A Czech maestro in his element: the complete Philips and Deutsche Grammophon albums of Karel Ancerl collected as a single edition to mark the 50th anniversary of his death (3 July 1973). Karel Ancerl made most of his recordings behind the Iron Curtain for the Supraphon label, as chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic between 1950 and 1968. However, as the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra began to tour abroad, Ancerl’s own reputation rose with them, and he accepted invitations to lead orchestras across Europe and the US.

The car windows are down, the air is warm, and the possibilities are boundless. On Cut Worms, the new self-titled album from Brooklyn-based Max Clarke, the singer-songwriter and musician continues his exploration of what he calls “pop essentialism”. Mining the golden hits of yesteryear for a timeless double A-side sound, he contemplates age-old questions through a modern lens. Here, he leaves behind the legendary studio and sought-after producers for a more homegrown approach, working with a cast of gifted friends and collaborators. The result is a compact collection of daydream anthems that live between the summer’s hopeful beginnings and the season’s fleeting end. As opposed to recording the entire album in one chunk at one studio, Clarke varied his methods. Three of the songs were cut from start to finish in his shared rehearsal space. “Don’t Fade Out” and Living Inside” were recorded in Brooklyn by Brian and Michael D’Addario of the Lemon Twigs, who also played piano and bass, respectively, on these two songs. Further basic tracking was done by Rick Spataro (of indie folk band Florist) at his Hudson Valley studio, Onlyness Analog, with contributions from the long standing Cut Worms live band–keyboardist John Andrews, bassist Keven Louis Lareau, and drummer Noah Bond (who played on all three sessions).

“My younger brother died at birth and I never had a chance to meet him. Growing up he was my ghost friend, someone told me he lived in the stars which I accepted. I had not paid attention to him for many years but when I was making “Remember Rainbow Bridge” and waiting for my son to come into the world he suddenly appeared again. I partly dedicated Remember Rainbow Bridge to him, but I knew that it wasn’t his record, so I thought I should make one just for him and here it is; “A Part of You in Everything”, 8 songs about being human on Earth. I think it’s music which is best listened to at night out under the stars. Thank you to all my friends who helped making it!”

The musicians were brought together by education – they both studied in Kraków and Paris. The band assumed the name Cracow Duo over ten years ago. Since then they have been acclaimed by audiences and critics from Poland and abroad. Their collaboration began in 2001 with work on Frederic Chopin’s Sonata in G minor, Op. 65, and since then they have built a broad repertoire.

Vivaldi’s work is extraordinarily profuse, and from his “extraordinary fury of composition” resulted a collection of 12 concertos, preserved in Paris since then, genuine jewels of Vivaldian music! However, for whom were they composed? The French Ambassador in Venice, Jacques-Vincent Languet, who made numerous commissions to Vivaldi in the 1720s? Perhaps as a magnificent gift to a visiting French music lover… Or perhaps François-Etienne, Duke of Lorraine and Bar? A fine music lover and musician, who in 1745 became Emperor Francis I of Austria, gave early protection to Vivaldi, who introduced himself in 1731 as “maestro di cappella di S.A.R. il Serenissimo Sig. Duca di Lorena”. The Paris Concertos would then have passed through the Luneville Court, which was very musical? The mystery is there, but these works influenced Parisian musical life. Stefan Plewniak’s raging violin gives them back their full glory in this virtuoso interpretation by the Orchestre de l’Opera Royal de Versailles!

Clark recruits none other than Thom Yorke as Exec Producer for his first album centred on his own singing.

It combines his trademark searing synth melodies and beats with vocal hooks. Thom says “the way he approached it all wasn’t the usual singer songwriter guff thank god; it mirrored the way he approached all his composition and recording, but this time it had a human face. His face.”

Chris says “I kept on thinking what would it sound like if The Beach Boys took MDMA and made a rave record”.

Chuck Johnson is a composer, producer, and musician residing in Oakland, California. He approaches his work with an ear towards finding faults and instabilities that might reveal latent beauty, with a focus on pedal steel guitar, experimental electronics, alternate tuning systems, and composing for film and television.

JWPATON is a Yuin musician based in Western Sydney. He uses alternative sounds and field recordings from both the natural and the human-made worlds to create rich, thick, time-stretched padded ambience.

Tangled mirror yarn was composed in response to Sol LeWitt’s ‘Wall drawing #955, Loopy Doopy (red and purple)’ (2000), installed in the John Kaldor Family Hall at the Art Gallery of NSW, as an enhanced audio reading of LeWitt’s work.

In the Meantime is the third and final solo studio album by the British Fleetwood Mac vocalist and keyboardist Christine McVie, released in 2004 on Koch Records and Sanctuary Records Group. It was McVie’s first solo recording since 1984, and the first since her departure from Fleetwood Mac.

All of the songs on the album were composed by McVie and/or her nephew Dan Perfect, with contributions from ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist Billy Burnette; Robbie Patton, who co-wrote Fleetwood Mac’s 1982 hit “Hold Me” with McVie; George Hawkins, ex-member of Mick Fleetwood’s Zoo in the mid-1980s, and McVie’s ex-husband Eddy Quintela.

Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890–1974) wrote across all genres but is known for his works for an unusual instrument. Where his 1944 work, Petite symphonie concertante, uses the instrument in conjunction with harp and piano, his 1951–1952 work, Concerto for harpsichord and small orchestra, takes the instrument and pits it against a small orchestra. The instrument in question is the harpsichord. However, this is not the harpsichord of the 17th and 18th centuries, which died and vanished in the 19th century, but the new revival harpsichord of the 20th century.
