The Fifth Symphony was finished in 1808, although its composition had occupied Beethoven’s attention for many years before. At its first performance, at Vienna, it was numbered on the program as the Sixth ; and the Pastoral appeared as the Fifth. Both were finished in the same year, but the priority of the C minor is clearly established by Beethoven’s own numbering in the autograph. The C minor Symphony is probably the best known and most admired of the nine, perhaps because it is the most human in its qualities. Beethoven himself has left us a clue to its meaning, namely, that it pictures the struggle of the individual with Fate, the alternations of hope and despair, and the final triumph. In speaking of the first four notes of the opening movement, Beethoven said, some time after he had finished the symphony : “So pocht das Schicksal an die Pforte” (“Thus Fate knocks at the door”). In the Fifth, as in the Third Symphony, we find that concentration of the thought and labor which makes these two musical poems so all-powerful and overwhelming in their effect. It is not marked by a spontaneous flow of musical phrases lightly strung together, or by mere toying with musical forms; but each motive represents a concentrated essence of thought which, once heard, makes an indelible impression, and apparently admits of no change. We give only a few quotations, but bearing them in mind, the listener will be able to follow the development of this passionate outpouring of a passionate mind while brooding over its fate…quote from musicwithease.com

One of Rachmaninoff’s most popular pieces, the Second Symphony is an indulgently melancholic and sentimental work: a magic box of the late-Romantic orchestra. Dramatic sections played by the full orchestra contrast heart-breaking swells that only this composer could have written. The LSO has a long history with the Second Symphony, recording it many times with conductors such as André Previn, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Valery Gergiev. For this recording, which was captured during the opening of the London Symphony Orchestra’s 2019/20 season at the Barbican Hall, Sir Simon Rattle conducted from memory, performing the uncut version of this symphonic treasure.

Three of Mozart’s wind concertos are included: the Oboe Concerto (K314) with soloist Olivier Stankiewicz, the Clarinet Concerto (K622) performed by former LSO Principal Andrew Marriner, and the Horn Concerto No 2 (K417) played by Timothy Jones.

Complementing these works is a performance of the beautiful Sinfonia Concertante (K297b), in which oboist Juliana Koch, clarinettist Chris Richards, and bassoonist Rachel Gough join Timothy Jones in the solo roles.

Also included is a recording of Mozart’s popular Serenade No 10, ‘Gran Partita’, performed by the LSO Wind Ensemble.

LSO Live is dedicated to making exciting recordings that have the power to reach and inspire new audiences. Since its launch in 2000, it has become one of the world’s most talked-about classical labels and the leader among the new breed of orchestra-own-labels.

Weber’s eerily fantastical Der Freischütz is heralded as one of the cornerstones of Romantic opera, being the first in operatic history to draw on traditional German folk tunes and elements of Romanticism. The evocative and colourful orchestration of the ‘Wolf’s Glen’ scene, the most gruesomely expressive rendering of evil ever found in a musical score, is particularly impressive. Much of the music is instantly familiar: several of the melodies have been adapted as hymn tunes, and the Overture regularly appears in the concert hall.

No worldly commotion is heard in Heaven! All live in gentlest peace’. Such is the child-like innocence which permeates Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, and yet beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye: an undercurrent of mysticism; a momentary glimpse behind the curtain at something timeless and unsettling. Star Russian soprano Sofia Fomina joins the London Philharmonic Orchestra and its Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski in this performance of Mahler’s beguiling Symphony, recorded live at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.

‘This music is absolutely ideally placed to Jurowski’s strengths: his precision and ability to inspire playing of the greatest delicacy, pointing, accuracy and warmth is exactly what’s called for in this score’ Bachtrack.com, September 2012. This release marks the 29th on the LPO label conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, and is the first Jurowski-conducted Richard Strauss release to date. The performances of the three works on this release were also critically well received, with the soloists within the Orchestra noted for their ‘poise’ and ‘exquisite handling’ of Die Frau ohne Schatten and Jurowski’s ‘perfect blending of rich textures’ in Eine Alpensinfonie (The Arts Desk). Vladimir Jurowski has a strong affinity with Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow), and chose to conduct a selection of orchestral highlights from the opera rather than the composer’s own published Fantasie. He went on to conduct the complete opera at the Metropolitan Opera in 2013. ‘If the evening can boast a hero, the honour must go to Vladimir Jurowski, who conducts with abiding passion, sensitivity and propulsion.’ (The Financial Times). The Dance of the Seven Veils was performed as part of the opening concert of the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s critically acclaimed The Rest is Noise festival of music which shaped the twentieth century. ‘Jurowski and the LPO set the scene with an outstandingly delicate performance of the Dance of the Seven Veils’ (The Financial Times). These discs join the previously released recordings of Richard Strauss’s Don Juan and Ein Heldenleben, conducted by Bernard Haitink (LPO-0079); performances which were highly praised at the time. Gramophone magazine said ‘[it] gives any account in the catalogue a run for its money in terms of sheer élan, and bristles with energy’.

Mozart was a master at capturing the spirits of the instruments for which he wrote, perfectly exemplified here in the lighter-than-air Flute Concerto No. 2, the sprightly and playful Bassoon Concerto and in the interplay of the four soloists in the Sinfonia concertante. These three exceptional works come to life in this studio recording with soloists of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal conductor Vladimir Jurowski.

Finnish conductor Paavo Berglund, who passed away in January 2012, was one of the last remaining conductors with a direct personal connection to Sibelius. With the Second and Seventh Symphonies already released on the LPO Label, Berglund’s Sibelius legacy is further cemented in these live concert recordings with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, in which he vividly captures the natural flight of the Fifth Symphony and the freefall journey of the Sixth.

The affinity Berglund felt with the music of Jean Sibelius went beyond shared nationality and personal acquaintance. Berglund revealed a rare physicality in Sibelius’s scores. It was there in his three recorded symphony cycles, but in these late London performances it emerged in a different, darker light. Berglund wasn’t as meticulous about observing marked tempi as some of his younger compatriots are. Instead he was impulsive, rugged and heartfelt. But his instincts always seemed to serve the musical architecture, the curious symphonic meta-flow unique to Sibelius. His death in January 2012 was talked of as a goodbye to one of the last conductors of the ‘old school’.

London Philharmonic Orchestra, Nick Palmer – Rosner: Orchestral Music, Vol. 3 (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

The musical language of the New York-based Arnold Rosner (19452013) had its roots in the modal harmony and rhythm of pre-Baroque polyphony and evolved in an array of unusual directions, producing a style that is instantly recognizable and immediately appealing as can be heard in the three works on this recording. Rosners Nocturne suggests the immensity and the implacable violence of outer space, whereas his overture Tempus Perfectum has its starting point in Renaissance dance. The monumental Sixth Symphony opens with music of volcanic ferocity and vehemence; the central Adagio then provides an island of troubled calm before the dignified opening of the finale presages a symphonic Allegro of wild, freewheeling energy; only when its immense force is spent does this powerful masterpiece sink to an uneasy close.
