The American record label Motown, which helped to bring black and white communities together and imposed its musical genre at the time, is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2019.

Christmas is a time for being together with family or friends. It’s a time for reaching out to those in need and it can be a time to remember those who are no longer with us. At the heart of those moments, music is there to help us make sense of it all.

Gareth Malone embarks on a journey around the UK, bringing together musicians from local communities for his new album ‘A Great British Christmas’, which will be released on Decca on 2nd December. This is Gareth’s first Christmas album, and aims to unite the country through music.

The nation’s favourite choirmaster conducts recording sessions with a variety of musicians in different locations – from Perranarworthal Handbell Ringers in Cornwall, to the Hornsey Girls School Steel Pans Band in London, and the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band in West Yorkshire.

The album features contributions from stars including Ricky Wilson on the track ‘Paradise Street’, Fyfe Dangerfield on ‘Silent Night’ and Welsh harpist Catrin Finch on ‘Walking in the Air’. Gareth does what he does best – working with a host of singers, including the London Youth Choir, Belfast Community Gospel Choir, Birmingham Gospel Choir, plus the Invictus Choir in a rendition of the Dire Straits classic ‘Brothers in Arms’. His own choir, Voices, can be heard singing on every track? apart from one – ‘Only You’ – which features Gareth’s own voice, stacked up to form a choir!

The album includes a mixture of winter favourites, including the music to Frozen, plus traditional Christmas songs in new arrangements, and even a performance of Gareth’s own carol ‘A Child is Born’ – the first piece he ever wrote. It was composed by a young Gareth while he was still at school and his old music teacher shares the writing credit.

You will know many of the songs but they have been reimagined for my choir ‘Voices’ and this extraordinary line-up of British musicians both professional and amateur. From Glasgow to Cornwall, Cardiff to Belfast I found a tapestry of musical delights with bell ringers, brass bands, community choirs, children’s voices and some of my musical friends as soloists. I wish you a very happy Christmas and all the joy that music can bring.” (Gareth Malone)

The nineteenth-century poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow has rather fallen out of fashion these days, deemed inferior to his fellow American writers, Hawthorne, Whitman, Emerson and Melville. And yet, Longfellow is a memorable narrative poet, capable of creating persuasive characters and situations. Any parent will recognise the ‘patter of little feet’ that the protagonist of Longfellow’s 1860 poem, ‘The Children’s Hour’, hears one evening as he works, heralding, ‘The sound of a door that is opened,/ And voices soft and sweet.’ The poet-speaker seems happy to be interrupted by the ‘blue-eyed banditti’, vowing ‘I have you fast in my fortress,/ And will not let you depart’.

The ‘children’s hour’ is so cherished precisely because it is ephemeral, fragile, something that Longfellow, whose life was touched by family loss, had been forced by personal experience to understand and accept.

The Norwegian drummer Gard Nilssen is best known for his work with the three-piece bands Puma and Bushman’s Revenge, which put a gnarly twist on jazz-rock, driven by distorted electric guitars. “Firehouse” (Clean Feed), his sanguine debut as a leader, features a trio pointedly named Acoustic Unity, with the saxophonist André Roligheten and the bassist Petter Eldh, two more busy players on the European circuit. (Mr. Roligheten, from Norway, is a member of the improvising duo Albatrosh; Mr. Eldh, from Sweden, works in a trio led by the British pianist Django Bates.) Mr. Nilssen and his partners make a respectable free-bop ruckus, earthy and often swinging. Though it’s a drummer’s band, Mr. Roligheten grabs the ear as a soloist, especially on tenor saxophone, which he plays with a gusty fluency. The tunes are sturdy constructions, and the band muscles through them with a clear grasp of precedent, evoking some Sonny Rollins here, some Peter Brötzmann there — and on the closing track, “Life, Somewhere Before the Exit Sign,” the late-1960s Keith Jarrett Trio.

20th Anniversary remastered reissue of Garbage’s acclaimed second album.

Three years after the electronic-tinged rock of their 1995 self-titled debut made them a worldwide name, Garbage returned with its highly anticipated follow-up. If its title suggested Version 2.0 was more of the same, it was actually a starker, darker record than its predecessor. Frontwoman Shirley Manson exuded a similarly sensual eroticism with her vocal delivery, but, on the whole, the music was more irascible and confrontational—even the plaintive, slow melody of “Medication” sounds like it was deliberately defiled to be less accessible.

