In a world increasingly saturated with the ephemeral joys of simulated companionship, Her’s are an authentic Merseyside bromance between partners in crime Audun Laading and Stephen Fitzpatrick. Blossoming from a chance encounter in a university canteen, and from as far afield as Norway and Barrow, the duo found a natural chemistry through their encyclopaedic love of off-kilter humour and art.Following on from last year’s 9 track compilation ‘Songs Of Her’s’, the Liverpool duo’s upcoming debut LP ‘Invitation to Her’s’ released August 24th on Heist or Hit will be their most significant step yet. All things considered, ‘Invitation To Her’s’ is already proving to be one of the most free and inspired indie rock debuts this island has seen for a while.

Hermann Scherchen (German: Hermann Scherchen, June 21, 1891, Berlin – June 12, 1966, Florence) was a German conductor and music teacher, violist.

I learned to play the viola myself. In 1907-1910 he played in the Berlin Blütner Orchestra, then in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1911 he met Schoenberg, participated in the premiere of his “Moon Pierrot”. In 1914-1916 he conducted in Riga. He spent 1916-1918 in a Russian prison camp. In 1918 he returned to Berlin, founded a New Musical Society, and in 1919 created the magazine “Melos” dedicated to contemporary music. Among his students are Pierre Boulez, Karl Amadeus Hartmann (Scherchen is one of the authors of the libretto of his opera Simplicissimus, based on the novel by Grimmelshausen).

In 1933 he left Germany, led orchestras in Brussels, Vienna, etc. In 1958 he toured in Russia (the recording of Bach’s “Matthew Passion” from the BZK of the Moscow Conservatory has not been published).

Channeling a continuum of influences spanning from Neil Young to Sonic Youth to Pavement, French anti-folk band Herman Düne earned an international cult following that included the influential BBC radio personality John Peel. Featuring sibling singers/guitarists André and David-Ivar Herman Düne and drummer Omé, the group issued a series of self-released cassettes and CD-Rs and toured the U.S. and Europe before releasing its first “official” LP, Turn Off the Light, on the Prohibited label in mid-2000. That September, Peel extended an invitation to cut a BBC radio session, and was so impressed that he summoned the trio to his home for a live Christmas broadcast. Upon relocating to Paris, Herman Düne recorded 2001’s They Go to the Woods for the noted Amerindie label Shrimper. Omé exited the lineup soon after, and with new drummer Néman Herman Dune, they resurfaced later that year with a second full-length, Switzerland Heritage. After a 2002 split release with U.S. emo outfit Cerberus Shoal, The Whys and the Hows of Herman Düne & Cerberus Shoal, the trio backed Canadian singer/songwriter Julie Doiron on a French tour. Two new LPs, the Track & Field release Mas Cambios and the Shrimper release Mash Concrete Metal Mushrooms, followed in 2003. After a series of self-released solo efforts, André and David-Ivar reconvened Herman Düne for 2005’s Not on Top, which featured Doiron on bass and vocals. Their Source Etc. label debut, Giant, hit stores in 2006; late that year, André Herman Dune departed the band and pursued a solo career as Stanley Brinks. Now a duo, Herman Dune removed the umlaut from its name for the 2008 album Next Year in Zion. After taking a break and starting their own record label, Herman Dune returned in 2011 with an album named after their label, Strange Moosic. The label also released the band’s music for the film Mariage á Mendoza in 2013. Around this time, David-Ivar began working on his solo project, Black Yaya. ~ Jason Ankeny

Quarantined in the sleepy San Pedro neighborhood of Vinegar Hill, on the same harbour-adjacent street where Charles Bukowski lived out his final years, David-Ivar Herman Dune, visual artist and founding anchor of French antifolk stalwarts Herman Dune, turned those Covid-induced anxieties inward and emerged from his home studio with the new full-length LP Notes From Vinegar Hill. There’s something for everyone on this record – folksy rockers, Bakersfield twang, Big Pink-style Americana, 70s AM Gold, and rough-hewn Cold Turkey guitar stomps. The songs speak of the suffocating claustrophobia of isolation and fear, the anguish of being an immigrant in a country where policies harden by the moment, but also of the beauty of California, the ocean, and a quiet life with three black cats that turned the heart of a Scorpio toward felines. This album is dedicated to David Berman. Personnel: David Ivar: Voice, Piano, Guitars, Upright Bass, Drums, Percussions, Whistles and Harmonica Caitlin Rose: Vocals and Duet on Vinegar Hill Mayon: Vocals Spencer Cullum III: Pedal Steel Jon Natchez: Horns on Say You Love Me Too

Herbie Nichols occupies a special place on the podium of unfairly forgotten heroes in the history of jazz. This virtuoso, who died of leukaemia at the age of 44, was an innovative pianist with lyrical and rhythmic melodies that were very original for their time. Fascinated by Thelonious Monk, he found his own sound by mixing influences as disparate as Dixieland, Caribbean and classical music by the likes of Bartók or Satie. His transition to Blue Note led to three trio albums: The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (recorded in May 1955 with Al McKibbon on double bass and Art Blakey on drums) and this one, Herbie Nichols Trio (recorded in August 1955 and April 1956 with Teddy Kotick and Al McKibbon on double bass and Max Roach on drums). In 1957, Herbie Nichols recorded his last record for Bethlehem Records – Love, Gloom, Cash, Love  – before falling into oblivion and being eaten away by the illness that took over his life in April 1963… Years later, avant-garde musicians like Misha Mengelberg, Roswell Rudd and Steve Lacy helped bring his music back into the public eye.  – Marc Zisman

Herbie Mann was still primarily known as a bop or swing flutist on Love and the Weather. The material here is a good example of Mann’s early style, recorded shortly before he became fascinated with world music, Afro-Cuban and Latin sounds. At the time this album was released in 1956, the flute wasn’t quite embraced as a jazz instrument but Mann helped change that with a sound of his own.

An inventive album from an inventive musician, West Coast trombonist Herbie Harper recorded this self-titled release in Los Angeles in 1955 with a septet that included both a tuba and a harp. Those two unusual instruments give the ensemble an added dimension that may have been startling to jazz fans at first, but work well with the choice of material on this album.
