The opera based on the libretto by Frederick the Great will be staged as a co–production of the Rheinsberg Castle Easter Festival and the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik in Innsbruck in 2022 and in Rheinsberg the following year – for the first time in almost 240 years.

Next year, Carl-Heinrich Graun’s opera “Silla” will be performed on an opera stage for the first time since 1783:

About 240 years after its last performance, the opera, whose libretto was written by Friedrich the Great, will have its premiere in Innsbruck in August 2022 as a co-production of the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik and Musikkultur Rheinsberg.

In 2023 it will be shown at the Rheinsberg Castle Easter Festival – the place where Friedrich the Great developed his artistic visions with Carl Heinrich Graun and other members of his court orchestra.

The work, which premiered at the Royal Court Opera in Berlin in 1753 and whose libretto was written entirely by Frederick the Great, is about the Roman dictator Sulla, who achieved literary fame through the bloody suppression of the Roman Civil War, but above all through his subsequent voluntary renunciation of power, which surprised all party members. In his libretto, as well as in the other two opera books from his hand (“Coriolano” and “Montezuma”), Friedrich addresses the role of the ruler and his duties, which he has already dealt with as crown prince during his time in Rheinsberg and in his polemic “Antimacchiavell”.

The musically rich and demanding score represents a special challenge for today’s theater, as the cast list alone shows four major castrato parts. The Innsbrucker Festwochen and the Osterfestspiele Rheinsberg are happy to have won four first-class male soloists for these tasks: Bejun Mehta will take over the title role, Valer Sabadus, Samuel Mariño and Hagen Matzeit are his opponents Metello, Postumio and Lentulo, the tenor Merti Süngü will play the scheming released Crisogono, Eleonora Bellocci and Roberta Invernizzi will take over the two female roles. The musical direction is in the hands of Alessandro De Marchi, the staging is by Georg Quander, stage and costumes are designed by Julia Dietrich.
