She was best known for her characteristic soprano voice and her political commitment against the Vietnam War and racial segregation. She has been one of the icons of the American folk movement since the 1960s; her appearance in Woodstock is as famous as her love affair with Bob Dylan. As the “voice and conscience of her generation”, the “Queen of Folk” gained influence not only in the US protest scene, but also internationally.

At Club Baby Grand is a live album by the American jazz organist Jimmy Smith, recorded at Club “Baby Grand” in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1956 and released in two volumes on the Blue Note label.
The AllMusic review by Steve Leggett states:
“It’s all Jimmy Smith in full flight, bubbling over with cascading notes and breathless detours, and if his studio work is generally more structured and considered (but only a little more so), this set shows him in what was his natural habitat, astounding an audience in a small club. Bailey keeps up with things and Schwartz gets a word in now and then, but this is Smith’s show all the way”.

Mingus, the album by Joni Mitchell from 1975 is the result of a 45-minute meeting arranged by Mingus’s wife between Mitchell, who was drifting towards a style of music jazzier than her previous output and Charles Mingus. Mingus was sadly waiting to die from motor neurons disease. Unable to play, he was bored, and his wife was keen to get him interested in something. Mingus sang the melodies into a tape recorder, chords were added by Sy Johnson, and Joni wrote the lyrics and organised the recording sessions. The band on the album were members of Weather Report. Mingus died before the project was complete. To ensure enough material was ready for the album, Joni added a song of her own, “Wolf”. The album was cooly received by admirers of both musicians. The album now has a cult status, especially among younger jazz musicians. Among them, British singer Imogen Ryall considers Mingus the foundation stone and springboard of her career. “A door opener for me” is how Imogen describes the original album. Her album is an affectionate tribute to these two great musicians whose collaboration produced an enigmatic album that challenged the critics and listeners of the day. Imogen’s album offers three views of Mingus – “Chair in the Sky” captures him at the end. Wasting away but retaining an unrepentant good humour. “God Must Be a Boogie Man” is Joni having fun with the concept. “Self Portrait in Three Colours”, originally a through composed instrumental ballad, to which Imogen adds her own thoughtful and perceptive lyrics.

In the deepest reaches of the English countryside, there is a sublime sound emanating from the landscape, and its name is Haunt The Woods. Timely and yet oddly timeless, this surprisingly youthful quartet span musical decades and worlds. Recently signed with Spinefarm, it won’t be long before you hear plenty more from these musical mavericks, and with good reason. Formed in the hinterlands between Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall, Haunt The Woods deftly interweave alt-rock, folk, prog and pop with an epic level of pomp and poetic elegance that suggests a far longer tenure than their young years suggest.
There are tips of the hat to Queen and Muse, Jeff Buckley and Radiohead, and a sprinkled-in tinge of Beatles-loving pop sensibility and Manchester Orchestra-esque poignancy: Haunt The Woods have that rare ability to conjure legacy while creating a bold sound that is newly their own.
With two warmly received EPs and a debut album, Opaque (2020), which was released in 2020, the stage has been set for their overdue introduction to the world, which began with their stunning new single, ‘Fever Dream’.
Cinematic in scope, operatic in texture, new album Ubiquity is a fitting illustration of the band’s prowess and talent.
For fans of Radiohead, Muse, Jeff Buckley, Manchester Orchestra, Fleet Foxes.

Guido Santórsola (1904–1994) began his musical studies at the age of five, taught by his father, a sculptor, trumpeter and double bassist who moved from Southern Italy to São Paulo, Brazil in 1909, with the rest of the family joining him the following year. He enrolled at the São Paulo Conservatory of Music, then travelled to Naples to hone his violin technique and later London, where he studied at the Trinity College of Music under Alfred Mistowsky. His eventual return to Brazil coincided with a visit from Pietro Mascagni. At a concert in the great composer’s honour Santórsola, accompanied at the piano by Mascagni himself, performed his own compositions for violin and piano for the first time.
Santórsola’s final compositional period began at the age of 58, in 1962. He devised a very personal 12-tone technique free from conventional rules, and not to be confused with Schoenberg’s. His language is rooted in the golden age of Florentine counterpoint through to Bach.

Beethoven’s five sonatas for cello and piano laid the foundations of twentieth-century musical thought. Under the fingers of Gary Hoffman and David Selig, these five monuments of musical history, though dating from the early nineteenth century, reveal all their premonitory dimension. For these two peerless musicians, this recording marks the culmination of an artistic partnership that began more than thirty years ago. Gary Hoffman and David Selig met in 1986 and have been programing Beethoven’s sonatas for many years. Sometimes they even play them all in a single concert. Hoffman says, “I regret that the notion of individuality is being lost today. What is wonderful is to reveal the different ‘characters’ of the score. Even in Beethoven’s quartets, there are voices that emerge from a sonic ‘fusion’.”

Frank Sinatra’s second set of torch songs recorded with Gordon Jenkins, No One Cares was nearly as good as its predecessor, Where Are You? Expanding the melancholy tone of the duo’s previous collaboration, No One Cares consists of nothing but brooding, lonely songs. Jenkins gives the songs a subtley tragic treatment, and Sinatra responds with a wrenching performance. It lacks the grandiose melancholy of Only the Lonely, nor is it as lsuh as Where Are You?, but in its slow, bluesly tempos and heartbreaking little flourishes, it is every bit moving.
