Forget This Night explores impermanence and desire through songs by Lili Boulanger, Karol Szymanowski, and Grażyna Bacewicz. The heart of the program is Clairières dans le ciel, Lili Boulanger’s only song cycle and an overlooked masterpiece of the genre, which maps the interior emotional landscape of someone deeply in love—from blissful awe to the devastation of abandonment. The cycle is framed by songs of Szymanowski (a contemporary of Boulanger who was also writing music of simmering passion across the continent against the backdrop of the First World War) and Bacewicz, of a generation later, who treats the same themes in songs of fresh directness and aching lyricism.
Opening with Boulanger’s first extant song, Attente, and ending with the premiere recording of a fragment for solo voice she wrote at the very end of her life, Forget This Night poses a universal human question: how wholeheartedly can we open ourselves to relationships, and moments, that will inevitably end?

“I didn’t realise that the indescribable – the sadness, pain and anger of losing a child or loved one – could be described so precisely in music and song.” -David Grossman- “Requiem: Falling Out Of Time” is loosely based on David Grossman’s book “Out of Time Falling”, which has been translated into more than 30 languages. The work is dedicated to Grossman’s son Uri, who died in the Lebanon war in 2006. The Cossee publisher and composer Christoph Buchwald, who knew Uri well, wrote the requiem, consisting of 22 songs and 2 instrumental pieces. “Because I couldn’t find any reliable words to express this misery to David and Michal Grossman or to myself. It was only possible with and through the music.” The 24 pieces were written over 7 years and Buchwald, who studied film music, plays organ, harpsichord, 6- and 12-string guitar, bass and sings. Piano, percussion, saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn, strings, choir and soprano were recorded with guest musicians in the Zeeland Concert Hall, famous for its acoustics.
