Gustav Mahler and the Munich Philharmonic share a very special connection. As a composer he sustainably linked the 19th-century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. His works have been a substantial part of the Munich Philharmonic’s core repertoire ever since and the orchestra has excelled on many occasions.

The Munich Philharmonic is opening up its vast archives, giving listeners the opportunity to enjoy one of the richest collections of recordings by legendary artists. On the centenary of Gustav Mahler’s death, Christian Thielemann conducted a concert programme with Mahler’s songs to poems from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” by Friedrich Rückert sung by the renowned Michael Volle, as well as the Adagio from Mahler’s unfinished Symphony No. 10. The live recording of this exact concert performance has been exclusively lifted from our orchestra’s historical archives and will be released on the MPHIL label for the very first time this spring.

The award-winning duo ensemble formed by Christian Tetzlaff and Lars Vogt are returning to the masterworks of European chamber music with this new album that includes Ludwig van Beethoven’s (1770-1827) three violin sonatas from Op. 30. The expressive and intimate chamber music recordings by the star duo have gathered numerous awards and their previous album also received an ECHO-Klassik award in 2017. Beethoven wrote his three Violin Sonatas, Op. 30 in 1801 and 1802. They are relatively early works but already pointing towards the direction of Beethoven’s revolutionary 3rd Symphony, “Eroica”, which was completed in 1803. Although the influence of Haydn is still visible, in these Sonatas Beethoven created movements in all the sonatas that are completely untypical and that had never existed before in this way. No wonder that these delightful works belong to the artists’ favourite works by the great composer.

“The Bach Violin Concertos are not only one of the Baroque period highlights, but are one of the foundations of the entire history of music”, writes Swedish violinist Christian Svarfvar on his new album of “Bach Re:Composed” by fellow Swede Johan Ullén. “It’s a whole world of beauty in sixty minutes. Then you may ask yourself: why recompose something that is already so perfect?”. The result is this brilliant album of re-composed Bach concertos, with a fearless and technically challenging stratospheric solo violin part contrasting with enriched cellos and basses. For those who loved Max Richter’s “Four Seasons”, “Infinite Bach” will be a wonderful discovery for them. Bach was forward looking and his influence has travelled the centuries, influencing jazz, rock and pop musicians as well as every classical composer who came after him.

Christian Senn, laBarocca & Ruben Jais – The Solo Cantatas for Bass (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Of Bach’s two known religious cantatas and 15 known profane cantatas, only two make use of bass in the vocal section: the famous 1727 BWV 82 Ich habe genug, which has been recycled for various different vocal soloists over the years, and Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen BWV 56 from 1726. In order to avoid putting out just another recording of these cantatas with the same programme as the dozens which have been recorded over nearly sixty years (by such artists as Hans Hotter, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Gérard Souzay, Gerhard Hüsch, Hermann Prey, John Shirley-Quirk, Bernard Kruysen, Philippe Huttenlocher, Max von Egmond, Siegfried Lorenz, Siegmund Nimsgern, Matthias Goerne, Thomas Quasthoff…), even though this new version is sung by Christian Senn, a little originality is needed. And that’s what we have here. In addition to the two hits mentioned above, we have the rare cantata BWV 158 Der Friede sei mit dir – we don’t know the exact date it was written, possibly Weimar around 1715, or perhaps only around 1730 in Leipzig. This piece is surely a re-working of an older, lost cantata. Some sources give it as the “cantata for bass and soprano” but in reality this is a serious error of observation: for sure, the aria which makes up the second movement is clearly marked Aria & Chorale, the chorale being restricted to the soprano register, but in reality it was to be sung by “one or several sopranos in the choir”, and certainly not for a solo voice. So it’s a cantata (unfinished or incomplete) for solo bass, and so this record is a kind of complete collection of Bach’s three cantatas for this vocal line-up.

During the eighteenth century the cello gradually emerged from the anonymity of the continuo group, and by the beginning of the Romantic era the instrument had become an indispensable tool for composers. Robert Schumann, who had himself taken cello lessons, was very fond of it, describing is as a ‘beautiful instrument’; and Johannes Brahms, who acquired considerable skill as a cellist, praised its ‘masculine, serious character’. It is therefore to be hoped that neither composer would object to Christian Poltéra’s sensitive adaptations of their works.