Digitally remastered 20th Anniversary edition. Version 2.0 is the second studio album by alternative rock band Garbage, originally released in 1998. The album was recorded primarily at Smart Studios from March 1997 to February 1998. Despite a slow start, Version 2.0 went on to equal it’s predecessor, earning platinum certifications in many territories. With the album, Garbage aimed to improve and expand on the style of their 1995 self-titled debut rather than reinvent their sound. In 1999, Version 2.0 was nominated for Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. The album’s third single “Special” was further nominated the following year for Best Rock Song and for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.

Garbage made their comeback in 2012, returning to action after a seven-year hiatus with Not Your Kind of People. Strange Little Birds arrived four years later — a gap that’s just over half the length of their hiatus — and it plays as a continuation of its predecessor, a record that draws a conscious bridge to the band’s ’90s heyday. If Garbage are no longer opting in with new trends, they’re also not grasping at elusive straws from the past: Strange Little Birds is a comfortable record, an album from a band that embraces its signatures and limitations. As they’re a group of studio musicians, Garbage still thrill with the possibilities of recording, loading each track with all manner of trickery — showiness that envelops, not alienates. Part of the pleasure of listening to Garbage is how their form is their substance: it’s about lush, dark waves of sounds as much as it is pop hooks. Shirley Manson may tackle risky sociological or personal issues in her lyrics, but how she sings is paramount, how her voice alternately soars above and is subsumed by the washes of treated guitars. Strange Little Birds showcases this narcotic pull so well because it doesn’t push at the edges of the band’s sound: it embraces this ebb and flow. Such modesty doesn’t mean Garbage settle for the expected — they can achieve a sultry slow burn on “If I Lost You” — but the impressive thing about Strange Little Birds is how it feels simultaneously familiar and fresh, a record that echoes the past without being trapped by it.

Although they might not be the first ’90s band to come to mind, it’s hard to overstate Garbage’s long-lasting influence on “pop” music—you can hear the industrial yet accessible dance-floor rhythms in the songs of Lady Gaga, while Billie Eilish’s darker twists and turns echo those of singer Shirley Manson. For the band’s seventh album, released a quarter-century after they broke through, Garbage’s formula isn’t so different, but they’ve revitalized it with lyrics that fit a shaken-up world that feels like it’s rapidly changing and also not fast enough. “It was our way of trying to make sense of how fucking nuts the world is and the astounding chaos we find ourselves in,” Manson has said—noting that the lyrics are critiques of racism, sexism, misogyny and capitalism. She comes out guns blazing on the industrial ass-shaker of an opener, “The Men Who Rule the World”: “The men who rule the world/ Have made a fucking mess/ The history of power/ The worship of success.” Her past experience of being rejected as a solo artist by her record label—for being too noir—drives the high-speed chase sounds of “The Creeps” (“They were selling me cheap out there on the street … they got a gun against my head”). “Waiting for God,” inspired by the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements,” is haunting and almost dirge-like as Manson explores the futility of hopes and prayers to deal with man’s evil. Elsewhere, the ballad “Uncomfortably Me” snakes like ’80s goth pop, “Anonymous XXX” slinks with a Latinx flair of driving drums and drunken horns sounds, and Manson’s heaving whisper (“If I had a dick would you blow it?”) prowls around a Depeche Mode-like dance-floor groove. But it’s not all doom and gloom. “Flipping the Bird,” as you would expect, is a lyrical kiss-off to people who pigeonhole, but it is as poppy-sounding as old hits like “Only Happy When It Rains.” “This City Will Kill You” (a warning to not be lulled into danger by glamour) indulges in a Roxy Music lushness. And the title track isn’t just upbeat—it’s hopeful. It was inspired by a trip she took to Santiago, Chile, witnessing protests against corruption and inequality. As she sings: “Be kind, beware/ Be good, don’t be scared/ Nothing lasts and no one stays/ The same forever so accept the change.” – Shelly Ridenour

Garbage is the debut studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on August 15, 1995, by Almo Sounds. The album was met with critical acclaim upon its release, being viewed by some as an innovative recording for its time. It reached number 20 on the US Billboard 200 and number six on the UK Albums Chart, while charting inside the top 20 and receiving multi-platinum certifications in several territories. The album’s success was helped by the band promoting it on a year-long tour, including playing on the European festival circuit and supporting the Smashing Pumpkins throughout 1996, as well as by a run of increasingly successful singles culminating with “Stupid Girl”, which received Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1997.
