For over 20 years, Echoes of Swing have been an essential go-to band for lovers of classic jazz. They show quite how many sides there are to it, and do so in a way that is always consummately fresh. The quartet of Bernd Lhotzky (piano), Colin T. Dawson (trumpet), Chris Hopkins (alto saxophone) and Oliver Mewes (drums) breathe new life into the canon of the Jazz Age with their skill as players, their fine arrangements – and with a lot of humour. The band play their own compositions too. And each of their albums is built around a theme: after “Blue Pepper”, “Dancing”, “Travelin'” and the “Tribute to Bix Beiderbecke”, their new album “Winter Days at Schloss Elmau” is a winter walk, but with a swing to it. The new album continues in the line of superb recordings that ACT has made in the large concert hall at Schloss Elmau. Indeed, where would one find more inspiration for a winter album than in this unique location with its breathtaking views of the Bavarian Alps?

Most jazz musicians are also travellers. Their places of work are the clubs and festivals of the world, so they are always on the go. Echoes of Swing, however, has another dimension: This quartet is also on a journey through time, going back to classic jazz from the 20’s to the 50’s, bringing it into the present day and shaping it for the future. This “tour de force” has been going on for 20 years. A reason then to celebrate, which is perhaps best done by re-tracing the journey, reviving memories of things experienced, and looking at all that travelling involves.

Early Jazz was first and foremost Dance music, a fact which is all too easily forgotten these days. As each new Dance craze arrived on the scene, from Charleston and Ragtime, through Foxtrot and Lindy Hop, and then on to Jive, the development of Jazz music moved along with it, and it was only later that Jazz was established in the concert hall. The quartet Echoes Of Swing have put a clear marker down with their latest album ‘Dancing’.

On Blue Pepper, modern swing band Echoes Of Swing open a new chapter, a quantum leap forward from their last award winning release, with even more impressive arrangements and some outstanding original pieces. A concept album of sorts, all the tracks have the word “blue” in their titles or concern themselves with the colour. The legacy of the swing era is safe in the hands of these fine musicians.

Our perceptions of major figures in music from previous epochs tend to change over the course of time. There may indeed be something of a paradox here, because the innovators of the past are often only truly recognized and appreciated by later generations. The more energetically and decisively a pioneer has broken with the past, the more he (or she) will have been mistrusted and cast aside in their life-times, and the more is required from the rear-view mirror of posterity before they can start to be treated with respect, let alone with honour.

In the early summer of 1630, Venice was struck by the plague in a devastating way: it raged for 18 months and killed almost 50,000 people, more than a third of the population at the time! Doge Nicol`o Cantarini vowed to build a large church for the deliverance from the plague, and even though he was unable to experience it himself, this vow was carried out. With the Santa Maria della Salute, one of the most magnificent churches in the city was built.

STARDUST/STAR DUST ” WE ACCUMULATE ON OUR ROOF”
The first album by Ebren trio consisting of Volkan Incüvez (ney), Özgür Gürbüz (kanun) and Fırat Doğan (ud) was released under KALAN/Z Music label.
The trio’s friendships that began during their school years and their experience performing together over time formed the nature of Ebren Trio music. They used traditional Maqam music in free forms and thus evolved a whole new harmony through familiar timbres. This evolution also revealed the name of the group: in ancient Turkish mythology, it was thought that dragons, the God of time, turned the world. For this reason, the words “universe” or “ebren”, which means “spinning, turning, eviren”, were used for Dragons. According to this legend, all that exists and is imagined is Ebren, a dragon. Like the universe, Ebren evolves and transforms. The trio’s music is transforming and also inspired by this transformation. The music of flying dragons drawing an infinity sign in the middle of existence and absence feeds the spirit of the Ebren trio’s debut album…

Ebony Quartet – Unheard (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Ebony Quartet – Unheard (2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 01:08:38 minutes | 636 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Channel Classics Records

This CD is unheard, for, as far as we know, none of this music has ever been issued before on a CD or gramophone recording. But this recording is also unheard-of, since every piece conveys the force of artistic necessity, of an uncompromising, selfless idealism, on which the Nazis laid a curse, but which went to make the music of the Interwar period so rich and engrossing. In short, the present CD provides a supplement to the incomplete history of the music of this period, and brings unjustly forgotten composers to life once again.

The Ebony Quartet consists of musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. For many years they have formed the string nucleus of the Ebony Band, while also performing regularly as a quartet. Besides the specific Ebony Band repertoire of the Interwar years the quartet also plays music of earlier periods. Together with the Ebony Band the quartet was awarded an Edison Klassiek in 1994 for the recording of Erwin Schulhoff’s Concerto for string quartet and winds.

The Ebony Band was founded in 1990 by Werner Herbers, former principal oboist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The ensemble has devoted itself to the rediscovery and rehabilitation of music from the Interwar period that was unknown, forgotten or considered lost. For many years a busy concert schedule took the Ebony Band as far as the USA, but its present mission is to document repertoire and issue hitherto unpublished works and CDs.

Eblana String Trio – The King’s Alchemist: British String Trios (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 50:23 minutes | 1,94 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Willowhayne Records

Featuring world premiere recordings of trios by Sally Beamish and Hugh Wood bookended by seldom heard works by Moeran and Finzi, showcases the sheer wealth of string trio repertoire by British composers. Although diverse in style and substance, the four works are bound together by the common strands of vivid storytelling and a shared musical language. Finzi’s Prelude and Fugue – the composers only piece of chamber music for strings alone – was composed in 1938 and conceived as a tribute to the renowned teacher R.O. Morris, with whom Finzi studied 16th century counterpoint. It is recorded here by the Eblana String Trio for only the second time, following its premiere LP recording in 1983. Ithaka by Hugh Wood is described by the composer himself as ‘a sort of mini-symphonic poem’. This one-movement work takes its inspiration from Cavafy’s meditation on Ulysses’ homeward voyage, and vibrantly depicts the adventures, discoveries, and dangers encountered along the way. Sally Beamish’s The King’s Alchemist is similarly programmatic music, reflecting aspects of the extraordinary story of John Damian, a European alchemist who resided at the court of King James IV in the early 16th century. The CD concludes with Moeran’s String Trio, written in 1931 and deservedly counted amongst his finest works.
