These CDs serve their purpose well offering complete movements or sections of recordings available on Pentatone. The only listing of contents is on the back jewel-box cover; the booklet(s) are actually catalogs of what is available in the format. Each CD is given a full page in the booklet with complete track listings and performer informtion. I’m surprised each of the CD booklets doesn’t list all of the multi-channel recordings (both new and RQR) on the label. One features excerpts from new multi-channel recordings; the most impressive sonically are those by the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, New Dutch Academy, Russian National Orchestra and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra Dvorak/Tchaikovsky coupling. All of these are 5 channel recordings (left/right, front and rear, and center front).

It’s a compilation of various Bali tribal songs. The instruments are a mixture of brass pots, drums, bells and chanting. Most of it is very rapid and stacatta in nature. If you’re into “world music” or want something that’s quite a departure from the garbage you hear on the radio, get this impossible to find CD. It’s simply amazing.

The subtitle of this SACD is “The Ultimate Audio Experience”. But open the notes, and you discover that all the tracks save one are from 44, 48, and 96KHz PCM sample original sources. There are some great performances here –- forever trapped in mid-definition resolution. They date from 1993 to 2003, a surprising number of them being recorded in 2001-2003, after DSD recording was available. In listening to this SACD, I was beginning to have doubts about the SACD format until I noticed the sources in the liner notes.
The one DSD recording here is the Dvorak Slavonic Dance op. 71 #1 with Ivan Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra Dvorák: The Slavonic Dances [SACD]. My reference is Reiner’s performance Dvorak: Slavonic Dances & Brahms: Hungarian Dances / Fritz Reiner Conducting The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and I would have to say that I prefer Fischer’s performance, which has tremendous nuance and exuberance.

Without a doubt, this is the quisessential SACD for all music lovers. The sound on this disc is mindblowing and the warmth and clarity of the recording is flawless in all aspects. The discrete 5.1 surround mixing is done very tastefully and it’s almost like being right there in the recording studio with all the instruments/vocals surrounding you in sheer bliss. All tracks on this SACD are brilliant and I think Ken did a great job in picking these selections from the magnificient Telarc/Heads Up SACD range. What’s more, Ken gives you detailed info on the surround recording of each track telling you which instrument goes into which channel and the highlights to look out for in each track too. Check out the track from Ladysmith Black Mamboza, and also the Spyro Gyra and Yellowjackets tracks. To sum it up, this is the only SACD you’ll ever need if you want to show off your 5.1 surround SACD system. Well done sound & vision! – customer rewiew at amazon-com

VH1 Divas Live brings VH1’s original 1998 gathering of superstar songbirds to SACD. Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, and Shania Twain perform some of their biggest hits, including Carey’s “My All,” Twain’s “You’re Still the One,” Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” and Estefan’s “Turn the Beat Around.” All five divas share the spotlight — to the extent that a diva can share the spotlight — on the set’s finale, “Natural Woman” and “Testimony.” A worthwhile set for those who want to see as well as hear their VH1 Divas Live album, the disc offers little in the way of additional features but remains a faithful translation of the special TV concert.

After attending an annual boogie-woogie concert organized by Mark Braun (Mr. B.), Monty Alexander headed a recording project that paid tribute to both boogie-woogie and spirituals. Five pianists participated, performing two numbers apiece, with four of the players (all but Alexander) playing a pair of duets. Alexander, Eric Reed, and Johnny O’Neal are better known nationally than Bob Seeley and Mark Braun, but all five pianists fare well, stretching beyond boogie-woogie and spirituals to include a few swing standards and even a bluish duet on Benny Golson’s “Whisper Not.” Recommended to boogie-woogie fans and the curious.
