Chesky Records takes pleasure in presenting a record that’s as sweet as a peach and dry as a martini. Sex Without Bodies is reminiscent of the post-swing, cafe society sound that belonged to stars like Peggy Lee and Chet Baker. Singer Kelly Flint uses her smoky, sultry vocal to explore a world of love, lust and venetian blinds. Composer/guitarist David Cantor writes his songs with the heart of a continental rogue’combining wit, insight and late-night cool. Together they are masters of fallen innocence. For Sex Without Bodies, they bring to Chesky a diverting ensemble including vibes, accordion, horns and a deliciously grinding stand-up acoustic bass.

Picking up where the enrapturing “River of January” left off, Dave Zinno Unisphere’s follow-up, “Stories Told,” further explores the wild and beautiful jungle of jazz, more specifically, the Brazilian/Latin tributary: electric, funky, passionate, and rhythmic. Zinno here is partnered with Unisphere co-founder Mike Tucker, Eric “Benny” Bloom, Tim Ray and drummer/percussionist Rafael Barata. The ensemble is supreme and ambitious, benefiting from having a recording under their collective belt and refinement of the Unisphere mission. The performance is a passionate ode to the band’s multicultural vision.

Dave Zinno and his Unisphere bandmates-Mike Tucker on tenor sax, Eric Benny Bloom on trumpet and flugelhorn, Leo Genovese on keyboards, Tim Ray on piano, Rafael Barata, drums and percussion, and special guest Rafael Rocha on trombone-have been writing and practicing, biding their time until jazz scene reopened. In that time, Unisphere took advantage and managed to piece together, Fetish, a brilliant and beautiful album. The colorful panorama, tonal palette, and sonic breadth featured on Fetish are breathtaking. Zinno’s Unisphere is jubilant, rapturous, and free. Everyone contributed compositions or arrangements to the project, which creates a stunning picture of the diversity represented by this group. Fetish is the sound of that catharsis, that anticipation, a primal release of aural energy. “This project is the culmination of a year without live music,” says Zinno. “Every ounce of energy and ambition, in reserve from not expending it for so long, is on this record. I hope people feel what we felt while creating it.”

Dave Vettraino – Exercise (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

‘Exercise’ opens with a deep breath of a drone, cracking the seal of a window as you take in the day’s first breeze. As the diaphragm of the drone rises and falls, the first of many lasting guitar structures on ‘Exercise’ cycles around a chiming piano. The piano motif embodies the nature of Vettraino’s process making ‘Exercise’; played and recorded during an idle moment at Jamdek Studios, it’s these usually inconsequential minutes, not redeemable for much more than a dead-eyed stare, that Vettraino has threaded into a cohesive musical drift. ‘Morning Music’ is a term I’ve heard Dave use dozens of times over the years; both to describe his A.M. listening routines of John Fahey, North Americans, Alice Coltrane, and Natural Information Society, but also how he described his vision for this set of recordings at least a year before he began to write and record ‘Exercise’ in September 2018. More than matching the music to a particular time of day, which he admits he strayed away from as the record went on, he said the project was “figuring out how to make harmonically still or droney music without overdeveloping it”. Recorded over three separate periods before finishing this April amongst a predictable void of sessions, Vettraino chose ‘Exercise’ as a literal title and a jab at himself, showing the calm and humility central to his character.

In the Icelandic language there are 46 words for snow. In English we have just one. So imagine inventing words for perceived gaps in our language, for emotions we didn’t even know we had. That’s what John Koenig created in his The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, and Dave Storey has selected one of these words, Jouska, to name his album. In the Dictionary jouska is a “hypothetical conversation that you compulsively play out in your head”. Unpick this a bit and you get a feeling of paranoia, of the unsaid and unresolved. And how that idea contrasts with this album, where there is a sense of effortless empathy from the very first note, and the conversation is real.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/48 kHz | Time – 01:26:12 minutes | 1,05 GB | Genre: Blues
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Delmark

A first-tier blues and jazz guitarist, Dave Specter, whether working solo as a bandleader or as a sideman for artists like Johnny Littlejohn or Son Seals, has always brought intelligence and sharp, crisp playing to the music table, a sort of contemporary version of T-Bone Walker. Born on Chicago’s northwest side on May 21, 1963, Specter didn’t pick up the guitar until he was 18 years old, but once he did, he never looked back. Early on he worked as a support player for Littlejohn, Seals, and the Legendary Blues Band before starting his own group, the Bluebirds, in 1989. Signing with Delmark Records, he released a debut album, Bluebird Blues, on the imprint in 1991, featuring vocals by Barkin’ Bill Smith (Specter is not a vocalist), following it with Blueplicity (this time with vocals from harmonica player Tad Robinson) in 1994 and Live in Europe (again featuring vocalist Robinson) in 1995. Lynwood Slim handled vocals for 1996’s Left Turn on Blue (which featured legendary jazz organist Brother Jack McDuff on the Hammond B-3), with Lenny Lynn taking over vocal duties on 1998’s Blues Spoken Here. For 2000’s Speculatin’, Specter abandoned having a singer at all, issuing 13 instrumental tracks. Vocalist or not, Specter’s guitar playing can more than carry a song or a gig, or even an album, and respect for his playing had become universal in the blues community, even as he has moved further into jazz territory. Is What Is appeared in 2004, followed by Live in Chicago (a DVD of the same show was also issued) in 2008, all on the Delmark imprint. For 2014’s Message in Blue, which featured Otis Clay, Brother John Kattke, and Bob Corritore, Specter mixed guest vocal tracks in with instrumental tracks, all with his signature, swinging guitar style. – Steve Leggett

disappear was born of something that ceased to be, suddenly, unexpectedly, painfully. like two mirrors that reflected too strongly and burst. the shards that were left tell a story. of a trance meeting of an insect and a flower in a self-made paradise and the resulting journey that took them towards new dimensions but was brutally cut short before these could be explored. the sun disappeared. the resulting daze looked back and saw… mirrors don’t reflect what we want to see.

“His ‘n’ Hers” affectionately pits Mr and Mrs O’Higgins against each other as in the movie, Mr & Mrs Smith… In reality, this is a swinging “tough tenors” band in the good humoured tradition of the great Johnny Griffin – Eddie Lockjaw Davis group, who made nine albums together between 1960 and 1962. But what Griffin and Davis did together was not a competition, however apparently combative. It was collaboration, mutual inspiration, and special because of both the similarity and contrast of the two protagonists.
