URO performs electro acoustic music. Everything is 100% improvised and they don’t make compositions, as you’d normally expect from a band. Some sounds and melodies are played on acoustic instruments. Others are generated by combining separate specialized modules in a modular synth or by sampling themselves.

Caine: “The work consists of small chapters with different themes that express feelings like anger, frustration, but also peace. The work contains allusions to American music history. I take up the question of what holds the United States together. Someone living in NYC has a different background than someone from Oklahoma or Texas. We look at and judge each other in completely different ways. For me, the music is the only connecting element. I’m convinced of that, both as a musician and as a person.” The Brussels Philharmonic commissions a work from the American musician Uri Caine. Caine receives a “carte blanche”. The result is the composition Agent Orange for orchestra and the improvisation artists Dave Liebman on saxophone, John Hébert on double bass, DJ Olive on turntables and Uri Caine on piano: jazz meets symphonic

Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony is one of conductor Dmitry Liss’ favourite works. It is close to his heart because it encapsulates an ethical standard. Orchestras from countries that have experienced dictature and repression have a special relation to this work. The performers immediately understand what is behind the notation; the mysteries, the magic of ambiguities, the playing with fire. To express oneself so personally is extremely hazardous and Shostakovich does it with sublime skill. Dmitry Liss says he comes closer to the music and admires it more and more each time he conducts it. The Ural Philharmonic Orchestra has performed the work in major venues all over Europe.

For Brahms, folk songs were sources of musical inspiration, not subjects for academic study. The songs from Books 6 and 7 of the Deutsche Volkslieder exemplify how Brahms’ distinctive and expressive accompaniments brought unique qualities to these songs, how he intensified certain verses to draw out their power, or allowed the piano its own revealing melodic phrases. In Book 7 the songs are divided between a lead singer and a chorus, adding fresh musical possibilities. In the Volkskinderlieder (‘Children’s Folk Songs’) Brahms’ economy and deftness turn lullabies into works of art.

A dynamic suite of dexterous melodies and a nuanced artistic response to the complexities of motherhood, Bless This Mess was crafted in tandem with the conception and birth of Remy’s twin boys. It expands the sonic and thematic palette of U.S. Girls, fusing the muses of funk, mythology, and the radical disorientation of joy into an electric tapestry of anthems, aches, and awakenings.

Bells In Toyland is a 1967 Jazz Album by John Klein released RCA Victor Records. I think there’s more Christmas joy on here than you’ll find on a lot of full-fledged Christmas albums. Anyhow, this one isn’t even a Christmas album, but it’s by an artist who made some great Christmas music. On his second solo effort, Winnipeg native John K. Samson builds on his long-tenured role as poet laureate of contemporary prairie culture. Former frontman of beloved Canadian indie rockers the Weakerthans, Samson’s trademark tales of blue-collar Canadians and downtrodden, internet-age academics continue to collide on Winter Wheat, an appropriately titled collection of maudlin folk-rock tunes where hope is hibernating just below the soil. Recorded during a Winnipeg winter alongside wife and musical partner Christine Fellows, Samson’s gently picked guitar is supported by former Weakerthans rhythm section Jason Tait (drums) and Greg Smith (bass), whose easy camaraderie is felt in the wide open, nuanced arrangements. Like much of his previous work, these songs are warm, sad, and ultimately familiar, peppered with vulnerable admissions, wry observations, and occasional tech and social media jargon. Opening casually with “Bad hashtag wants me dead, but I don’t mind,” Samson imagines a world where anxieties and regrets are wiped out with a single keystroke on the downtempo “Select All Delete.” He cheerleads a disenchanted student on “Postdoc Blues,” time travels backward through his city’s history on “Oldest Oak at Brookside,” and chronicles the voyage to sobriety on “17th Street Treatment Centre.” Recurring Samson character Virtute the cat even makes an appearance on a pair of songs, bowing out on the bittersweet closer “Virtute at Rest.” Samson’s music has a comfortable, lived-in feeling and, while his songs are frequently sad, he manages to come across as more of a travel companion through life’s travails than a bearer of bad tidings. It’s his friendliness that makes his musings on the human condition work, and with Winter Wheat, he’s once again crafted another thoughtful and meaningful set.

Florence Price was one of the most versatile and accomplished american musicians of her generation whose unstoppable creativity and earliest successes were set against the backdrop of 1930s economic depression. The Third Symphony expresses aspects of Price’s cultural heritage in a symphonic framework. Avoiding direct references to existing folk songs and dances, it creates highly distinctive African spiritual moods and uses the syncopated rhythms of the Juba in its jazzy third movement. This world premiere recording of Ethiopia’s Shadow in America traces the American experience of enslaved Africans, while The Mississippi River Suite quotes several famous spirituals, capturing the struggles of Black migration across the United States.

The Eclipse Sessions, John Hiatt’s newest album, offers up his strongest set of songs in years. Long celebrated as a skilled storyteller and keen observer of life’s twists and turns, Hiatt can get at the heart of a knotty emotion or a moment in time with just a sharp, incisive lyric or witty turn of phrase. The 11 tracks presented in The Eclipse Sessions, from the breezy opener ”Cry to Me,” to the stark ”Nothing in My Heart,” the lost-love lamentation ”Aces Up Your Sleeve” to the rollicking ”Poor Imitation of God,” demonstrate that the singer-songwriter, now 66, is only getting better with age, his guitar playing more rugged and rootsy, his words wiser and more wry. Hiatt goes all in with The Eclipse Sessions. There’s a grit to these songs’ a craggy, perfectly-imperfect quality that colors every aspect of the performances, right down to Hiatt’s vocals, which are quite possibly his most raw and expressive to date. ”They ain’t pretty, that’s for sure,” he says about the creaks and cracks that punctuate his phrases in songs like ”Poor Imitation of God” and ”One Stiff Breeze.” ”But I don’t mind a bit. All the catches and the glitches and the gruffness, that sounds right to me. That sounds like who I am.” The Eclipse Sessions is the sound of an artist not only living in but also capturing the moment.

In 1970, the very young aspiring songwriter John Hiatt moved to Nashville with a dream of launching a career there. His heart must have quickened as he walked past the RCA studios building, where all the giants of country music did their recordings. Fifty years on, and Hiatt is quite at home there now. It was in Studio B, a real historical monument of American music, that he recorded Leftover Feelings, which was his 25th album, give or take. The recording sessions were relaxed affairs, just like a jam at home, with a group of Americana-minded friends, led by steel-guitar player Jerry Douglas. There were no drums: just guitars, violin and a double bass marking time. This record is fully acoustic, unlike the long black Cadillac of the opening number, which is electric (the car, that is, not the song). Long Black Electric Cadillac kicks off another journey into the world of Americana, that timeless American sound where every song is like a tree, a stone or a ray of sunlight in a Western national park. So, yes, this is just one more Americana record: but no two are ever the same, because the devil is in the detail and in the personality of the artist. Hiatt’s voice, which resembles that of a southern Dylan; his songs, which are like scrawlings on a roadmap (Mississippi Phone Booth, I’m In Ashville…); and his taste for writing characters: bundled together all proves that he richly deserves his reputation as a grand old songwriter. Two years after the release of a big retrospective box set of his recordings for New West, this latest album shows that John Hiatt isn’t ready for retirement just yet. – Stéphane Deschamps
