This is one of the last sessions by Walter Bishop, Jr. prior to his death in 1998. The veteran bop pianist is in great form on this trio date with bassist Paul Brown and drummer Al Harewood, which mixes standards, bop classics, and several originals. Bishop’s jaunty approach to ‘Yardbird Suite’ is a gem, while his lush treatment of ‘The Masquerade Is Over’ finds the rhythm section staying softly in the background. He revisits ‘Speak Low,’ a centerpiece of his first date as a leader some 32 years earlier, playfully detouring into Billy Strayhorn’s ‘Rain Check’ and leaving room for a few drum breaks by Harewood. His ‘Valley Land’ is an intense mid-tempo samba, while ‘Keiko’s Samba’ kicks into a higher gear. This Japanese SACD on the Venus label is worth seeking. (more…)

Lavinia Meijer – Visions (2010) [2.0 & 5.1] SACD ISO

SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz  | 01:02:29 minutes | 3,08 GB | Genre: Classical | © Channel Classics Records

Lavinia Meijer is recognized worldwide as one of the most successful rising stars of the harp. In October 2009 Meijer received the “Nederlandse Muziekprijs” at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw by the Minister of Culture. This Dutch Music Prize, a state prize, is the highest award a classical musician can obtain in The Netherlands. Besides performing the standard harp repertoire Lavinia Meijer is very keen on playing modern music. She is also interested in experiments with electronic music, theatrical performances and jazz. She has inspired several composers to write new compositions for the harp in all possible combinations, not only the violin also a saxophone quartet and even a rock band.

‘Visions’ presents a varied picture of recent repertoire from the last forty years and includes Britten’s haunting Suite, and Paul Patterson’s incredible pictorial pieces “Spiders” and “Bugs”. Lavinia Meijer’s performance of Garret Byrnes’ “Visions of Twilight” will surely become the benchmark recording of a work which has become one of the most performed works for harp ever since it’s premier in 2000.

In the booklet notes Lavinia Meijer writes:

I am sometimes asked to name my favourite stylistic period. It doesn’t matter to me, as long as we’re talking about good compositions and I can give them my own personal interpretation. It’s true that even as a young performer I discovered that I had an affinity for modern music. I am particularly interested by the technical and interpretative possibilities. It gives the performer a sense of freedom. I also enjoy the challenge of making modern music, which is experienced by so many people as “difficult”, into something not only approachable but exciting. Personal contact with the composer is a priceless advantage here. I would never have been able perform the works which were written specially for me by Garret Byrnes, Carlos Michans, and Jacob TV (Jacob ter Veldhuis) with such conviction if the composers hadn’t been around. Genre: Rock

Hurriganes was a hugely popular Finnish rock & roll band formed in 1971. Their music was a belated take on classic rock & roll, and the band was equally adept at writing their own modern classics as they were covering supercharged versions of songs by Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, or the J. Geils Band.

Hurriganes revitalized the Finnish rock music scene, particularly with their second album, 1974’s Roadrunner. The album, named after the Bo Diddley song, demolished the charts and is not only considered one of the best classic rock & roll albums in Finland, but it was also the best-selling album in its native land from 1974 to 1985. The single release of the song they added as a lark to the album when it came up too short, “Get On,” has been named numerous times as the finest single rock & roll song released in Finland by both the public and the press. Järvinen took the intro from Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” and added a ferocious lead throughout the three-and-a-half-minute song, Aaltonen punched it up with a revved-up beat and nonsense lyrics that touched upon most of the rock & roll clichés of the past, and Häkkinen solidified the mixture with his sturdy basslines… Roadrunner is regarded as one of the best Finnish rock records ever released, and in 2007, it was re-released as a SACD mixed to a 5.1 format. Hugh Masekela – Hope (1994) [Analogue Productions Remaster 2008] {PS3 ISO + FLAC}

Now happily resettled in South Africa, Masekela assembled a seven-piece group there and recorded an informal guided tour of his life and repertoire live in Washington D.C.’s Blues Alley. The songs stretch over a period of nearly five decades and several countries and composers — from an incantatory Alexandria township tune, “Languta,” which he learned in 1947, to a fairly ordinary piece written by keyboardist Themba Mkhize in 1993, “Until When.” “Abangoma” starts the CD out on the right track, hearkening back to the early fusion of African music and jazz that Masekela was playing back in 1966. “Mandela (Bring Him Back Home)” may have lost some of its political raison d’etre by 1993, but it remains a good tune, and the band plays it with enthusiasm. Yet Masekela’s biggest hit, “Grazing in the Grass,” sounds a bit tired in this live rendition. There are two songs by the prolific South African composer Caiphus Semenya, “Nomali” and the driving “Ha Le Se,” and the late Nigerian idol Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is represented by “Lady.” Clearly the resolution of the political struggle in South Africa had mellowed Masekela; he sounds happier, perhaps less fiery, certainly more polished and refined on the trumpet and flugelhorn than when he started out. But when you hear his bitter narration on “Stimela,” describing the life of formerly conscripted coal miners, you suspect that not all of the old wounds have healed. (more…)

Genre: Jazz

Hiroshima, a group whose music falls between R&B, pop, world music, and jazz, has long had its own niche. The band integrates traditional Japanese instruments into their musical blend and has generally been both commercial and creative within its genre.

