By the mid-seventeenth century, musical composition had reached a point where invention had converged with technical mastery. Composers embraced a bass line lively with linearity, often entering into dialogue with the upper voices. Exploratory harmonic schemes were encompassed within larger unified tonalities. Through rhetorical structures, such as motive, imitation and sequence, composers instilled logic into their musical arguments. These characteristics, though rooted in vocal practice, were being cultivated for the first time in musical history for instrumentalists. In other words, the Baroque was born.
The featured composers showcase sublime examples of the early Italian Baroque. Some composers dominate the repertory; others have left behind only a handful of works. Here, they come together to convey the diverse musical landscape at such an excitingly rich and creative era.

My Blueberry Nights is notable not only as the first English-language film by director Wong Kar Wai but also for the acting debut of Norah Jones. It’s surprising, then, that the soundtrack only includes one song from Jones, “The Story,” the only new song on the set and one that Jones has stated reflects her doubts about becoming an actress. It’s not appreciably different than anything else Jones has recorded to this point, a slow, jazzy ballad featuring her moody vocals and piano in a trio setting. As for the rest, it’s an appealing mix of R&B (Mavis Staples, Ruth Brown, Otis Redding), jazz (Cassandra Wilson), a couple of Cat Power tunes, and the ubiquitous Ry Cooder, who always makes any soundtrack worth a listen.

“One of the rockingest movies ever…the music here is dark, dirty and seedy.”
The controversial 1980 film “Cruising” has become an underground cult classic. One of the best parts of the film is the amazingly gritty soundtrack. The music was scored and compiled by Academy Award winner Jack Nitzsche also known as the “Wall of Sound” arranger on Phil Spector’s hits.
Most of the songs on the Cruising soundtrack are a mix of rock, glam and disco music and full of an anxious energy. They complement the movie action and the S&M bar setting extremely well and offer a glimpse of an un-idealized 70’s gay scene. The tracks are performed by various punk, P.Funk, rock, pop and soul artists including Willy DeVille, John Hiatt, Rough Trade, The Cripples and several raw and dirty cuts by proto punks The Germs.
