringing you one step closer to the actual event. You will hear some of the most natural and pure cool Folk music ever recorded. (more…)

The Allman Brothers Band – Brothers And Sisters (1973/2013) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

When the Allman Brothers Band’s fifth album, Brothers and Sisters, was released on Capricorn Records in August 1973, the legendary southern blues-rock group had already achieved world-wide fame with their 1971 live album, At Fillmore East. This success was followed by the tragic loss of their founder, leader and musical visionary, guitarist Duane Allman, who died in a motorcycle crash on October 29, 1971. While regrouping under the leadership of singer/organist Gregg Allman and guitarist/vocalist Dickey Betts, The Allman Brothers Band soldiered on with Brothers and Sisters, which turned out to be their most successful recording to date.

The original Fillmore East album is one of the finest live documents of the rock era, capturing the original line-up of one of the ’70s’ tightest outfits before they were cruelly robbed of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Taken from five 1971 performances at New York’s fabled Fillmore East, the extended and effortlessly melodic workouts of “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and “Whipping Post” still have the power to rivet and move.

On display here is the Allmans’ fabled chemistry at its finest. The band not only rocks, it rolls, swings, and stretches out in exploratory, jazzy passages. The dual guitar interplay of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts glides effortlessly over the propulsive rhythm section of Oakley and twin drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks, while Greg Allman’s powerful blues voice and melodic keyboard work provides the icing on the cake. Though the later-released The Fillmore Concerts presents these songs in their original entirety, “At Fillmore East”, with its seamless edits of multiple performances, may be the superior recording. It highlights all the glint and sparkle of what still ranks among the best jamming committed to record.

Herbie Hancock – Mwandishi – The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings (1994/2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

None can argue that Herbie Hancock’s Blue Note recordings are mostly jazz milestones, the somewhat overlooked Warner Bros. period remains one of his most creatively adventurous, and enduring. The three albums presented here all offer different sides of Hancock after he left Miles Davis. All are presented here in their entirety, with copious notes by Bob Blumenthal, who interviewed Hancock for the package. The set begins with the wildly joyous, deep, funky groove of Fat Albert’s Groove, the music Hancock recorded for Bill Cosby’s Saturday morning cartoon show. These seven tracks, with their three-horn front line (originated for Hancock on his final Blue Note album, Speak Like a Child) of Joe Henderson on flute and tenor, Johnny Coles’ trumpet, and Garnett Brown’s trombone, are singing, lyrical funk grooves that predated Headhunters by a few years and swung way harder by sticking back and lying in the groove as much as possible. Hancock’s electric piano teamed with Tootie Heath and Buster Williams to form an unbeatable, gutsy, and stomping rhythm section. The band was fleshed out on a couple of tracks by additional horns, additional drums and percussion, and electric guitars. After such a melodic entry, Warners’ executives must have been shocked when Hancock brought them the abstract funkified impressionism of his emerging Mwandishi band on its selftitled offering. Comprised of three long tracks, the album showcased Hancock’s use of free jazz and long intervallic inventions on modal frames. Only Buster Williams remained from the previous set. The rest of the sextet includes Billy Hart, Eddie Henderson, Julian Priester, and Bennie Maupin. also This same band with the addition of a few sidemen recorded the Crossings with the addition of synthesizer player Patrick Gleeson. This final record sank from the market like a stone; it found some success a year later, after Hancock had moved to Columbia, to issue Sextant and then Headhunters. Crossings melds street music, modal jazz and the expansive sonic approach of Sun Ra fom this same period; it’s approach keeps jazz close to the street while fully exploring the varying tonal and rhythmic changes that were going on post-Coltrane. Again, only three tracks appear, though the first is a long, brazen expressionistic suite (“Sleeping Giant”). The musical evolution present in this double set reveals the composer, arranger, and pianist as a large scale visionary.

Although it was the major label debut from the Avett Brothers, 2009’s “I And Love And You” was hardly the first album from the brothers. Their five previous independent releases impressed Rick Rubin so much he not only agreed to produce this record, he also signed them to his label. Named the 2009 artist to watch by Rolling Stone, the Avett Brothers helped resurrect the rootsy Americana movement.

The title of this reissue LP is a bit ironic for jazz was really struggling commercially in 1967 and the “hits” were few and far between. In fact flugelhornist Art Farmer, who leads the notable hard bop quintet (with Jimmy Heath on tenor, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Mickey Roker), would be moving to Europe the following year where he would work much more often than he had in the U.S. The ten numbers on this LP were fairly popular, particularly such tunes as “Song for My Father,” “The Sidewinder,” “Watermelon Man” and “Take Five.” The quintet’s concise interpretations (no performance is over six minutes) are melodic without being overly predictable. As usual Farmer’s lyricism by itself is a good reason to search for this underrated album.

Much as the current Allman Brothers lineup had coalesced in 2003, the ensemble that came together in 1989 for the twentieth anniversary box set Dreams (Polydor, 1989) tour had tightened considerably (minus keyboardist /vocalist Johnny Neel) by the time they decided to engage in their first extended run at New York’s Beacon Theatre and record themselves for a live album. Play All Night: Live At the Beacon Theatre consists of performances captured on March 10 & 11 in 1992 and over the course of its two discs, effectively supplants the concert pieces of that era captured on “An Evening With”.
