Prolific Vancouver-based singer/composer Ian William Craig returns with a gorgeous new LP of material comissioned to soundtrack the computer game Magnesium 173. Whilst functioning as a score, ‘Music for Magnesium_173’ is far from being a set of short cues cues or lesser material. Released on double vinyl and digital formats, the record comprises a set of twelve bold and immersive pieces – the majority clocking in between 5-10 minutes in length and totalling 80 minutes of new music. These are anything but passive or reserved background sound-beds though; possessing a genuine weight and power, ‘Music for Magnesium_173’ offers another tour de force display of Craig’s peerless power as an improvising composer able to summon and shape the sublime via an arsenal of modified tape machinery, electronics and his own gorgeous voice, with the results forging a unique kind of choral-based, heavily-abrasive take on ambient composition.

Although Moritz Moszkowski (1854–1925) wrote a considerable quantity of piano music, only a single piece, ‘Étincelles’, made it into the repertoire, not least because Horowitz enjoyed playing it. The early works on this second instalment in Ian Hobson’s survey of Moszkowski’s complete music for solo piano reveal a debt to Mendelssohn and Schumann, but the effortless craftsmanship heard here already justifies a later remark of Paderewski’s: ‘After Chopin, Moszkowski best understands how to write for the piano, and his writing embraces the whole gamut of piano technique’. Most of the pieces in Opp. 15 and 18 are attractive salon miniatures, but the Three Piano Pieces in Dance Form, Op. 17, are extended Lisztian essays that showcase Moszkowski’s mastery of the keyboard and his command of form.

‘Mysterious Shapes and Remembered Rhythms’ is a short series of sketches I dedicated to a mono reel-to-reel recorder sourced from guitar and tongue drum.
‘Rave 83’ was a loop I’d labelled and loved for years but never felt I could develop in a suitable way until sharing it with my friend Stijn who collaborated with me on the track for which I am very thankful.
After listening to the pieces I realised that they sat rather nicely together in their own little unit, but decided that I’d ask another friend to see if they could add their own slant to the recordings. Alex (aka Fields We Found) created a wonderful track from each piece to bring the E.P. to its conclusion in the perfect way.

Tenor Ian Bostridge completes his Pentatone trilogy of Schubert song cycles with a rendition of Schwanengesang, performed with renowned pianist Lars Vogt. Schwanengesang was compiled and published after Schubert’s death, and the pieces literally belong to his swan songs. From the romantic “Ständchen” to the somber “Der Doppelgänger,” these songs are imbued with a deep melancholy and longing. Like Winterreise, they are best suited to mature performers, both vocally and in terms of life experience, and this recording captures Bostridge’s mature interpretation, enhanced by Vogt’s masterful playing. Swan Song is coupled with the extensive song Loneliness, which adds to the album’s bleak but ultimately comforting character.

For the American composer Caroline Shaw, writing music is like ‘cooking someone you love a meal’, she told BBC Music Magazine. The youngest-ever winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Shaw has premiered works at Carnegie Hall and the BBC Proms. She has even toured the US with Kanye West and appeared in the hit HBO series Mozart in the Jungle… Good food and music ‘should be nourishing and complex; they should be something that you can taste easily in the beginning before you find there’s much more underneath’. As the journalist Kate Wakeling points out: ‘This sounds much like Shaw’s own music. Her work combines immediate, sensuous appeal with taut structural rigour.’ This album is the outcome of a meeting between the composer and David Violi, Pauline Buet and their partners from I Giardini. It presents a monograph of chamber music, including a world premiere recording, The Wheel , a dialogue between the voice of the cello and the piano.

I Draw Slow is one of the most unique bands on the Americana scene. Fronted by brother/sister songwriting team Dave Holden (guitar/vocals) and Louise Holden (vocals), this Dublin, Ireland-based group sits squarely at the crossroads of Irish and Appalachian music and has received critical praise for an original sound that bridges the gap between traditional Irish and American roots music. Joining Dave and Louise for this journey are bandmates Konrad Liddy (upright bass), Colin Derham (banjo), and Adrian Hart (fiddle). The band’s new eponymously titled project ‘I Draw Slow’ starts with the arresting opener “Bring out Your Dead”, a track that would not be out of place on Fleetwood Mac’s album ‘Tusk’ (if the Mac played trad Irish music), with vocal echos of The Mamas & The Papas thrown in for good measure. They channel New Orleans trad jazz on the track “Trouble”, replete with rudimental snare and mournful brass. And on the duet “Queen of the Wasteland”, adorned by clawhammer banjo, fiddle and acoustic guitar lines, they draw upon Ireland’s long folk song and storytelling tradition to create a neo-folk classic that is both timely and timeless.