Few bands have so artfully and appealingly blended pop, R&B, jazz and world music over the past few decades as this East L.A.-bred ensemble, Hiroshima, which enters the new millennium with a set that draws on everything from old-school soul to Les McCann to the Japanese traditions so dear to its heart. Heads Up will no doubt market this as a smooth jazz project, but only a few tracks are middle of the road enough to truly qualify. The best of these, the lilting and inspirational “Believe,” balances Terry Steele’s seductive soul vocals with the exotic touches of bandleader Dan Kuramoto’s breathy alto flute and June Kuramoto’s trademark koto. “Another Wish” also captures the dreamy side of their artistry. That’s part of the secret of Hiroshima’s success; even at their mellowest, there’s still a feast for globally attuned ears. Then when they go funky, as on the horn driven “Shaka Phonk,” there are always June’s glistening strings floating beyond the groove. The disc begins with a tune (“Eternal Phoenix”) that offers a colorful hodgepodge of all their best elements, from ancient chimes and flutes to hypnotic percussion, modern grooving and distant, crunchy fusion guitars. The band has gone through various female lead vocalists but does even better with Terry Steele, who creates appealing updates of classic Isley Brothers and George Benson tunes. (more…)

A pair of 70s albums from Hugo Montenegro – back to back on a single CD! Rocket Man is excellent – very groovy stuff! After paying tribute to Stevie Wonder and Bob Dylan on other LPs, Hugo Montenegro turns his talents to the groovy compositions of Elton John in this nice album of moogy instrumentals – a set that’s got some upbeat material that almost hits a funky club style – graced with loads of work on Arp by John Montenegro! The tune are all big ones by Elton, mostly – and the presentation here is pretty cool, with a very different vibe than the big hits. There’s also a few solos by trumpeters Chuck Findley and Gary Barone – and titles include “Rocket Man”, “Bitch Is Back”, “Daniel”, “Take Me To The Pilot”, “Philadelphia Freedom”, and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” – plus the originals “Splashdown” and “Blastoff”, which bracket the album in a “rocket” theme. Mammy Blue is funky moogy material from Hugo Montenegro, recorded during the time when he was making the shift from crime jazz and vocal themes to more electronic stuff with a 70s groove! The record’s got some very nice Arp on it in parts, and even though the tracks are mostly pop ones, they’re given the usual Montenegro twist, and have a nice nutty edge. Titles include “Peace Train”, “Zingaro”, “Movin On”, “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey”, “Superstar”, and “I Feel The Earth Move”.

Next Move is the 11th album in a career that took off after Hue and Cry, the stage name of brothers Pat Kane and Greg Kane, opened for Madonna in 1986. Since then, they have done quite well, sitting at the U.K. Top of the Charts on more than one occasion. The album combines elements of jazz, rock, and pop. To better assess the performance, the album should be broken up into two categories, the music and the words, which rarely come together here, at least in the way generally represented in jazz vocalizing. Hubert Sumlin was a brilliant guitarist who was a Howlin’ Wolf sideman and a vast influence on Eric Clapton and Peter Green amongst others. This killer album started with a five-week tour of Europe with these musicians before they hit the UK. There was a lot of songwriting in hotel rooms which paid off handsomely. Here are 5 brand new songs from Hubert, a couple of well thought-out instrumentals and Hubert playing his usual imaginative lead guitar on 3 new songs by Richard Studholme. Musically, it’s all tough blues but within that there is tremendous variation ranging from some nice modern touches to a couple of Jimmy Reedish tracks with just two guitars and drums. Altogether a superb team effort and a real revelation.

Tenorist Harry Allen serves up a great French lullaby of his own – crafted together from the work of famous Parisian songwriters like Michel Legrand, Charles Trenet, and others – and delivered here in a small combo instrumental mode! The setting is great – as Allen’s deep tenor is balanced with the guitar of Jacob Fisher, which makes for a different presentation than a piano might have given the record – as Hans Beckenroth provides bass and Kristian Leth handles drums – all in a well-recorded ate that’s up to the standard that we’ve come to love from Venus Records. Titles include “I Will Wait For You”, “The Summer Knows”, “Chateau En Suede”, “I Wish You Love”, “My Way”, and “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life”. (more…)
