He may be remembered as one of the ‘Mighty Handful’ of Russian composers, but Alexander Borodin was a surgeon and chemist by profession. Having spent time in a military hospital, made significant contributions to the discipline of chemistry, and founded the Saint Petersburg School of Medicine for Women, Borodin was a busy and influential figure in the scientific community of the day. You could assume that he would enjoy nothing more taxing than a nice walk or good book in his downtime, but he was busy crafting some of the most recognisable melodies of the period, including the Nocturne from his second string quartet, the Overture and Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor, and In the Steppes of Central Asia, all of which feature on this excellent compilation of some of his most important works.

Johann Sebastian Bach is commonly understood as the starting point of the violin repertoire. But there was unaccompanied violin music before him, too – and it is truly exciting! The renowned baroque violinist Nadja Zwiener presents this music with her solo debut album on Genuin. Her inspired recording shows that Bach was able to build his repertoire on a great foundation: Composers such as Johann Georg Pisendel, Johann Westhoff, and even Arcangelo Corelli and Giuseppe Torelli wrote highly challenging works for the incredibly versatile instrument. The concertmistress of the English Concert and the Gaechinger Cantorey takes us on a fascinating journey.

The young American soprano Nadine Sierra, winner of top prizes like the Beverly Sills Artists Award, has won wide attention for her singing in bel canto roles. For her debut album, however, she has chosen not Italian repertory but accessible contemporary material, most of it in English. It might seem an odd fit with her stated goal: “Opera belongs to everybody, no matter what age, no matter what race, no matter what kind of money you make or don’t make. It will speak to you because it is a reflection of humanity.” Much of the material on the album is not opera at all, but musical theater or orchestral songs. However, it emerges that there’s a method behind Sierra’s selections: almost without exception (the exception is No Word from Tom, from Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, which is placed at the end, seems to come out of nowhere, and just sounds bizarre), the music fits Sierra’s voice. She’s got a big, distinctive sound, with a muscular high end in which vibrato ripples powerfully and quickly. Once you hear it, you don’t forget it, and this is the source of the excitement surrounding this young singer. Sample one of the pieces by Villa-Lobos, which almost seem tailor-made for Sierra. Composer Ricky Ian Gordon’s straightforward poetry settings also favor Sierra’s voice. What she doesn’t have at the moment is a great deal of range: Bernstein’s calculatedly sentimental Take Care of This House and jocular Glitter and Be Gay come out sounding rather similar, and the farther she gets from her high sweet spot the less confident she sounds. It’s certainly enough to whet the appetite for the voice’s future development, however. Sierra is ably backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Robert Spano, who deserve more than the very small print they get in Deutsche Grammophon’s album graphics.

Kitchen Sink follows up Shah’s Hyundai Mercury Prize nominated 2017 album Holiday Destination.

With the same ferocious determination and distinct voice Shah now turns her sights closer to home with an album that explores her own story as a woman in her 30’s and the societal pressures and expectations that come with that. Jovial and playful at times, unblinkingly daring at others – Kitchen Sink is bursting with Shah’s beloved personality while simultaneously refusing to compromise on the social commentary that she continues to deliver so fearlessly. Once again produced by Shah’s long time collaborator Ben HillIer.

Nadia Shpachenko’s latest Reference Recordings release The Poetry of Places features World Premiere recordings of works for solo piano, for two pianos, percussion, electronics, voice, and toy piano in a fascinating mélange inspired by great architecture and places. The eight compositions monumentalize places as wildly diverse as the Copland House in Cortlandt, NY, The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Louis Kahn’s National Assembly Buildings in Bangladesh, Newgrange Ancient Temple in Ireland, and Frank Gehry’s House in Santa Monica, CA. Included is a significant new work from Andrew Norman, Frank’s House, for two pianos and percussion, and another large work from Nina C. Young, Kolokol, for two pianos and electronics (a ‘fantasy’ inspired by Russian Orthodox Church Bells). Additionally, six solo works were written specifically for this project by Amy Beth Kirsten, Hannah Lash, James Matheson, Harold Meltzer, Lewis Spratlan, and Jack Van Zandt. The composers use very different musical approaches and sonic techniques in response to their chosen spaces.

“Since I was a little girl, Mozart has always been by my side. His music is my happy place, whether I’m listening to it, playing it, or whistling it. And since the start of the pandemic, Mozart has been a permanent fixture in my home. His joyful, melodic music has given me a way to escape all the worry and anxiety, helping me connect with something deeper and live in the present moment.

That’s how this new project was born. The desire to express myself and share some love and hope with the world grew stronger than my feelings of anxiety about the future. This music is my way of sharing a little tenderness, hope, and joy with you. May it bring you the same happiness and peace of mind that it has brought to me. Enjoy!” (Nadia Labrie)

Conceiving her debut album, vocalist Naama Gheber summoned inspiration from an intimate life on the New York bandstand. Among tapering red curtains, maple bar tops, snares and brushes, the Be’er Sheva-born artist nightly explored selections from the canon of American standards with her fellow artists – music that would become the centerpiece for Dearly Beloved. As tracks materialized one by one, she observed a lyrical theme emerging, one that presents triumphs, challenges and ultimately changes within the human condition reflected in relationships with others.
