To anticipate it immediately: Roods are not possibly a victim of an unsuccessful orthography more known “roots”, but the English name for Tuchellen which were used in England before the industrial revolution by weavers and tailors for measuring of materials and tapes. Reeds (web combs) are also even today a central component of looms again. Behind the pseudonym Roods & Reeds are hidden the inhabitant of Hamburg Dagmar Lauschke and her partner Leonard Poppe, (both songs and guitar) which have made a mistake since 2016 of the common interpretation of demanding folk sounds of Anglo-Irish origin. Suitably to his tape name the Hamburg duet has entitled to his debut album “The Loom Goes Click” and refers with it not only to the rhythm of a clattering loom, but, besides, to the harmoniously grooving and ingeniously intertwined guitar melodies and voices which are tuned tonally magnificently on each other. Besides, the rhythmically stressed numbers harmonise on this album in perfect manner with the beguiling, melancholy infected ballads.

Ronnie Earl’s Maxwell Street is named in honour of blues pianist and previous member of the Broadcasters David Maxwell and is a nod to Chicago’s Maxwell Street where blues musicians gathered to play outside for the Sunday market crowds. It confirms Ronnie Earl’s status as one of the most soulful blues/soul/jazz guitarists working today. Earl is a three-time Blues Award winner as Guitarist Of The Year working with his band of over 25 years. This album is dedicated to my big brother David Maxwell. We were born on the same day ten years apart. His playing was a deep as the ocean, as high as the sky and as bright as a quasar. When he passed I felt a huge loss as I still do. David was a Broadcaster and he and I made a few records together. It was always a supreme honor to play with him. He played blues as well as jazz with incredible expression from Otis Spann to Cecil Taylor. He knew and loved it all. He became Otis Spann in the later years. Our pianist David Limina wrote a tune that captures the feeling of the album and we all send our love and respect to David’s family and all of our love and gratitude for David Maxwell.

The strings vibrate gently. Accurate tone, unconditionally clear. And quietly. The longest fingers of jazz seem to dance weightlessly along the wooden bridge; yearning, filigree and elegant. No one else sounds like Ron Carter. His double bass often produces a crisp groove like an electric bass, yet it is always clearly definable as the sound of a classical music instrument. Then the sound under the scorpion-like hands irresistibly swells. Payton Crossley gently caresses the cymbal, and Jimmy Green, the ”new member” on the tenor saxophone as well as pianist Renee Rosnes push the chorus onto the finely crocheted rhythm cover. ”With us, nobody knows exactly what happens when,” Carter praised the Foursight Quartet’s unique selling point. ”This is precisely why every concert is a real challenge. We almost always play 35 to 40 minutes without a stop at the beginning. No breaks, just slight changes that show the beginning of a new song. If we were a classical music band, it would be called a symphony with five movements. This kind of thing only works with this band!”

Performed in 2015 as part of the Barbican’s inaugural Sound Unbound festival, The Soldier’s Tale was recorded in the Jerwood Hall of LSO St. Luke’s, a vibrant venue which is also home to the Orchestra’s community and music education programme. Directed by violinist Roman Simovic, the ensemble for this project featured veteran principal players from across the Orchestra, including bassoonist Rachel Gough, clarinetist Andrew Marriner, percussionist Neil Percy and trumpet player Philip Cobb.

The brilliant Hope Downs from 2018, carried by wonderfully fluid melodies, had made Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever THE Australian combo everyone was talking about. This Melbourne quintet led by the trio of singer-guitarists Joe White, his cousin Fran Keaney and Tom Russo didn’t reinvent the wheel but excelled in slightly punk-tinged indie pop, carried by those clear guitars so cherished by The Byrds and R. E.M. from the IRS Records period, and especially their older compatriots Go-Betweens and Triffids that RBCF seem to worship… With Sideways to New Italy, the Australians drive in this melodic nail by enriching their “100% aussie indie” vision. RBCF’s passion for 80’s pop is noticeable, like on The Only One with its Orange Juice-inspired tunes and on Sunglasses at the Wedding with its Belle & Sebastian influences. There are traces of The Feelies too. It’s a real bubble bath for the ears of the fans of this era. But in spite of all these many exemplified and dated references, there’s nothing outdated about the modern and addictive rock’n’roll of a band that brilliantly does something new with the old and reminds us that a good composition doesn’t need any artifice to become an instant classic.
